...and this choice was an excellent one! This is a 4th fill maturation of the finest kind with an adorable complex and delicious aromas and flavours mix in a perfect harmonic setting. All is completely flawless and very, very quaffable - thank you for that selection, dear George! By the way, worth every buck...
The colour is auburn what is unusual dark for a 4th fill. This must have been a deeply sherry-soaked cask that contained the sherry for years (and not just for a few months like today's casks). The nose confirms this guess and offers a lush oloroso sherry profile with a great complexity. The sherry is rich but it leaves enough space for both the fine 'farclas malt to add its spirit-driven aromas and the wood to add delicious spices and herbs. This is all harmonic and without any off-note or imbalance. Another great 4th fill nose, for sure!
The taste is another 4th fill wonder: Unbelievably complex and layered on dozens of delicious flavours in great harmony. Wow, this is the old Traditional Scotch style at its finest. I can chew this for minutes and still I find some new interesting and tasty notes that all fit perfect into this "liquid symphony". No, I do not mention all the great impressions here - it is much more pleasure to find these out by yourself... But to state it boldly: No flaw or imbalance in the taste either, this dram is close to perfection!
The whisky arrives warming and nicely coating-creamy on the palate with a minor peppery feeling that is fine. The finish is long and vanishes nicely in different fading waves with more delicious chocolatey and spicy notes (my favourite combo). Water turns both the nose and taste smoother and hence more approachable but I like the boldness and challenge of the neat dram more...
