  1. Totoro scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Insane complexity for a 12-year-old on the nose.
    • Nose
      89 89
Young and yeasty, but also a prime example of the trademark HP style, full of honey, heather, and mild, harmonious smoke. But there's more: apricot, wet burlap, buttered sourdough bread, olive oil, rosemary, limestone, petrichor, lemon and orange juice.
    • Taste
      85 85
Powerfully punchy at close to sixty percent, but perfectly potable with water. Sweet, sour, and softly herbal, with some good-quality, well-balanced ex-bourbon oak influence. Less smoky than on the nose, and simpler as well.
    • Finish
      83 83
More down-to-earth after the death. Still a sweet-and-sour balancing act with big wafts of (now returning) smoke, but the high strength and young age curtail the finish and leave a noticeable alcoholic burn, even when properly diluted.

    ***
    ????: white wine,
????: scrawny, wax-varnish, light "virgin" atmosphere, sweet-floral, volatile, windy, you can still feel youth,
????: even quite delicate, peppery, tasty, sweet-dry, oily, developing, interesting!
????: long, lingering in the mouth, not in the esophagus, slightly acidic,
    *
The nose gave the impression of a total fresh, although the waxiness and peppery sounded very nicely here ... and here on the tongue such a pleasant surprise, bravo! Pretty cool whisky! Apart from a little irritating nose, it's more than OK!

Quite a good malt. However, it still looks relatively fresh. The relatively young bourbon barrel notes together with the moderate Highland Park Rauch and a certain wood spice.

Okay. But not for me either.

    comparing three 12yo ex-bourbon orkneys from 2006/2007/2008
    - Chorlton 12yo 62.9%
    - NSS 2006 57.8%
    - NSS 2007 55.5%

This one is a bit different from the others, with a bit more sweetness and more savoury cask notes (I wonder if these come from a particular bourbon distillery, sometimes notice them in other ex-bourbon malts). I prefer the slightly drier ones, but this is very good too.
    • Nose
more wet hessian than the 55.5% NSS 2007, though it's restrained. lots of seaweed, whelks. sweetest of the three, with a dash of rum n raisin ice cream, fruity comté, and, well, heather honey.
    • Taste
water please... noticeably sweeter than the 55.5 on the arrival, more active cask -- more honeyed, then truffle oil indeed (which I'm not a fan of here), lemon water, more sea spray, a little green tomatoes (ethylene), smoked grist and bags of chalk in the finish.

Have you got the braveoury to get in the longboat as it heads out into the unknown?
This Viking may not bring you all the way to Vinland, but he will for sure take you along to Valhall. And if you fall asleep with the glass in your hand, you will wake to drink another day and without question do it all over again.
    • Nose
      89 89
Light, surprisingly light given the ABV.
      Sweet, honey, barley, dry hay.
      Light clean smoke.
Not much citrus, but I can swear that somewhere down there is at least half a banana, which is unusual for HP.
      Citrus emerges with water.
    • Taste
      93 93
You might say creamy, but it arrives with a viscousity closer to youghurt. Thick, massive, immediately spicy, there's absolutely nothing timid about it, this is a Viking.
Compaired to the average HP it is smokier, saltier, everything -ier.
This is not just down to ABV, as it is more mature and complex than any of the CS NAS releases.
With water it stays quite oily, but the spice is brought down several notches though.
    • Finish
      90 90
      Prolonged warm spices, lightly drying.
Water calms it, removes what was of dryness, but it remains oily fat and sticks to the cheaks. This is where you notice why un-chill filtered matter.

Carries the Brennereicharakter clearly in the Viking beard - very nice!
    • Nose

Yes, this is a 12-year-old Highland Park, the Viking ship is just starting in the storm, on board a half-extinguished fire basket. But where the hell did the peach-pepper mix come from?
    • Taste
      87 87
Nice strong spice, peat, rusty ax, a rest sweet mead, wet pebble beach, ripe lemon against scurvy :)
    • Finish
      86 86
Sweet-sour, very smooth despite the power - well integrated alcohol, impressive Nordmann.

Initial nose: Intense caramel at first this gradually mingles into toffee smoke – caol ila ish, drier earthy background note develops – this too unfolds with slightly sharper fruity perfume – polish.
It all really comes together on the palette. Intense – Highland Park! Sweet/ dry/ touch of bitter and smoked salt – quite a bit heat from the alcohol.
Going back to the nose – pinch of sulphur, the most delightful peat – now suggesting Christmas cake as it begins to brown and darken at the edges. The initial sweet caramel disappears and melts into the softest peat smoke. Slight hints of paraffin oil? Citrus pith? There’s a richness well beyond its 12yrs. Also hiding away are some touches of oak spice, suggesting perhaps the refill cask was prepared by a good re-charring? Also there quite a bit a colour given up by the cask. On my first tasting (fresh opened bottle) I picked up citrus and distinct pear notes. It’s medium length finish in my opinion.
My only previous HP tastings are the standard 12’s. The similarities are there but this one is on steroids! And really show cases just how good Orkney peating can be. In the same way single malts are used to flavour grains in Blended Whisky I can see how these kinds of cask could be used to beef up entry level and NAS HPs.

Colour: light gold. Nose: raw, gristy, fresh barley! The kind of aroma that comes when strolling through a working distillery - lots of hay, straw, fermenting wash, hot underbacks, salted butter, salted caramel, ointments, clay, wet beach pebbles and hessian. In time it becomes more honeyed, with notes of heather ale, a glimmer of this very particular Orcadian herbal peat and some taramasalata. With water: chalk, butter, limestone, bath salts, burnt kelp, fresh linen and bonfire ash. Some green peppercorns in brine and a lick of mercurochrome as well. Mouth: wonderfully thick, oily and saline. Some petrol scented aged riesling, peat embers, soot, sea water, salted lemons, a hint of truffle oil and caraway. With water: lots of olive oil, smoked cereals, lemon barley water, lime oil, natural tar and sardines. Also quite a few dried herbs. Finish: long, softly ashy, herbal, lemony, slightly waxy and with various oils and black olives. Comments: Yet another top notch, thrillingly naked HP. Wonderful distillate.
