I'm not the biggest fan of the burnished note I detected on the nose. The finish also isn't completely up to par, and yet, I doubt anyone'll be disappointed by this dram. Excellent value for money, and full of flavour, this'll stand up to most others in its price bracket.
    • Nose
A pretty big hit of burnt caramel, followed by cherry syrup, cinnamon buns and red apple parts. Slightly grassy, highlighted by notes of straw, but there's some damp wood, rose petals and marzipan here as well.
    • Taste
Nice syrupy mouthfeel. Flavours of plums, dates and other dried fruits, as well as hints of orange zest and gun powder. Some soft spices as well, mainly cinnamon.
    • Finish
      Surprisingly short.

  2. RobbievdB scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

A fine blend for a good price. Cherry, oranges and baked apples, loads of caramel, something umami like a sweet soy sauce, cinnamon. Easy drinkable.

  3. rottendon scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Very tasty and quite ripe, I suspect either the old bone or, more likely, the blend. Very smooth, too smooth for a single malt. However, the grain content must be extremely low, because nothing comes across.
I would rate it at around 43-45%.

Notes from a blind online chat tasting.

Look, so blend and old bag, how misleading ...
I thought of Cadenhead, or something from the Compass Box.
    • Nose
      89 89
Lower fruity notes, significantly darker, some brandy. Also closed. Very full, sweet, but dark. The sweetness disappears quickly, but it looks extremely soft. Buttery. There is also something fruity, but I really don't get that defined. I don't have sulfur. I have cough syrup, roasted aromas, braised mushrooms. Somehow sherry too. Forest floor fits! I have no more fruit now, just burnt caramel and a lot of barrel. But it looks extremely delicious. Is absolute nasal, I could bathe in it!
    • Taste
      86 86
Sweeter than you might expect, but not exuberant, chocolate, menthol, oak, everything plays together nicely. In the second sip, Old Bottle flavor. Unexpectedly.
    • Finish
      84 84
The finish goes very quickly and is a simple fading without surprises. Sweet coffee with cream.

    Marasquin
North Star Spirits, who have only been active since 2016, are quickly building up an ironclad reputation. Next to quite a few fantastic single casks bottlings (already 5 series so far) of both single malt and grain whisky, Ian Croucher has also launched quite a few blended malts, a Tennessee whiskey and even a fortified wine. Now he adds a blend that listens to the name Spica. This is the 16th brightest star in our heaven and part of Virgo. But I digress. All components, both malt and grain, have matured for at least 20 years on European and American oak.

Good nose. I get very sweet notes of toffee apples, peppernuts (a Dutch treat similar to gingerbread), maple syrup and a truckload of mildly burnt caramel. Some almonds and slighty rotted wood (no offnote!). It also offers up some rosewater and fresh hay, but all the way in the back. Having said that, this nose is led by the syrup of marasquin!

The arrival is quite syrupy. Good body and immediately somewhat spicy. Cinnamon, liquorice, nutmeg. The fruity quickly turns dark: dades, blue grapes, plums. A bloodorange. Becomes slightly drying towards the end.

While the finish could have been longer in my opinion, it is satisfying and sweet.

A liquid dessert, I say. And I do feel the part malt whisky is rather high. Unfortunately not easy to find anymore. Thanks for the sample, Marcel.

My first properly aged blend, so it was an eye opener on many levels. This bottle has now been open for more than 3 years and its about time to finish it off. I remember finding it rather angular and not that pleasant when I first opened it, which is probably why it has been sitting around this long. This particular bottle was acquired for less than 60€ which is very fair.
    • Nose
      88 88
Sweet fruity notes on grapes, ripe oranges, ripe banana, black currant and gooseberry compote. Yeasty bread fresh from the oven, light honey, and then orange juice, freshly pressed. Then back on some vegetable oils and crushed anise seed. This is a lovely nose. Back when the bottle was first opened the nose was probably 82, but now its more like 88. Sounds a little absurd, but there has really been some opening up and relaxing of this juice over the years.
    • Taste
      86 86
Straight away, lemon and orange juices, a tingling citrus that gives way to a yeasty grainy bread with some heather honey that fades into some astringent oaky "tired sherry" bitterness. Not terribly unpleasant, but not the fruit bomb that the nose promised either
    • Finish
      84 84
Spicy and peppery fade medium in length. Lets the nose down somewhat.

    • Taste
Honey, strawberries, a little lemon, coffee, chocolate
    • Finish
The stuff is extremely drinkable and you have to drink it in big gulps so that you can get something of the taste. A very dangerous combination

  18. EnjoyLife89 scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

    • Nose
      Deep, dark sherry; Dried fruit; molasses sweetness; minimal adhesive note in the background; light nut; strong flavor from the wood; slightly buttery; now and then a light nut could flash through; now and then I also have a hint of citrus;
    • Taste
Spicy; light leather; Tobacco; Dried fruit; slightly bitter; delicate seasoning; could be some cinnamon; the delicate tart note is repeatedly driven away by a sweet flash. Could be an easy nut to crack; but only subtly and briefly.
    • Finish
      Fruit; Citrus; becoming slightly tart; nice seasoning; light fruit;

  19. PuddingmitHaut did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

dark, covered, sweet with fruit alternating with tart notes, leather, tobacco, subtle mildew, herbs, with time less sweetness, tendency to toasty aromas
    • Taste
here directly the roasted aromas, cappuccino, dark fruits, herbs, cappuccino cream candy,
    • Finish
tasty, but doesn't stay too long

It is a well composed blend, no doubt, however, I am not sure about the quality of the ingredients. The sherried malt comes from a good cask, but is pretty much all about the wood. No clue about its spirit’s heritage, which robs it (IMHO) of any further complexity. The pine cone aftertaste is not one of my favourites, but this could also be due to the grain component. For the rest, it is very smooth and I imagine one could drink this very well as a starter of a tasting.
    • Nose
      84 84
We some clearly sherry-matured whisky here, most likely from casks that previously held Oloroso sherry. Sweet, towards liquor-like fluid, with lots of soft fudge. It is reasonably balanced without the bitter notes that I often notice in heavily sherried whiskies, and not that influence noticeable from the grain either. Now I get hazelnut cream, lots of it, with the expected raisins. It is pleasant, smooth and friendly, no doubt, but is also lacking some complexity. No water needed, the strength is prefect. In the end perhaps some grain influence can be found, but otherwise it is mostly malt forward. Also pretty much cask forward. After while the wood becomes much more pronounced, with something that I can only describe as pine tree air refresher. The finish is dryish, sweetish, with muscovado sugar, and slightly alcoholic with a slightly chemical off-note. Otherwise, pretty fine.
    • Taste
      84 84
A clear sense of soft wood and rum-soaked raisins made into some kind of liquor. It is pretty sweetish, again smooth, and has got lots of hazelnut cream. Add to that some bitter almonds, a softish note of old leather, pine cones, and sherry wood. Water pronounces the wood, and brings forward the nutmeg, coconut, and cardamon in the aftertaste. Dry with a good balance between sweet and spicy, but also a pine-y aftertaste, and again that sense of air refresher.
    • Finish
      83 83
      Dry and pine-y.

Strange whisky this is, with some unusual aroma's and tastes. But still pretty enjoyable, fun to have tasted this one.
    • Nose

Typical aroma's immediately, like hanging above a jar of apple syrup. Also chocolate, coffee, caramel. Some autumn wood, applepie too. But most of all: apple syrup...
    • Taste
      84 84
Again this apple syrup, spicy, some peppers. Petty full taste, nuts, caramel and some raisins.
    • Finish
      84 84
Still pungent, apple syrup, some wood influence. Now some sweet too, licorice. Pretty long, tobacco.
