I was in Waitrose (UK supermarket) and saw this 12 year for £55, how on earth does a distillery with few fans justify that sort of price tag for what appears to be a mundane offering like this?

Caramel and pretty nice. Of course, everything depends on the price. He is not worth his 40 euros, although I will not name him unpleasant.
    • Nose
Wood chips, toffee caramel and toffee sweets, cookies, some honey and daisies, red apples, gingerbread muffins.
    • Taste
A bit of sweetness and barely perceptible sourness, there is a tart bitterness, not bad. Orange zest and cookies, honey and spices.
    • Finish
Grips, barely knits, warms, simple, homely and understandable. A piece of wood, malt notes, pastries and honey.

After the first couple of drams I was positively surprised but now the bottle is empty and I will not replace it for sure.

In spite of its minimum % it really benefits from adding water. Within reasonable limits you don't need to be afraid of drowning it.
    • Nose
Light nose with ethanol, orange- and lemon peel, caramel and synthetic rubber.

After some time in the glass (same effect with water added) it improves when the caramel comes through more and the alcohol less. The rubber is still there though.
    • Taste
Two dimensional interaction among lemons, caramel and oak. The taste is not bad but it disappears almost immediately and gets replaced by a neutral alcohol taste.

  5. thijs100 scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

Not bad, but far from a whisky that leaves me wanting more.
    • Nose
Very sweet with notes of marzipan and bubblegum paving the way for apricot, caramel and vanilla custard. A touch of oak shavings, but very subtle.
    • Taste
Fairly creamy and surprisingly spicy (clove and pepper), with a hint of breakfast cereal. A hint of bitter orange peel, as well as charred oak and vanilla. A touch of cappuccino.
    • Finish
Slightly herbacious. The spices and bitterness leave an impression.

  6. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 80 points Connoisseur

OK, solid standard with a few "funky" notes.
    • Nose
Fresh, grainy nose, vanilla, some light fruit, slightly smoky oak notes, some burnt, but also a slightly sourish yoghurt note. Unusual.
    • Taste
In the mouth again a hint of yoghurt, fruit, slightly citrus, sparkling, some oak and dried apricots
    • Finish
not so short, a bit herbaceous, and then a bad bitternote, towards the end something Kumquat or something.

  7. wisekycourse scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

nose on sweet spices, malt, almonds, some vanilla and cooked apple
mouth more pleasant with a little stewed fruit (apple and nectarine), a bit bitter, dry wood and back of spices
a little hazelnuts, a little fresh fruit and compote, vanilla and a chocolate trace.
final simple and short on the same scents, drought and wood.

Fettercairn, your traditional Highland style whisky with a Whyte Mackay hands on, touch ? They tried to coat it over with a smoove and bland style, they definitely succeed. I paid nearly £50.

Why do WB remove good photos, for poor ones instead ?
    • Nose
      84 84
Sweet, honey, floral, red apples, ginger, vanilla, ginger biscuits, beacon and a smoke peat.
    • Taste
      78 78
40% Just kills it, spice, pepper & oily. Boring as hell.
    • Finish
      79 79
Subsides into darkness ? Some Oak and spice.

  9. KayMeertens scored this whisky 81 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
      84 84
Apricot, red apple, vanilla pudding. A pretty nice first fill-dominated nose.
    • Taste
      80 80
More malty, more of a refill profile. Apple, almond and vanilla.
    • Finish
      78 78
      Almond, apple, vanilla and peach.

  10. Totoro scored this whisky 79 points Expert Senior

Yeasty, fruity, saccharine, with a bit of a bite for 40%.
