- Serge has awarded 90 points to the Flaming Heart 6th Edition. "Typical John Glaser work, made with the right malt whiskies. If you want to recreate Led Zeppelin, better have Robert Plant and Jimmy Page on board, I suppose."

Salty, maritime, typical Islay smoke, light fruits undefined, tangerines, lime, slightly sweet, alcohol well integrated
Still the typical Islay smoke of a very definite distillery, alcohol very well integrated.
Suspect a single cask, which could speak for age again, candied tropical fruits, pleasant oak, light acidity
Medium long, slightly peppery, very harmonious, BUT nose and taste promise more than the finish can hold
Conclusion: Oh a Blend ... but Caol Ila is not to hide ;-)
- Good but maybe just a little too expensive for what you get. A price level just under €100 would be more fitting.
A rounded smokiness, sandlewood, wax, salted butter, vanilla, summer fruits like apricot and pineapple, lemon zest, fudge, maple syrup, mildly floral, some anice and faint liquorice.
Honied sweetness, salty smoke, vanilla, citrus, a little tropical, nutty, toffee, liquorice and some white pepper. Also just a tad dusty.
Long: a little sweetness, liquorice and quite some dry wood smoke and charcoal. Not bad, but I would have liked some more complexity here.
I tried the 4th Edition of this Flaming Heart in 2013 and the 5th Edition in 2016. Today, the 6th Edition of this blended malt is in my glass. While the ABV remains the same, the composition is slighty different each time. For this sixth release they used barrels, hogsheads, French oak and American oak. The lead players are still Clynelish and Caol Ila.
On the nose, the Caol Ila is immediately noticeable, but it cannot hide the waxiness of Clynelish (that’s a good thing, too). It has a lovely sweetness, which makes me think a sherry cask went into the mix. Touches of clay, a whiff of diesel and baked apples. Another bull’s eye, if you ask me.
It is fairly powerful, quite peppery and salty and the peat immediately takes the reins. Feisty spiciness and nice development of smoke. To my surprise this is a lot less sweet than the nose promised and also a lot less sweet than the previous two releases if memory serves. Citrus peeks around the corner, as does a leaf of mint. Midpalate, the salt takes control.
The finish starts quite intense on ashes and liquorice, but then suddenly disappears leaving the mouth dry.
The better work of John Glaser, although I do prefer the 4th release. This is certainly worth 130 EUR.
- Personally, I enjoyed the 2012 and 2015 significantly more than this 2018 edition. I am quite fond of this blend, so I was somewhat disappointed in what I felt what a departure from the previous bottlings in terms of smell and taste. I dare say the sherry cask is more prominent to hide the more youthful exuberance of the younger Caol Ila and Clynelish in this batch. Also a big price increase in retail too this time around...booo
- This is incredible well made. I adored the last flaming heart and this one is still just incredible. Better than most peated malts!
At first a gentle highlander, some candlewax and different kinds of fruit. But then, out of nothing this complex peated side emerges. Dry sausage, clay, very mineral and chalk. Smoked ham, pineapple
A coastal highlander, a gentle islay or a fierce islander? Why not something from everything. Smoked lemons, waxy notes, seasalt, apples both fresh and stewed. Mineral stones.
Dry ash and lots of campfire and wood. Warm, sweet and smoky. Also some liquorice.
- The inventor of whisky deserves a salute (lets take our barley, add water and wait 3 years!) - this provides a decent nod - alchemy through blending. Belting.
Like a fleece after a barbie - warm with a gentle smoke.
Honeyed smoke - well balanced.
I didn't want it to finish.
- Freshly opened bottle. Wonderful sherry + peat + wax. Just lovely and quaffable.

- Really nice smoke/peat. I’d have liked to taste more of the fruit I smelled. Even so, I really enjoyed this - it’s a real shame this isn’t part of their regular lineup. If they could source enough of the components to make it more regularly available (and priced more modestly) that would be a wonderful thing for people who like whisky, though I suppose there is something to the scarcity that might make it a bit more special.
Fruit on the pour. Smoky fruit, apple, green wood.
Peaty malt, some peppery feel.
Long but low-powered.
