Whisky Reviews for Bowmore 1996 ElD

"Velvety flesh", which does not mean much, but I understand - and it's a compliment. Vanilla, some lemony notes. Discrete cooked fruits.

The fruits come back, accompanied by a melted smoke. Velvet in the mouth. Sweet spices, but also pepper.

Sweet spices persist in the finish, but pushing the volume! What an exit!

Impressive balance between a salty iodine that invites you to travel, and gourmet and sweet fruits that whet the appetite. Slightly earthy vanilla, sesame sponge cake, white fruits, plums, grapes, pear. In the mouth it is relatively light, the pepper rises, the vanilla becomes candied, a little lemon, then it is a very successful finish, quite violent, citrus, pear, candied fruits, more or less exotic, mango, melon. Cane sugar to finish.

    From Serge: 91 Points
Colour: gold. Nose: this one’s more vegetal, more on sour beers, porridge, dairy cream, that old tweed jacket, that rainwater, crabs, scallops, fern, autumn leaves… With water: a touch of Jerez vinegar, some ripe peaches, roasted peanuts, green tea… Mouth (neat): ah, perfect. Mango juice, grapefruit, anchovy brine, kippers, grapeseed oil, seawater… With water: salty grasses, sauvignon blanc, ultra-dry champagne, grapefruit juice, brine, gentian eau-de-vie… Finish: rather long, sour, but with an extremely pleasant tropical fruitiness… Would love to try this when it’s become, say, 30 years. A future new Sea Dragon? I’m even finding infinitesimal touches or rosewater in the aftertaste. Comments: this make is as fantastic as it used to be, assertive yet complex and delicate.
