A lovely Laphroaig, probably bottled around the beginning of the 1980's. Has nothing to do with the current (weak and even bland) expressions of Laphoaig.
    • Nose
Ah, old skool Laphroaig! Lots of fruity notes of pear and yellow apple. Melon and mango as well. Not as 'tropical' as other older versions I had before, but still really good. Gentle smoke at the background, but also hints of honey and lavender. Cigar boxes. Very complex.
    • Taste
Lovely balance of spicy peatiness and soft cedar oakiness. Sweetness of cinnamon intermingled with ginger and cloves. Carraway. Some citrussy notes of grapefruit, lemon and lime. Peel zest. Delicious.
    • Finish
Quite long. Black pepper. Liquorice. Saltiness at the end.

A younger Islay tasting tonight but 10-15 years of age from days gone by, tasted in this order:-  https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/12324/ardbeg-10-year-old-guaranteed  https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/38654/lagavulin-12-year-old-pure-islay-malt  https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/9829/bowmore-15-year-old  https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/17442/caol-ila-15-year-old  https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/11524/laphroaig-15-year-old

The Lagavulin knocked the Ardbeg out cold taste wise

This is where I would put them but there is little between the Caol Ila, Lagavulin and laphroaig.

    1 - Caol Ila

    2 - Lagavulin

    3 - Laphroaig

    4 - Bowmore

    5 - Ardbeg

The caol Ila has the best nose, the Lagavulin just shades things on the palate but overall the Caol Ila wins as the nose is so good. The Laphy is a solid third.

The Bowmore had a nice nose but lacked power, the old Ardbeg was found wanting against such stiff competition but still a decent dram.

The screwcap and the cork are different Cinzano releases, the cap 1985 and the cork 1986. Both make it pre-refurbishment Laphroaig, since in 1972, new and bigger stills were added, changing the character of the whisky.
We should specify here what version was tasted, the screwcap or the cork (the latter sometimes gets higher ratings).

Smell: smelly feet and smelly socks, Sao, minerals, lemon juice, slight hospital smell, high-class sense, tropical fruit basket, yellow peach, cantaloupe, passion fruit, Sao.

Drink: Full of fat, salty aroma, beans, bitter herbs, end rhyme, rich tropical comprehensive juice.

The faint black numbers on the right bottom of the front label indicate its bottling year. The one I tried was bottled in 1986, said to be one of the better versions of the legendary big red.

2nd tasting from another sample that is basically good - no more soapy notes that I tasted with the first one

Yellow fruits, honeydew, green fruits, vegetables, little leafy, littel herbal, whiffs of smoke - not bad

Lots of old cedarwood, pepper, little herbal, rather austere but with little sweetness, little smoky, little yellow fruits, apple, peach - really not bad
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium long, warm, more woody, spicy
