    Guimauve

Pittyvaich was built in 1974 to make malt for the popular Bell’s blend. The distillery was short-lived, however, closing in 1993 after just 19 years of operation. That’s less than the time this malt spent in the cask! There was already a 20 Year Old in the Special Releases in 2009. Now they offer a new one – from the same year 1989 – as a 28 Year Old. For me, this was the biggest surprise of this year’s series!

The nose starts deceptively simple, but there is much to be discovered if you take your time. A bit waxy with white fruit and coconut, but soon some guimauve develops (I love that note in a whisky!), some big fresh minty note shows itself and it gets more depth thanks for some nuts, vanilla and lemon zest. Very soft on the spices. Think ginger, liquorice and vanilla.

It is silky soft and fruity sweet, but with an immediate and unrelenting spiciness. Peppers, ginger and mint. Once the malt has settled on your palate, some delicious sweetness appears from marzipan and apple pastry, sultanas and some grapefruit. A surprisingly salty note appears. How entertaining and lovely.

The finish is medium long, soft and sweet and for a moment makes you doubt if the taste was in fact that spicy, that’s how soft this one dies.

This is only my 4th Pittyvaich (well, there are not that many after all), but by far the most lovely and complex I have had. So much so, that I am considering getting me one of these, despite the price tag of 350 EUR. This is a malt to share with friends on a very special occasion.

    Great malt, was directly bought.
    • Nose
I had the malt for about 10 minutes in the glass and I am revealed a wonderfully creamy nose full of creamy honey notes, sweets, light green fruits and sweet malt. A touch of green apples and a very pleasantly viscous yet fresh aroma, which only subtly oak can show. Are there still subtle citrus notes?
    • Taste
Creamy, sweet, super-soft mouthfeel. Really to clean. Here are quite clear citrus notes, which with the honey and vanilla notes form a flavor, which is best known from the mixture of lemon cake and the often existing icing. Sweet and yet slightly fruity. The green fruits now somewhat more restrained, but now slightly nutty notes. I can only advise the Malt to play something on the tongue, he really thanks.
    • Finish
Long and soft, elegant one would like to say. At the end a subtle oak and smoky note. No bitterness, no dryness, no dull mouthfeel. Here, too, slightly citrusy, the fruity-sweet aromas are only to be guessed, but now noticeably spicy without drifting into barrel notes.

      medium long, fruity, subtly dry

The nose has some citrus but I mainly get cereals at first with some honey coming in mixed with lime.
The palate is really good and I can sum it up by saying a bag of fruit gums with a tint amount of pepper at the back but the fruit gum taste is lovely.
The white pepper note increases with a little ginger but the fruit remains.
Sweet icing sugar emerges and the finish is long , spicy & sweet.
This is great and much better than I was expecting
I think for the money this is good value compared to similar priced whisky

  8. Calmar scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

A good representative of the wood-grain division, rich, well-balanced, age is felt, but a poor palette of derivatives, a simple composition, poor in half tones, this is partially offset by power and pressure.
    • Nose
Restrained, dry, fresh boards, fried potatoes, animal fat, mineral notes - grindstone, stone chips; lemon peel, floral tones, vanilla.
    • Taste
Dense, saturated, strong oak shades, vanilla, ginger, red pepper, lemon zest, sweet creamy and pastry notes, some tropical fruits.
    • Finish
Spicy, refreshing, pepper, ginger, oak, grain, vanilla, shortbread cookies.
