Very cool smoke, and a lot to discover underneath. Fruit, vanilla, sweetness and also some savory notes. One of the most pleasant smokers for the price offered

The standard Ledaig 10y is already a very good one, but I personally found this one a tick better for my liking. A 93 points from Jim Murray.

    Ashes & Soot

The new entry level range from G&M was dubbed Discovery. This Ledaig, the peated version of Tobermory, appeared in this series in 2018. It’s a mix of both bourbon and sherry casks and was bottled at drinking strength.

This nose is very good. Very aromatic and round. Up front I get some oak wood – simply freshly sawed planks – but that is soon joined and balanced by lovely notes of citrus and vanilla, overripe banana and cookie dough. Opposite that I also get some umami traits like sauerkraut (!) and dried ham. A soft trace of woodsmoke gives additional depth. Very good indeed!

The body is a tad loo light for me. But the taste is just fine. All kinds of sweetness like vanilla, banana and toffee against woodsmoke, peat, the juice in which olives are kept in a jar and liquorice. Throw in some black pepper and nutmeg. Halfway through the obligatory ashes and soot appear.

Those ashes persist in the medium long finish, joined by a fresh touch of lime juice.

You would expect these entry level malts to be less complex than their predecessors in the Connoisseur Choice series, but that is not the case at all. This is very, very good stuff.

Interesting bottling for a 12 yo Ledaig expression. Being the 10 yo one of my favourites, this one is not disappointing at all, even if a bit surprising.
It adds some grassy and sweet flavours to the usual marine taste. Peppery and sweet at the same time, it feels smoothet and less powerful than the 10 yo, yet it reveals a vibrant oaky and strong finish.

Sweet, peaty, cold ash on the nose. Fruity touch of red apple peel and citrus, slightly salty fresh. There is also sweetness on the tongue, very salty appearance with clear smoke, smoked bacon. Long, sweet-peaty finish, apple peel again. Very round, pleasant single malt that makes you want the next dram.

Good whisky. The smell was great. Unfortunately, it loses a bit of intensity and complexity. Still a nice drink. A comparison with 10yo would certainly be interesting.
    • Nose
In smell more dense, at first glance smoky (but far from Ardbeg, or a lot of smoke from Islay). Untypical, soft and abraded salinity, it reminds me exactly of Ledaig 10, where this was also. After a long smell, there are traces of some strange heavier aroma - slightly rotten flesh. Pleasantly smoked plums in the background. Nice, distinctive, complex, dense.
    • Taste
Pretty salty, slightly smoked. Creamy. There are citrus and some wood. In the end, it seemed to me that he was losing a little bit of intensity and seemingly diluted.
    • Finish
      Smoke - woody. Medium length.

Quite dilute and thin, unfortunately not a grotesque or a head plucking one. 84/85.
    • Nose
      85 85
Peat, citruses, seaweed, unripe banana, grass, herbals and mint.
    • Taste
      85 85
Salted minerals, dry wood, vanilla, banana, ash, pepper and nutmeg.
    • Finish
      84 84
      Medium length, dry, smoky, spicy.

I had the opportunity to in-depth immersion in this release of my favorite distillery in the form of several approaches from the moment the bottle is uncorked until it washed off in the glasses of the last drops. At the beginning manifested an obsessive tartar sulfur in the scent, the taste looked empty. However, the second event of the whisky became better, sulfur disappeared, and in the future remained a pleasant, very pink bar option.
    • Nose
Light, peat, fried greasy salty fish, notes of sulfur, salty, rubbing foam, bread toast, boiled egg, meat, with time appear citrus notes, lemon lollipops, husky lime, shed with cattle (wool and bacon), earthy, medical nuances, industrial gases, sprouted grains, apricot peppermint, apple jelly, honey and banana notes.
    • Taste
Oily, ash, pepper, industrial, cigarette ash, cigar leaves, rubber, nuts.
    • Finish
Pepper, peat, slightly sweetish, warming, again tobacco leaf, cashew nuts, apricot, banana, rubber, long enough.

Not much too fault here. Balanced, enough complexity and definitely Ledaig.
    • Nose
Hints of sauerkraut and ripe banana, with a whiff of seaweed, but also vibrant citrus fruits and vanilla. A touch of sweet cookie dough as well. Oh, and of course pretty smoky. Think charcoal and wood smoke. The balance is top notch.
    • Taste
Salty with hints of olive brine, but also fudge and milk chocolate. Plenty of peat smoke, as well as a touch of tar and licorice. Hints of vanilla and banana, and a subtle spiciness (nutmeg and pepper). Nice creamy mouthfeel too.
    • Finish
      Lingering ashes and lime.

  18. The Macallan scored this whisky 72 points Connoisseur

Doable, but not my cup of tea
    • Nose
      Medicinal, briny, smoky, fruity (citrus)
    • Taste
      Briny, malty, slightly sweet, fruity
    • Finish
      Salty/smoky, minerals in the back
