Not a big sherry impact here, clearly all refill. Not very complex either, but it does have a really nice balance and a lot of taste which makes this a dram that I can keep pouring all evening without boring me. When comparing it to the Svein, Valkyrie and Dragon Legend, it really stands out how much more aromatic this one is. Especially in comparison to the first two.
    • Nose
      85 85
Right away that typical NAS HP nose, mixing that particular light peat with a vanilla cookie-like maltiness. Also a really present fruitiness of apple, yellow raisin and peach.
    • Taste
      86 86
The peat is slightly more present, but still balanced by those vanilla cookies and a considerable amount of apple.
    • Finish
      86 86
The peat becomes more liquorice-like and even more in the foreground, with that maltiness behind it.

The second in a series created in collaboration with Danish designer Jim Lyngvild. Highland Park Valknut was created from the idea of combining a rare Orkney barley called Tartan with sherry casks straight from the USA.

To fully discover what it has to offer, Irecommend tasting with the addition of water. Do not overdo it with its amount, literally three drops are enough to make the accents of mowed grass and tobacco even more noticeable to the palate.
    • Nose
      Fruit, light smoke, hay, mowed grass and honey;
    • Taste
Fruit, pepper and grass clippings, fire ash, mint, black pepper and cinnamon
    • Finish

The aroma is simple, you can hear the grain, wine tones (closer to white), no peat, which is a pity, simple for me
After standing, malt and honey appeared

    Alcohol: 46.8%
Aroma: Salty, smoky, a little used smell. Rich, marine impression, at the same time fresh. (88 b)
Taste: Quite dry, with vanilla, malt, unfortunately a little bitter at the end. (83 b)
    Points: 85/100
Summary: A shot at WF2021 in Malá Morávka. For me, a big disparity between a great aroma and a weaker taste.

  21. Don Cassi scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

Very fleshy on the nose. Behind it ripe banana and sour notes (vinegar?). Possibly a subtle trail of smoke. I also imagine Mediterranean herbs (thyme?). With the addition of water, an association with liquorice and a little gingerbread.

Peppery-spicy and somewhat fruity in the mouth. Behind it a slight ashy note. Maybe a little too thin. Somewhat better and fruity with water.

In the finish, then clearly cold ash, behind some fruit. Above this, an espresso note forms with and with, which covers everything else. More fruit again with water.
    Length: 5/10

Quite nice but for me it is too fleshy in the nose and too thin in the mouth. In addition, I find neither HP typical notes of heather or honey nor typical sherry fruits or chocolate. Can be done, does not have to be.

Edit: after adding water and standing for a while (approx. 45min), the fleshy notes of the nose and soft fruity aromas vanish. The mouthfeel and finish also seem fuller and more chocolaty to me. So I'm adjusting the rating upwards.

    Grade: 2+

Highland Park Valknut (46.8%). Quite a dark golden. Aroma is maple syrup, golden syrup, slightly papery but mostly impressions of sweetness, some lemon and honeyed biscuit. Quite interesting. Taste is soft and easy, light biscuity vibes, softest building peat, some complex floral salty biscuity vibes run into one another, faint burnt salted citrus. This interesting atypical flavour may be coming from sherry seasoned American oak - I am certainly not tasting typical 'sherry' flavours though. Over time there's a richer toffee note. Even as a peatier HP it's not that peaty. This is not bad at all. One of the most complex and well balanced HPs I've tried recently, and it has a unique flavour profile. Certainly doesn't taste young despite the lack of an age statement. Fun to try. 3.5/84

Aroma: honey-citrus, creamy caramel, vanilla, malt, pastry baked goods, a little salt and sour green apple. Light smoke, smoked dried fruits (dates, figs), fragrant hay.

Taste: bright, moderately sweet, distinctly white pepper, ground ginger, dried fruit compote, burnt bread crust, soot, figs and dates in the background.

Finish: pepper-dried fruit, oak, spice, orange peel, mineral-salty, a little burnt, medium length.

    Score: 85

Bottom line: Full bodied, peppery, more phenolic than the standard line, it feels good. In general, a good release, a small nuance, when the bottle was just opened in the aroma, a little mash was a little strained, but it was soon gone.

Quite complex on the nose: a lot of fruit and spice that complement each other well. Also relatively complex in taste.
I really like this malt, even if the finish is quite dry.
Tip: it needs a little time and air to open.
[85 - 81 = delicious --- get a second bottle if price is within the range]
    • Nose
      86 86
very light ashy smoke with a hint of heather, which gets a little stronger over time.
Behind it a sweet seasoning opens: sweetness of an orange, honey, caramel, vanilla, brown sugar and juicy, red apple and peach; Seasoning of cinnamon, cloves and sandalwood.
In addition red / dark dried fruits, raisins. Over time, a slightly floral component is added.
Hint of a mineral note - but I have to concentrate very much on it.
    • Taste
      86 86
soft start and the typical HP heather note is there. A little more smoke comes through and the (oak) wort presses harder on the tongue.
It gets dry very quickly after the first sip.
Second sip: significantly sweeter and the fruits come through well. Vanilla becomes a little clearer to hear.
A little liquorice is added, but in my opinion it enhances it because it adds an aroma.
It gets a bit tart (dark chocolate with a higher cocoa content), but doesn't turn into a bitterness.
    • Finish
      82 82
the smoke remains somewhat in the mouth and turns into peat smoke. Dryness sets in and oak tannins cover the tongue; The wort persists for a medium to long time.
A peppery flavor stays on the tongue even longer.

NOSE: Sweet cedar wood, dried fruits, typical sherry cask notes. Also hints of smoke and sulphur. Later bourbon cask like notes appear; hints of vanilla and dried banana. (86-87p).
TASTE:  The arrival is quite soft, with a touch of sweetness. Then dried fruits, then some (mild) wood tannins. Not very complex but quite nice nonetheless. (87p).
EXIT: Sweetness, mild tannins, a slight bitter touch, mild pepper. Medium long aftertaste. (86-87p).
OVERALL: Could this be a bourbon matured malt, finished in a refill sherry cask? Or a mix of bourbon and refill sherry cask matured malts? TOTAL SCORE 86 (87) points.

Great day to day drinking whisky. Nose and tasting palet remind me of the Nord Sea. Peat with vanilla sweetness and some butter (cookies). Great body and good balance. Some saltiness hidden which gives the whole a hint of seaweeds beautifully combined with peach (I taste peach). Great finish, long and intense, but a bit dusty with some gin-like elements. Great drink, not very special or complex, but very nice.

    Scandinavian Stones

The Highland Park Valknut is the second whisky in the Viking Legend series, with a design by Danish designer Jim Lyngvild. The Valknut, the symbol on the label, consists of three triangles that flow into each other, as can often be seen on old Scandinavian stones. It refers to the god Odin. It is said that this HP is more smoky than the standard releases.

The nose is quite coastal, but I would not really call it smoky. It’s a good nose, don’t get me wrong. Very clean and sweet on vanilla, yellow apples and peach with a hint of sultanas and flowery honey. Heather and even a touch of smoked salmon. Nice.

The body is fine, almost creamy. Lots of vanilla and apples before some maritime notes and peat appear. Yes, it becomes pretty smoky now. Good balance. Seaweeds and peach go hand in hand. This is very pleasant and quaffable.

The finish is long, on sweet malt and liquorice, with a smoky touch and a bit of zest from pink grapefruit at the death.

While not overly complex, this is more outspoken than the recently tasted Dragon Legend. Around 65 EUR. Thanks for the sample, Manny.

very nice NAS bottling from HP, a well balanced rather easy sipper, HP seem to be back on track with this one after some pretty mediocre releases in the recent past
    • Nose
      86 86
peaty and fruity (red fruit, ripe apples and pears), with nuts, a bit of hay and heather signature HP (although rather shy)
    • Taste
      85 85
dryer than the nose, less peaty and more fruity, after adding water the things I picked up in the nose return.
    • Finish
      83 83
medium long, soft, dry and nutty

Nice expression from HP, I liked it more than Valkyrie. Feeling quite young on the nose but without those ugly fusel notes. The palate is really good and enjoyable. The strength is also perfect. Can be a good everyday dram but maybe a bit too expensive for that.
    • Nose
Fresh, grassy, malt, green apples and pears, sweet notes (fudge) and sour ones on a bit bitter side (lemon and grapefruit peel), hints of smoke, light minerality on the background (wet chalk)
    • Taste
Sweet and slightly salty, spicy (peppers, ginger, some nutmeg), minerally notes, coastal motives, caramel, walnuts, background smoke
    • Finish
Rather long, nutty, leather notes, slightly sweet and salty, ashy at the end

I really like this one, it is almost a gentle version of the Talisker 10.

For me best of the Viking Legend series with a great balance. 85/86.

Oily. Vanilla, peat and smoke. Salt and citruses, peach. Spicy oak. Ginger and some pepper.

      Medium length, creamy, peaty, smoky.

Simple but does the job. Can’t complain.
    • Nose
Sea breeze, fresh and clean. With time raw cookie dough with vanilla chips. With time a soft touch of raisin comes in.
    • Taste
Vanilla sweetness, the classic HP heather smoke creeping in. With time a maritime presence starts to sneak in.
    • Finish
Hint of coal smoke and some burnt wood. Creamy vanilla long finish.

Very fresh at first. Juicy citrus, tart acidity, only a hint of sherry richness in the background. Having read that this had been mainly matured in American-oak sherry casks, I was expecting an emphasis on first-fill sherry (to mask younger flavors) and and soft vanilla, but to be honest, this noses more like Bourbon maturation with a few sherry casks in the mix. Not in any way substantial way richer or better than the Valkyrie, I'd say, except for a higher smoke quotient. Actually, with the Valkyrie, you could still detect the influence of older casks, whereas here the sum of its parts comes off as rather young overall.

After some time in the glass, a leathery note emerges along with the hallmark Highland Park smoke, but the famous heather honey and my much-cherished herbal forest-floor aromas are sorely missing. The peat smoke aromas are especially young and are missing the typical HP complexity that emerges with longer maturation. Pity, that.

In the mouth, things improve substantially. Good mouthfeel, decent attack, nice sweetness. The leathery note from the nose returns. The mid-palate is especially good; there's a moment when the full Highland Park richness kicks in, like a small crescendo. Not a very long experience though, and not a particularly pronounced finish, but the smoke makes it linger for a good while. More bitterness all around than I would've expected from American oak.

In all fairness, the nose improves a bit after the first sips have gone down. Still comes across as young, but pleasant altogether. In sum, this is easy drinking HP, okay as a session dram, but nothing to spend a lot of time on in deep, solitary concentration. The similarly priced "Dark Origins" was waaaayyyy better.

More peat and smoke and in particular more on this maritime and medicinal type, not typical HP but more like one of the recent younger Bowmores - overall really not bad
    • Nose
      86 86
Sea breeze, iodine, medicinal peat and smoke, smoked salmon, honeydew, citrus fruits, lemony - very good
    • Taste
      85 85
Oily, salty, seaweed, subtle sweetness, peaches and pears, just little peat and smoke compared to the nose - not bad
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium long, warm, zesty, more on grapefruits
