  1. Gloin scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
Caramel, red wine, sweet, perfumed, herbs, a touch of soap ?, light wood notes
    • Taste
Soft, oily body; sweet, soft licorice, wood, strawberries, milk chocolate
    • Finish
medium long, sweet, again whole milk chocolate

  2. diamond2000 scored this whisky 86 points Member Senior

Aroma: perfumery, berry jelly, exotic (and not very) dried fruits - dates, dried apricots, figs, raisins, with a little sourness; roasted walnut, lacquered old furniture.

Taste: red pepper, compote, grape pulp with bone, burnt caramel, nuts, tobacco leaf, dark chocolate, Riga Balsam.

Finish: medium duration, again nut-tobacco with the end of the grass bitter, quite pleasant.

    Rating: 86

The result: a very interesting representative of Highland, with a rich taste, aroma and finish, in which the sherry barrel does not pull the blanket over itself, but successfully complements the base.

  3. LeChiffre scored this whisky 84 points Expert Junior

Overall, a solid, fruity-spicy and pleasantly sweet malt. Good flavors, albeit nothing outstanding or very complex. Complicated, tasty standard.

    • Nose
directly red fruits of sherry, strawberries, blackberries, some wood, neat sweetness, some sugar and cinnamon
    • Taste
very soft on the tongue, the fruits go in the direction of red apple, something citrusy, also here mild pepper and a very slight bitterness
    • Finish
For a long time it gets dry, the apple still holds something in the mouth

So this whisky is often underestimated. A great average for a good price. Well balanced, he goes into the final round. Respect!

Burnt sugar meets sherry notes. Very sweet he starts and yet he stays hot. You can smell delicious fruits that are rare in this price range.
    • Taste

In the mouth is a very beautiful body. With sweet vanilla he lets the hot nose disappear again. Tasty spicy.

Medium long and sweet with ripe fruit it goes spicy with an earthy touch of wood. Refill announced.

Noses incredibly yeasty, musty, lactic, tending toward astringent sourness. An acquired taste, to be sure. The other component is high-quality, seemingly-older-than-its-stated-age, dark and dirty, sherry-matured spirit. Between the creamy citrus and the leathery oloroso aromas, you can detect the intriguing interplay of combined Bourbon and sherry maturation. Certainly not a shy nose, and big fun for those of us who aren't necessarily looking for a smooth and polished crowd pleaser without any potentially offensive notes.

On the tongue the Caledonian shifts between sour and sweet, with clearly discernible European-oak prickliness. There's ample vanilla and citrus from the American oak as well as dry, nutty sherry notes. The lactic character from the nose persists into the taste. Funky, dirty, sour, very Edradour (hey, that rhymed!). Again: not for everyone, you have to be in the mood for this hardcore Highlander.

Definitely a dram whose zany character boasts enough power for it to serve as a digestif that "stands its ground". This is peculiar and strong enough to overcome any aromas and tastes that may still linger after a long meal. An after-ten-pm kind of affair, if you will. Or a midnight malt? Glad I've bought it, but one bottle seems like enough for a lifetime.
