Develops extremely well in the opened bottle and the initially very dominant wood notes become less

[June, 2020] A quick review of a sample...

...which is an average modern sherried malt without flaws but without highlights either. The alcohol is very punchy and distracting with the neat dram so a fair share of water is needed to really enjoy it. One for the lovers of the "mighty oompf" in whisky, those who prefer delicate and balanced stuff (like me) should rather shy away.
    • Nose
      85 85
The colour is russetmuscat and the nose is quite punchy first, the alcohol feels very strong even after some breathing. The profile offers a standard modern sherry maturation with grassy and floral aromas of the malt. No flaws but no highlights either - and it certainly cries out for water.
    • Taste
      85 85
The taste is about the same: an average modern sherry profile powered by strong alcohols which are not very well integrated. The malt adds barley sugars and leafy flavours and the wood is at the edge of being dominant. Not my preferred style of sherried drams, to be honest. But there are no obvious flaws either, so it all depends on your personal preferences (spiked or balanced, I prefer the latter).
    • Finish
      84 84
The dram arrives very hot on the palate (punchy like the nose) with just a minor coating effect. The finish is of medium length and dries out significantly with more bitter impressions (the tannins take their toll). Water is essential on this dram: A minor reduction turns both nose and taste even more punchy (alcohol-driven) but a fair share does its job. At about 43% abv the dram gets smoother and releases more aromas in the nose and flavours on the palate. Still the profile stays that of an average-only modern sherried malt but it is easy drinkable now.

    Blind tasting

I like it very well, strong oak and sweetness are wonderfully balanced.
    • Nose
Directly very intense caramel, spice and a lot of oak. Alcohol can be clearly felt. After a few minutes there are apples and some lemon. Even a musty, old book note comes through. The longer it stands, the more it opens, now vanilla in the form of creme brulee, and exotic fruits such as kiwi.
    • Taste
strong onset, oily / silky mouthfeel. Apple, kiwi and caramel, vanilla, backed by a lot of oak.
    • Finish
Medium length, still a lot of oak, dark chocolate, and vanilla. A cooling mint note and lemon leave a certain freshness.

A decent nose all on chocolate and nuts basically at first.
Some nice spice note emerge mixed in with rich fruit cake.
    The palate
Spicy, fruity and just a hint of sulphur but it is ok and does not spoil the profile.
Faint hints of peat mix with the sherry and then blackcurrant but then out of nowhere another wave of spice and this time the peat is more noticeable, this is really good stuff.
Dark orange thick cut marmalade and more chocolate and nuts.
Finish is not the longest but the spice remains with a little more breakfast marmalade coming through.
Very nice whisky with good balance and lovely spice notes

Nose: Wine notes, lots of wood, After adding water a more fruity aroma. Some sour fruit
Taste: A little sour and spicy at the first try and slightly closed in taste. But when you add water, the taste opens and leaves Ginger and the smell of cheese.
Rating 88 Finish quite a long profile rather mild.

Actually, a beautiful sherry old. However, I have somehow especially in the taste so a certain mineral note and something dull, which is not good for me. Actually, I do not mind. But I do not like the way it is here.
Too bad. Otherwise, a good malt.
