Both Glen Moray and the bottler SMWS are two stories that I had criminally neglected so far - this bottling shows me that clearly! If I've become somewhat skeptical about "modern" sherry casks in recent years (for good reason), this one is a real bomb, and completely without the otherwise rather unpleasant "side aromas" of similar bottlings. My impression is that this one is incredibly complete - enormously complex expressions in many directions: sweet, dark fruity, nutty, tobacco leaves, dark chocolate with coffee bean splinters, leathery, great roasted aromas; and all complex and well integrated; excellently drinkable with and without water, without the typical off-notes of modern sherry finishes. It can keep up with some Glendronach single casks from the 90s. Glen Moray has just moved up significantly in my rather unconscious distillery ranking - and I have to take care of SMWS more anyway... Many thanks to Dorothee Hoffmann for the sample!

A very good Glen Moray (from their SMWS golden era IMO), with clear notes of juicy figs and gummy sweets, as well as plenty of dark chocolate and red wine/sherry notes!

    (N = Neat, W = With water)
    • Nose
N: Strong dark chocolate with dried fruits - apricots and a little bit of date, fresh leather scent as well as plenty of sherry notes.

W: Becomes more leather bound and old books, lots of dried fruit and sherry notes, as well as dark chocolate.
    • Taste
N: Very sweet, almost dessert wine, with strong red wine or light sherry notes and more dried fruits, with fresh gummy sweets.

W: More dark chocolate, dark plums - the whole whisky becomes quite dark actually! Very good quality, takes a couple of drops of water well (but as SMWS says, it really isn't necessary!).
    • Finish
N: Sweet spices and lingering into light sulphur (the good kind).

W: Same as above, but just a little less intense, with some light malted barley notes coming out.

Needs some water. I liked this one. It's bold and aggressive

Dark chocolate, figs, ripe red fruit, leather, musty oak, some mint,

Rather thin in the mouth, but still quite a strong taste. Ripe red fruit, figs, then wet oak, some mint
    • Finish

Medium long, only slightly drying and only slightly bitter. A grenadine-like red fruit covers the mouth with some tingling mint and covered in old, used leather. Oak notes come in waves.

Notes from the SMWS website: https://www.smws.com/juicy-figs-and-percy-pigs

The nose wafts a bouquet of fruit tea, Percy Pigs, thick-cut marmalade and marrons glacés, with rum-soaked prunes, Armagnac and hints of leather and waxed jackets. The palate is a sumptuous feast of juicy figs, spiced plums and chocolate sauce over raspberries; we also found lebkuchen and peppery black bun. Adding water (completely unnecessary) produced aromas of toffee apple, marzipan, plum tart and pumpernickel. The palate is a rapturous balance of fruit (raspberry, cassis) and earthier flavours of dark chocolate, root beer and parsnip and beetroot crisps. After 15 years in an Oloroso butt we transferred this to a new oak puncheon.
