The sherry butts take away the fun of 100% Islay a little too much. That makes it a bit more interchangeable with the products of other distilleries. Otherwise, the approach is understandable and you can clearly see the difference to previous years. I'm torn.

Compared to other 100% Islays, this is not my most favorite one.
I don't know if it's the taste of perfume or of sour grapes, but something seems to be in disharmony. Like 1 musician in an orchestra is out of tune.
The 50% alcohol covers most of it up, so adding water doesn't help.
But I don't want to be too negative. I would buy it again without thinking twice!
Maybe Anthony spoiled me with his other (very) high quality 100% Islays.

    1482) Kilchoman, 100% Islay, The 8th Edition (2018)

100% Islay from barley to bottle. Vatted together a 23 bourbon barrel with 7 olorosso cask, tuned down to 50% abv. Love the ethnic of Kilchoman to uphold the spirit on being a farm distillery. Thus plenty of hit and miss over the years with their various releases, still feel enthusiastic whenever able to get hold of a new releases from Kilchoman of any kind. However, feel that 100% Islay always at the shadow of Loch Gorm, which is closer to my heart.
    • Nose
N- Candy red plum with mild marine breezes. Coal smokes with dirty ashes on oily tar stained wall. Nicotine filter, at the same time a hot brew spiced black tea. Peats lurking with resinous emerged lates on, smoked dried white fish. (86/20)
    • Taste
P- Paper ashes with juicy sweet mango and canned lychee, though some dried bonito flakes too. Well intertwined of smoke and sweetness. Despite at 50%, this appeared harmless, shy and laid back. (86/20)
    • Finish
F- Medium, smooth and mild, gentle with candy sweet. More smokes developed with minty freshness reminds you the origin. Fine underlying dryness subside gradually. (85/19)

      B/B- 86/20

Because of the sherry casks too balsamic compared to the others. Not quite fitting with the ppm strength

One of my absolute favorite distilleries.
Overall, I find this whisky very successful, as always, despite its young age.
    • Nose
      85 85
First I get the citrus fruits in my nose. It is not only lemon, but also a hint of orange that comes to mind. Then nicely woven smoke, salt and vanilla. In the course I lose the orange again, but then light pear notes.
    • Taste
      80 80
First of all nice sweetness, again citrus fruits and smoke that occupies the mouth. This is quickly accompanied by a strong salty taste and pepper. In combination with a light bitter note, then also herbs.
    • Finish
      78 78
A decent finish for his age. Overall, however, rather medium long (or just medium short).
Especially salt, smoke, ash, very mineral.

A good all alround dram with apleasant medicinal peatiness aided by bourbon and sherry to make it quite full bodied.

Tasted at a new scottish distillery tasting (winner was Lindores Abbey 21 month old bourbon cask sample that even pulverized this Kilchoman (b.2018) 100% Islay).

Aroma: open, immediately malt, candy sweetness, marine shades and minerals, smoke and ash is in the background. A burnt piece of wood, damp earth, rotten autumn foliage. Creaminess, condensed milk, butterscotch, walnut, salt and minerality are enhanced.

Taste: first spices: red pepper, cloves, cinnamon, ginger, sweet creamy caramel, dried fruits (prunes, apples, pears) and stewed fruit, walnut, salt, minerals, burnt wood, grilled meat.

Finish: longer than average, mainly repetition of taste, minerals, salt crystals on the tongue, dried fruit compote, burnt meat, ash, wood, spices and bitter zest, compared to taste, sweets are much less.

    Rating: 87

Bottom line: classy Kilkhoman, as always, despite their young age, they managed to make a very complex and multifaceted malt! Sweet-mineral-salty, peat and phenols go completely on the background, I probably like this style more with them, with a fumigation of 20 PPM than the main line.

    Unequivocally Islay.

  30. Archer scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

The nose is still very promising, he is on the tongue and the finish with his perfumed touch but rather getting used to. I would not want to speak of a false mark yet.
    • Nose
      86 86
Spicy peat smoke with BBQ flavor, accompanied by lemon juice and pressed green grapes. Maybe something else pear. Wet straw - and after a while, a nice spice mixture peels out, a colorful mix, spice cupboard and nose in. Beautiful development in the nose from strong smoky-fruity to behaving smoky-spicy. Add nougat and marzipan.
    • Taste
      83 83
It rolls over the tongue with sweet grapes and spices. Peat smoke spreads immediately throughout the mouth. Then a slightly perfumed note passes through, a bit as if you smell the freshly laundered laundry moving in the wind on the leash. The impression weakens, but returns with each new sip. Unusual. Getting used to. Next to that is honey and milk chocolate, with time a mild herbal mix
    • Finish
      82 82
Medium to short, only slightly smoky, slightly oily, residual fruit and recurring wash.

The 8th Edition is a vatting of 23 ex-bourbon barrels and 7 ex-oloroso sherry butts filled between 2008 and 2012.
    Peat Level: 20ppm.
NOSE: Fresh, light citrus notes followed by a hint of caramel, sherry sweetness and charred peat embers.
PALATE: A lovely balance of fresh fruit, spiced chocolate and cinnamon with soft lingering peat smoke.
FINISH: A balance of intense sweetness, soft peat smoke and bursts of mixed fruit.
