Whisky Reviews for Orkney Islands 1999 BR

4 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 87.33 points

  1. DocF scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

    Color: pale gold.

Weak nose, for a more interesting finish. To sip on the balcony in cold weather.
    • Nose
Behavior. Needs water and plenty of time, the refill butt is more evident than the 16-year-old. Wild garlic. Earthier after half an hour.
    • Taste
Does not need water, but tolerates a lot. Voluminous and still ashier than the sister bottling. With more chewing sweet, dominant summer honey, completely blown ash from the day before.
    • Finish
Exceptionally long for 18 years. Dry pine needles, acacia honey, cold soot and dry earth. Clearer tannins, not too bitter.

  2. Totoro scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

A slow starter with a somewhat underwhelming nose, but in the end it proves itself as an extremely solid and natural HP.

Very smoky for an eighteen-year-old HP. Seems initially more like an ex-bourbon-cask-matured bottling. Then some rubber and mushy strawberries hint at the sherry. Solid refill stuff but nothing extraordinary. However, if you add water, this really goes up a notch or two.
86 points initially; 87-88 with water + time.

More impressive on the tongue. Tasty! A good deal of sweetness, with herbal honey, strawberry custard and fragrant peat. Pretty drinkable at cask strength, but a teaspoon of water actually stretches everything out and helps to differentiate the individual stages of the flavor development. Goes from sour fruit to honeyed sweetness to darker coal smoke aromas. Pretty good, but the finish is the high point.

Deep roast aromas, charcoal, barbecue, savory smoke. Still very sweet. Better with water!
