Part 4/8 of a Balblair range share. After the standard 12, 15 and 18 it’s now time to dive into the world of vintages.
    • Nose
Immediately this ‘05 vintage gives way more outspoken character then the new range of age statements! I get pears, vanilla, an earthy note and mild spices. It got a rather light maturation which I like. Very delicate and characterful.
    • Taste
Fresh and friendly. Very decent body. Sweet and sour. Burst of citrus fruits, vanilla and other mild spices. Apple, orange, licorice, cinnamon. Not a lot of depth though.
    • Finish
Short-medium. There is actually a very pleasant hint of smoke in the finish as well as a more barley like note. It reminds me of freshly baked bread. That is quite a surprise. Also some white peppers.

It is a pitty that it is a tad dry/bitter at the end and the finish is rather short. But I have to say, this is more exciting then the new age statement bottlings.

This is a honest malt, close to the spirit. The oak only had a limited influence, which results in a 'young' albeit beautifully fruity dram. The new make of Balblair has sulpherous notes that decrease during maturation, traces can still be found in this dram.

Young and malty, reminding me somehow of Dutch genever with its juniper. It's very fresh, with melons, golden raisins, kiwi and banana peel. Some yogurt and fresh laundry too.
    • Taste

Sweet alcohol malt sugars at first, but there's much more to it. Fresh and sour fruits like grapefruit, lemon and soursop. Some flowers, vanilla, croissant, and a surprising note of cinnamon and sulpher.
    • Finish
      85 85
Fresh and sweet-sour citrus fruits with elderflower, some bread, malt sugars and a hint of sulpherous smoke.

Clear colour and light on the palate for an interesting dram.
Sweet fruits and vanilla on the nose, followed by a slightly edgy taste of fresh grass, lemon and vanilla again.
A drop of water makes it more easily enjoyable, yet its smooth and just a bit spicy Highland profile reveals quite peculiar, giving an enjoyable crafty feeling.

Fresh apples, a little spicy, it gets sweeter with some water. I probably had too many sherry-influenced Balblairs thus I find myself enjoying this Balblair 2005 vintage a lot. It's different from the new 12yo age-statement and I love this 2005 way more.

A lovely dram! Floral, citrus fruits, a bit of a vanilla, slightly spicy, well integrated alcohol. Very refreshing, perfect for relaxed summer evenings. Super easy to drink, good value. Sadly discontinued.

Fresh, little sour, some sweet notes of peaches on syrup. Notes of white wine. Little straw. Not really inviting to be honest....
    • Taste

Sweet arrival. Turns a little bit more sour, but doesn't develop much. Some honey and some hay.
    • Finish

Short length. Little sweet, bit woody but turns bitter in the end.
