I wasn’t sure about this one, and passed about half a year ago. Really pleased to have gotten a sample. A great marriage of port and spirit. Maybe one of the best I’ve come across. Oozes character from both the cask and the spirit, the way it should be. Great stuff.
    • Nose
      90 90
Quite herbal with fennel, anise, sage, licorice...dill? Port you say? Mineral (calcium), chalky, stewed red berries and Swedish berries.
    • Taste
      90 90
Thick, chewy but not overly sweet. Wine gums, more herbs and licorice root. Twigs and leaves in the fall. Menthol, calcium, sweet turns to dry, twizzlers. Very balanced, mouthcoating. I like this
    • Finish
      91 91
A boatload of Springbank minerality. Dusty gravel and calcium for days. Light earthy peat. The finish is very long more on Springbank than port, for sure and that’s great. Stewed strawberry in the background.

A very interesting port cask maturation. Not anything like a lot of the shortly finished speysiders you come across a lot nowadays, way better balance.
    • Nose
      88 88
Very much on the savory side of the spectrum, but also pretty sweet on forest fruits. Vegetable oil, bay leaf, green herbs, sweet liqourice, slightly toasted, leather, sour red currants, blackberries, raisins. Some broth in the background, both mineral, sour and sweet.
    • Taste
      88 88
Oily mouthfeel, savory, sweet and slightly sour. Green herbs, bay leaf, thicker notes of liquorice, dark chocolate, leather, some broth (much more mineral than in the nose), sour currants, sour cherries, blackberries, bitter citrus, a little pepper. I'd recommend skipping the addition of water as it brings out much more spiciness (especially sweet peppers), reducing complexity.
    • Finish
      89 89
Long: lots and ots of minerality, a clear sparkle (mineral water), tonic like bitterness, bitter citrus, liquorice, a sour and sweet note of wine (not the cheap supermarket kind) at the tail end.

NOSE: Opens with winey, fruity notes. Quite concentrated. A few drops of water really opens up the nose more. (89-90p)
TASTE: Rich, concentrated, dry & sweet fruitiness, liqorice. A few drops of water really opens it up; berries, luxury fruit candy. Lovely (90-91p)
FINISH: Sweet red fruits, nice winey astringency and acidity (89-90p)
    OVERALL: Total score 90 points.

Very nice, beautiful, strong and fruity whisky. In the nose and finish some subtle hints of smoke. Very nicely balanced, very pleasant dram.
    • Nose
      89 89
Fruity, red fruits, some leather, plums, and also some red winey thing. And spicy, with later on a whiff of smoke.
    • Taste
      90 90
Strong, pepper, fruity, a bit sour, plums. Thick structure. Winegums, with a mineral touch. Orange, and spicy again. Very full body.
    • Finish
      91 91
Still strong, fruity, with now a clearer whiff of smoke, some bitter note underneath, orange zest. Very long finish, with a lot of cigar tobacco now.

A challenging take on Springbank. This bottle started off pretty rough and disappointing. But if you give it a LOT of open time (like 6 months worth) it really takes shape and becomes a delectable malt. It took getting down to the half way spot in the bottle before this one began to hit its sweet spot. And even after that threshold has been reached, I find it still benefits from a considerable amount of added water. Without watering this down to around 48-50%, the fresh port is quite discordant with the strong SB distillate. But adding the water (not to mention the open airing out) this all sings together very nicely. I find with the addition of water, the port influence is more subdued. Certainly not one for beginners (I recommend Arran’s Port Cask finish as being much more accessible in that regard).
Scoring from initial pours - 85
Scoring given airing out and added water- 88 to 90

This is a rewarding malt, but you really have to work with the cask strength abv to find a balance.

I find most hints / tones from the official notes.
What I'm missing in the notes though, is the subtile hints of smoke / ash in the nose and finish that are definetely there. Very nice!

Uh - I think that's very cool! Since I can smell forever.
    • Nose
      91 91
Ashy fine smoke, plums, currants, raspberries, in short: tart red fruits, rich sweetness, with the time a bit winy, a little chocolaty
    • Taste
      90 90
Sweet and red fruit on, then directly light smoke, the Springbank-typical citrus notes come through, pleasant oak
    • Finish
      90 90
Sweet finish, light oak spicy smoke, nice mouthfeel

    From Society newsletter:
This bottling was chosen by Society members at the Campbeltown Malts Festival 2018 who voted for their favourite cask sample during the Society tasting. These members also inspired the official tasting notes with their descriptions of the dram during the tasting.

    Tasting Notes

Nose: Sweet and creamy; milk chocolate and mandarins closely followed by cinnamon and Scottish tablet.

Taste: Strawberries, plum jam; fruit cake. Cloves and a soft pepperiness emerge with rhubarb crumble and brambles.

Finish: The classic salty and misty coastal notes of Springbank sweep through the mouth. The finish is balanced and rounded with dry pepper, orange chocolates, ripe bananas and coconut shavings.
