    • Taste

  2. Jamie McDubh scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Not the best Kilchoman I've tasted, but a good drop. Something different with the white wine barrels.
    • Nose
subtle smoke - light fruits - lemony
    • Taste
      sweet dryness - peat smoke
    • Finish
Medium to long - peat smoke

  3. DistiLesha scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Everything is well and beautifully put together - honey-citrus notes are balanced with fruits and woodiness.
I tasted this whisky blind and decided it was Talisker 10 or Skye.
    I didn't feel any guilt.
And I was also surprised by the phenolicity that does not correspond to Ayla. No iodine or algae, shells or creosote. Apparently, peat was used from Mainland or from some other places.

    • Nose
burnt leaves and other phenols of a well-charred barrel, mainland smoke, a little gouache, lemon peel, light fruity notes, honey, heavy density.
      Saturation: 8.5 out of 10
    • Taste
continuation of the nose, a lot of fruity garden sweetness, citric acidity and fruity acidity, lemon peel, ginger burning, light peppery notes
      Sweetness: 8 out of 10
      Saturation: 10 out of 10
    • Finish
phenolic-sour, clean, with a confident woodiness

Like many other bottlers, Anthony Wills uses French sweet wine casks to finish the Kilchoman. At least the work here is transparent. On the box you will find the information that thirty bourbon barrels filled in 2012 were married for five months in Sauternes casks. So it's a young whisky.

    • Nose
In the aroma, the smoke is not that strong at first, but there are also grassy notes, some vanilla and the sweet and sour aspects of light, partly unripe grapes, which I often have with Sauternes Finishings.
    • Taste
The smoke is of course stronger in taste and the alcohol is 50% vol. properly, which is also due to the young age. The whisky is fairly straight forward, the finish has added sweetness but there is also a slightly tart oak aspect countering the sweetness which does the whisky good. Then there is also a sour grape note.
    • Finish
Smoke, some wood and some fermented grapes. Doesn't sound like much - but for five years it's not bad at all and underlines the straightforward Islay character.

Sauternes isn't necessarily my favorite finish, I'm often bothered by the tart flavors and the sugary sweetness at the same time. Here these notes are tamed by the smoke and the wood, it's a delicious whisky despite its young age.

    12/27/2021:
Uncompromising whisky, powerful, brutal, loud (with a minimum of ingredients). You won't taste much like that. It is difficult to say that a barrel from under the stern was added here. Maybe peaches? ...
    • Nose
Smoked, malted, ash, ice cream, farm, pectusin, skirda priloy straw, canned peaches.
    • Taste
Fruit ash, smoked, ice cream, vanilla, farm.
    • Finish
Continues the taste, although it loses power, softer, farm, smoked sweet ash, long, knits.

Definitely a delicious, peaty, sweet and fruity Kilchoman. But it is a vatting of which 10000 bottles have been released, not a single cask!
Do prices have to go up like this over the years?

  12. thebonewolf scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

This is quite nice. I’m surprised it was 50% as the nose is burnier than I’d expect for that at first, but that tones down shortly. I’d say this would lose a point if that persisted, or gain a point if it was never a part of it. The taste offers the least. It’s not bad, but is the weakest part. The finish is the strongest. I really like the earthy/dirty feel of it paired with the smoke.
    • Nose
      88 88
      Fruity, peaty smoke.
    • Taste
      84 84
Fruity smoke, bit salty, pepper, somewhat dry.
    • Finish

Big smoke, earthy. Long. Real nice.

Sweet and vanilla nose, wet wood, iodine, almond and a note of plum. After dilution of the peach appears.
Lively attack, fairly thick texture and very pleasant but who does not like swimming. The whole is dominated by peat, however we can feel hints of tangy fruit piercing the smoke.
Long peaty finish, liquorice, reminiscent of wood fire.
    Very greedy dram.

If it doesn't get to its predecessor, it is probably also because this one is not 100% matured, but "only" finished.

Kilchoman was a distillery that for me personally was always somewhat overshadowed by the established Islay distilleries, and wrongly so. What they create at a young age is really amazing. You are looking forward to the future!

All in all, a beautiful straight whisky that is not difficult to lay on the chest with complexity, but knows how to impress with its pliability.
    • Nose
      87 87
Very nice Islay smoke parallel to Laphi, of course not as intense :)
Behind it is a sweet brightness that reminds me of chewing gum (Wrigley's Juicy Fruit).
You can smell the sauterenes finish with hints of menthol.
    • Taste
      86 86
He starts sweetly and tickles the tongue with the alcohol, which is very well integrated. The smoke is beautiful in harmony with the light fruits. Mirabelle and peach with honey. Very light spiciness from the oak. I like it!
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium length finish with sweet smoke.
Saliva flow is stimulated again with mandarins.

  23. Varrek scored this whisky 83 points Expert Junior

Very young, but smoke not so rough as I expected. Pretty sweet and ashy, a bit salty finish. Nose fruity and light, that is the plus of wine finish

  26. EvilAFI scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Nice nose, palate is restrained, but the finish for me is it’s best part. I can taste a white grape freezie outside by a ashy fire.
    • Nose
      87 87
      Mild peat, rubber, melon, grapes
    • Taste
      86 86
Ashy smoke/peat, sweetness (grape juice), pepper, a bit flat (expecting more to happen)
    • Finish
      88 88
Wine influence found here, sweet grapes and peat balance nicely.

Tasted at Tunsberg Whisky Festival 2019.
Have considered getting this as I've had a couple of Sauternes matured whiskies that have been very good. like the BenRiach 15YO.
However, here the combination of Sauternes and peat are more of a clash than a match to me.
Happy to have tried it, so I can strike it off my wish list.
    • Nose
      83 83
      The nose is interesting.
Clear influence by the wine casks, it smells of Sauternes.
      White fruits, mellon, grapes.
Underneath is a carpet of peaty smoke and light saltyness.
    • Taste
      77 77
      Nice rich mouthfeel.
      Arrives with Sauternes, fruity sweetness.
Quickly followed by smoke, peat, salt. All much more dominant than on the nose.
To me this combination doesn't work too well.
Rather than melting into an interesting combination they seem to stay seperate and compete for attention.
    • Finish
      76 76
A medium lenght finish where there is some fruit, but a rather pale and muted peat wins this battle of tastes in the very end.

Variety of flavors that are in good balance with each other. Sauternes certainly adds something.
Slightly sour in the aftertaste, but not unpleasant.
Alcohol percentage of 50% Is high but I understand Kilchoman's choice because adding too much water makes it too sweet.
Very clever how they can make a beautifully balanced whisky at Kilchoman every time with relatively little age. Of course, quality, not age, should determine the price. Still, I feel like it's a decent amount for a 5 year old whisky.

The Sauternes influence is clearly visible despite the lack of full-time maturity. At the Sauternes Club and also a barrel tasting the Sauternes was almost over it, which is why I can understand the decision to finish. Overall, very tasty to drink.
    • Nose
      88 88
As expected, the combination of the spicy Klilchomanrauch and the sweet Sauterneseinfluss dominant, honey, slightly vinous, a little banana, I think in conjunction with the honey to a Chinese dessert buffet, vanilla, in the background also a pinch of pepper, also a sourish fruit note is there, yellow towards Mirabelle, after the first sip, I also have marzipan, which I like very much
    • Taste
      88 88
nice mouthfeel, creamy, sweet and clear intense smoke, also honey, slightly cinnamon spiciness, vanilla, then the banana, some acidity, again mirabelle, white chocolate, pleasant drinking strength
    • Finish
      87 87
in the background the fruit notes become clearer, very banana-like, the smoke is still present, warming, medium long, a hint of bitter oak

    • Taste
Sweet, slow arrival, winy grapes, salty at the end
    • Finish
Sweet, winey grapes, round, full feeling, peatsmoke only the end. The finish of the finish: sweet peatsmoke with winy grapes ends very light spicy with nutmeg
