Whisky Reviews for Bunnahabhain 11-year-old GM

[November, 2018] Another release that scored very high in the most recent "Whisky Magazine" tasting with 89 points from Rob and 91 points from Lyndsey. Again I am very curious if my own taste buds confirm these high scores or support the rather low ratings here at WB...

...and again they are in line with the average-only scores here at WB, unfortunately. This is the typical modern "dirty" Bunna style that was created rather out of desperation (lacking investments) than intentionally. It somehow became a trademark Bunna characteristic and a lot of modern whisky drinkers love this (which is absolutely fine with me). So please forgive me my preference for the old "clean" Bunnahabhain style...

[April, 2019] I re-tasted this dram tonight and fully confirm my old review and score of ... the "dirty side" of Bunnahabhain.
    • Nose
      83 83
The colour is russetmuscat and the nose offers the typical "dirty" profile of modern Bunnahabhain drams. I know a lot of people like this but I prefer clean (traditional style) whiskies. The dirty aromas are cheesy and meaty notes that usually come from broader (than usual) cut-off points during distillation to maximise output (some "dirty" foreshots and feints are included). Funny, that in our modern "whisky boom" time such faulty drams create a followership of their own with even so-called experts join in...
    • Taste
      87 87
The taste is sweet on cooked fruits, marzipan, nuts and tobacco smoke with again some meaty off-notes (that others might like). It is not layered but some spices (cinnamon) pep it up after a while. The taste is much better than the nose (to me) but still it is not great according to my taste buds. Water turns the dram smoother but it releases more of the cheesy and meaty off-notes, unfortunately.
    • Finish
      84 84
The initial mouthfeel is rather unimpressive with neither warming nor coating moments. The finish is of medium length with more chalky and peaty flavours and a slightly drying end (cold ashes). Not very impressive, to be honest...

    • Nose
Very deep sherry tones, with dark chocolate, freshly cracked walnuts, juicy fruit bread, blood oranges, forest honey, earthy accents and a soft smoke.
    • Taste
Medium heavy and oily. Full sherry tones, pickled black walnuts and delicate smoke, as well as chocolate-covered gingerbread.
    • Finish
Long, sherry-toned and nutty. Later also oak, leather soft smoke and chocolate.

    Color: Australian Muscat
    • Nose
      82 82
Kind of meaty , with usual sherry notes of dried fruits, orange, figs, and a hint of peat in the background
    • Taste
      80 80
Sweet spices and fruits at first, touch of bacon, some peat smoke, and bitterness, black pepper. A bit watery unfortunately at first, becoming very lightly creamy after some time.
    • Finish
      83 83
Finish: Quite long, on dry oak, dried fruits and a bit nutty

A nice sherried single malt for the current autumnal season. Solid with layers of complexity. The influence of the sherry cask isn't overpowering the whisky at all, leaving enough space for the delicate dried fruits and warming spices to come through. Pleasantly quaffable!

I thank Kirsch Whisky - The House of Whiskies for the complimentary sample!

    • Nose
Sherry aromas nicely mingle with notes of dried fruits, oranges and peaches. Sweet vanilla with autumnal spices, burnt treacle and a hint of peat in the back.
    • Taste
Starts sweet and fruity on the palate with toffee, dried fruits, peaches and plums. This is accompanied by a significantly warming spiciness of oak, black pepper, cloves and allspice. Slight waves of peat smoke and a whiff of cinnamon towards the finish.
    • Finish
The finish is medium to long with creamy fruit, warming allspice and subtle dry oak on the tail.

      With water:
Water brings more vanilla and fruitiness to the fore while the spicy flavours are tamed. Still sweet and creamy on the palate with dried fruits, vanilla and lots of peaches. Less warming and less spicy with a delicate nuttiness lingering towards the finish. The finish is medium long, sticky sweet and subtle dry with walnuts and a whiff of peat smoke on the tail.

No notes tried at a tasting but I remember for an 11 year it was very good.

    Bottler's tasting notes:
Aroma: Sherry aromas mingle with orange marmalade. Dried fruit notes develop; subtle spices weave through creamy vanilla toffee.
Taste: Deliciously smooth and creamy; a gentle warming cinnamon spice matures into flavours of chewy dates and stewed plums with walnut undertones.
Finish: Smooth milk chocolate with lingering dried fruit and hints of nuts.

    • Taste
dust, plum and tangerine cooked, spices a little sweet, back wood and vanilla, it's sweet, it's also oily
    • Finish
no particularity clean, but a pile of scents a little too all set back!
