A great Glenrothes away from the popular Dark Sherry Malts of recent years. He can come along, but he does not need water. Depending on your mood.
    • Nose
Intense nose, full, sweet yellow fruit, orange peel, creamy with vanilla, also neat oak spice, which advances from the background, wood, mint, a pinch of pepper, sometimes slightly greasy, cold cocoa, altogether through the mint and the orange note quite fresh , always on the border to the sour, after the first sip, the nose is creamier with attention to the vanilla, custard with tangerines or cheesecake with tangerines, yes that's even better
With water: The nose opens up a bit, it becomes much sweeter, the orange is now definitely sweetened tangerine, behind a bittersweet enamel
    • Taste
oily, sweet, honey, vanilla, direct wood, good oak load, also tart, spicy, a pinch of pepper, the orange is tart, more like orange peel, grapefruit, I think so must taste a nice old ex-bourbon whisky
With water: the basic structure remains the same, but it becomes more subtle, smoother, creamier, a little less oak, longer sweet and fruity, also beautiful, different beautiful
    • Finish
creamy, with vanilla, sweet, slightly tart still from the oak, shortly the pepper comes through again, very light fruit kernels, medium long
with water: also fruity, sweeter, clearly mandarin, still warming

Could have more depth for his age
    • Nose
Caramel, vanilla, honey, bitter orange, peanut butter
    • Taste
Sweet, waxy, bitter orange marmalade - after a longer life, the woodiness becomes clear
    • Finish
medium long, bitter wood notes, astringent

I like that. Very nice malt from the bourbon barrel. Surprisingly, he does not even have the typical musty, earthy Glenrothes notes that I like.
But he could be a bit deeper and more intense, considering the age. I would have estimated blind 10 years younger.
    • Nose
Acacia honey. In addition yellow fruits. Khaki. Physalis. Vanilla semolina pudding with oranges. White chocolate. Banana milk. Again and again a freshness. Herb drop. Some wood dust.
    • Taste
Pretty sweet at first. Sugar candy. Fudge. Peach ice tea. Cloudberry jam. Now comes more sour yellow gooseberries. Orange jam. Then the oak starts. It gets spicier and gradually drier.
    • Finish
Some of the fruits are still left. Indicated some wax. A little tree resin. Dry wood.

This one was part of a MOS tasting I had with my friends.
Wow, a 36y old dram from the good old days. Another great Glenrothes dram from an Independent Bottler. I tasted some pretty good Cadenhead expressions as well. Why doesn't Glenrothes bottle this quality that often by themselves?

This 36y old whisky is a typical dram which should last all evening, but in a lineup that is impossible. Pretty sure I will buy another sample and take my time to enjoy and write some tasting-notes.

Part of a MoS tasting I had with friends.
A 36 yo Glenrothes is not particularly a daily dram, so we all were quite exciting for this one! As often with Glenrothes, also this is not a dram to pour in and start sniffing and sipping immediately. It needs time. And that is rewarding.
    • Nose
A beautiful, long matured whisky Lots of sweetness and a fatty nose. The balance in this one is outstanding with lots of well matured layers. Smells that remind me of a dessert after dining in a restaurant. Strawberry ice cream with whipped cream, honey and caramel. This dram is rather shy and closed at first. As with many long matured whiskies, this needs time. So pour it in, sit back and relaxt. After 30 minutes or so, this dram becomes so complete, well balanced and rich.
    • Taste
Sweet and a tad sour. Sweet and a tad sour. Loads of fruits and a hint of pepper. After 36 years in a cask also the taste needs time. Initially it is a bit sharp, biting and out of balance. After letting it breach, the balance returns and it becomes very harmonious.
    • Finish
Once ready to drink this finish is a real treat! The long finish brings me sweet and gentle spices with hints of antique wood and leather.

Nice old Glenrothes, a true gentleman’s dram where one should spend serious time with. The aroma’s are very evolved and adult. It gives sweet orange marmalade, sweet hard strawberry candy, full fat whipcream and vanilla ice with old wood spices. This whisky has a very oily texture and pleasant mouthfeel.

Oh. A completely clean Glenrothes without the slightest dirty notes. I am horrified! ;-))

Nice nuanced nose, in the mouth then unfortunately not quite at this level.
It lacks complexity and there is - for my taste buds - a little too much peppery.
    • Nose
      90 90
Very ripe, ripe apples, fine sherry notes, refined sugar, dried apricots. Geraniums in the background. Briefly also a hint of Pritt-Stift-Kleber. Tangerine. Pine resin.

With water: elegant, subtle and multi-layered, fruity and with a clear fragrant floral note. Significantly deeper.
Water is definitely good for his nose.
    • Taste
      88 88
Full, soft start, but then quickly becomes peppery-hot. Behind it yellow fruits and a little solvent.
      Full and focused.

      With water:
silky, the peppery notes decrease and it becomes more balanced. Herbs, nuts, solvents, dried fruits.
But be careful: it only tolerates little water, otherwise it quickly loses volume.
    • Finish
      88 88
Dried apricots, apple compote, a little hot. Again a little solvent. Good length. Ends slightly (oak) bitter.

      With water:
      round and balanced, fruity.

It looks really old for me in the best sense - wonderful maturation, super texture, very high quality, perfectly interwoven

do I need a bottle? - mhh is expensive and a little one-dimensional taste spectrum - he can really do it very well
    • Nose
      91 91
Remnants of matchstick sulfur - slightly musty, heavy orange notes of fruit, peel and very intense orange oil, cooked apples with cinnamon, fine furniture wood notes - furniture polish, icing sugar, honey, sweet blossom bud
    • Taste
      91 91
very noble multi-layered orange notes, mint, very creamy, nutmeg, black tea, cocoa powder, roasted nuts, seasoned oak - wonderfully sweet, vibrant, jasmine flowers - perfect, very good to enjoy without water
    • Finish
      89 89
rather short in terms of age - consistently continues the palate - warm and chocolaty
