At a similar high level as the previous batches of the last years. While Batch # 17 is missing a bit of an exciting and surprising accent, as was the case with the previous batches. However, one can not hide the fact that when you fill in batches, it is not easy to stay at the same level. This is a great 12 CS, original Springbank DNA.
    • Nose
      89 89
Sweet and fruity with apricots, peaches, pears, some banana and a hint of smoke. The initially still dominant sweetness is accompanied by a salty, mineral, almost maritime note. Pepper, cloves and a mild mixture of herbs are added after some time. No repression of the fruits, but spicy addition.
    • Taste
      89 89
In a strong and dry onset with well-integrated alcohol first coffee powder, chocolate, toffee, honey and vanilla. In the background with a sweetness that can not be defined, but then peels out as pears and peaches. Pepper, salt, bitter orange marmalade with pieces. Hazelnut brittle, almonds.
    • Finish
      88 88
Medium long, dry, with orange peel, nuts and almonds, with a dash of honey.

It ’s better to miss each other. In the first few years after Genting changed the packaging, the first one clearly noticed that some flavors have been chosen. The sense of filth disappeared. Except for the green 15yo, there is another way out. Others are all better than one crab. Is Springbank a surname kan or a high surname? Is this a problem?
    • Nose
The rumors are pleasant citrus fudge accompanied by a little bit of soot. After getting closer, a strong and straight wine came into the nose, and the fruit became rich and sticky. The jam made of various apricots, reeds, plantains, carambola and the floral fragrance of honey were intertwined. Under the fruity taste, the cold side of the winery began to manifest itself, with salty, sea salt, metal and other flavors faintly cold. After the minerals, the flavor tends to be bland, iodine, licorice, cow cheese, roasted nuts and some oak spicy common in low-year whisky.

      Fruit 7, milk (honey) 5, gold minerals 4, nuts 3, peat 2.
    • Taste
The maritime flavor began to regain its strength, regaining a little initiative from the fruit, salt water, soda crackers, salted cheese, pepper, violent and enthusiastic, it should be 30% Bourbon barrel credit. The citrus fruit retreated to the second line, and was soon overshadowed by the accompanying black chocolate, hazelnut and barrel flavor.
Fullness, good fat feel, medium sweetness, no tannins, little sourness, no bitter bottom.
    • Finish
Medium length, soy fat, cocoa powder, thin fruit.

When freshly opened, I really struggled a little with this bottle.
At first, this seemed to be too much into one direction, and lacking complexity, and being a little too heavy on the sulphur (usually I am not a sulphur sensitive person). But after some time in an open bottle, this turned gradually into a winner.
This particular batch does not have a cunning little twist or quirk like a lot of it's predecessors, and this is not an overly complex Springbank, but still, to me it is the heart of Springbank's character in the very limelight. No off notes, big body, bold flavours/aromas, excellent balance.
Not much out there right now that beats this simplistic, dry but sweet, briny, fruity, carbolic character.
If only the finish were longer...

    P.S.: Swims like a a champ!
    • Nose
'90s Gatorade 'Orange', quite some brine, orange, some coal smoke, gunpowder, mineral, some licorice, becomes fruitier, canteloupe melon, a little star fruit and guava, a dry european oak note, some resin, it's tangy and zesty and fruity as well as carbolic and flinty.
    • Taste
briney sweet fruity flinty arrival, orange primarily, zesty as well, some licorice, becomes more tropical after a moment, canteloupe melon again as well as a little guava and star fruit, maybe even some passion fruit, then it's carbolic side joins the choir at just the right volume with some gunpowder and some soot, a tiny little bit of coconut rounds everything off very nicely, excellent balance as well, but still maintains it's edge even when quite diluted.
    • Finish
brine, some licorice, coal smoke, some gunpowder, some blood/bitter orange, short to medium length.

This batch doesn’t have as many of those dirty Springbank funky notes as I recall the small 1oz pour of SB 12 CS Batch 9 had. In fact, I’d argue that it is definitely almost different in style but I’d like to revisit another pour of that batch.⁣ Regardless, the balance of sweet, fruit, smoke, and salt is awesome on this batch.⁣

    Simply Excellent
    • Nose
Initially, a musty cellar with tons of malty vanilla sweetness and lots of fruity notes... apples, oranges, lemons. In the background there is a strong maritime influence as I pick up a sea salt/sea breeze note. Such an enjoyable nose. Really damn yummy!⁣
    • Taste
Medium to thick mouthfeel. Sweet, smoky, peppery and salty. Nice balance. Lots of fruits, raisins, dried apricots. Sweet bread. Pepper. Light smoke on the palate with lots of saltiness.
    • Finish
Medium length. It finishes with this really excellent light smoke that transitions into a sweet, lemony note. Minimal alcohol burn and dangerously easy to sip. Big fan of the finish on this.⁣

A lovely Springbank, more like an upgraded version of the standard 10YO, with that light peat and full on coastal notes and mineral.

    iodized smoke,
cooked citrus, macerated, some even grilled cherry
vanilla and malt and dry wood
the mouth leaves on a fine peat, lemon, spices a little peppered and fruits cooked again, in compote; we feel the mold of wood too; some milk caramel too
long enough on the same scents, quite subtle.
