a soliger Malt but no one in which I burst into jubilation
would have expected more at 18y
Where is the character of Glenrothes?
    • Nose
first thin, bananas, sweetish, some grass, vanilla, slightly caramel, later malt, slightly musty / earthy, becomes spicy
    • Taste
      soft and oily
Oak becomes more, spicy increases, vanilla and caramel come
later: slightly bitter, roasted aromas towards coffee / espresso
    • Finish
      medium to long
      bitter, spicy oak, later vanilla

  2. Issie did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

    • Nose
slightly musty, some sulfur (matches), honey, blackberries, grasses, strawberries, pine needles, dried fruits after a while
    • Taste
      Honey, strawberries, apple peel, wood

      Pretty ironed

Wow, I was quite negatively surprised. 10 years, 12 years and Maker's Cut from the new Soleo Collection I found terrific. The more excited I was on the 18 years, which is still very ambitious priced (90-120 €). The result is disappointing on the whole. Some cinnamon, some sherry, some honey, a little musty / sulfur. Pretty simple, all pretty boring, all pretty one-dimensional and without any impact. He looks much younger than the age would suggest. My recommendation: Better to reach 12 years. It is (for whatever reason) much more voluminous and complex. And that costs more than half less.

N- Now lets get serious, 18YO is here. Salted caramel with diced strawberry and candy floss. Sappy nuance of thick forest and sugar coated pine erupts and bring on even more earths, saps freshness and new leather ginger. All spices, cardamon, quality treacle with underlying sour tinge. Crushed leaf and white wild flower with peppercorn at the tail. Is modern but very compact. (94/23)

P- Coffee, cut strawberry, candy floss with dash of spices. Quite sublime sweetness follow by lightly charred notes that resembling fine runny caramel, alluring savoury notes to keep things interesting. (91/22)

F- Medium-long, elegantly spicy, soothing, seems calm but with whirlpool of depthness. (87/21)

B/B- 92/23 A dram that reminded me of bagpipe shrilling in the air.

I can not quite understand all the bad reviews. The nose takes a bit of getting used to. On the palate, he brings this out again. The finish is neither particularly spectacular nor particularly unspectacular for a 18yo. Pleasant medium-deep drinking pleasure with not too modern profile.

      Vanilla, honey, green bananas, butterscotch
    • Taste
      86 86
Oily, creamy, sirupy, good sweetness, more bananas, vanilla, creme brulee, spices
    • Finish

Medium long, warm, a tad bitter

    Baked Pears

In September 2018 Glenrothes announced she would be replacing the Vintage releases with a brand new series with age statements, listening to the name Soleo Collection. This was the first, and influencial, decision taken after Berry Brothers sold the brand back to former owner Edrington. Six new malts have been released: 10 Year Old, 12 Year Old, Whisky Maker’s Cut, 18 Year Old and 25 Year Old. The 40 Year Old should follow soon. Soleo refers to the Andalusian sun, where the sherry casks used by Glenrothes to mature their malt comes from.

The nose starts a little weak, in all honesty. Some banana, apricots, (a lot of) vanilla, caramel, barley sugar and some baked pears. Nice notes of milk chocolate. Smells younger than its age.

Soft and light bodied, a tad oily. Again very sweet on pears and oranges. Honey and caramel. Becomes a bit spicy thanks to ginger, white pepper and some espresso.

The finish is just shy of long, docile and pleasant. Some nuts at the death.

Card players’ whisky, but I have to say I’m not very impressed. Especially considering this is 18 years old. Not complex at all and quite regular. Around 100 to 120 EUR for a bottle.
