Again such a "special Bunnahabhain" from Wemyss. The nose is really outstanding and also tropical-fruity, on the palate and on the finish dominates the herbaceous spiciness. Age manifests itself in the fact that everything looks very dense and harmonious. For me an intense-fine-fruity 91-point pleasure.

As already indicated in the name, the Bourbonese grape notes are actually joined by an intense kiwi aroma, some mandarin and lavender. Later, a little salt and herbs and spices. A very seductive Bunnahabhain.
    • Taste
      91 91
On the palate then the spice: oak, a little saltiness, even delicate smoke I hear; The Bourbon casserole fruits are now presented in the classic way in the form of grape fruit notes. Intense, the 46% fit well.
    • Finish
      90 90
In the finish is also the spice in the foreground: oak, herbs (slightly salted), followed by a few grapes. Pleasant and round.

An incredibly good malt. Absolutely round and in an excellent cask. Nose and taste almost perfect. Possibly a bit too tasty for even higher points. If you have the opportunity, you should test it.

The name was once again very well chosen by Wemyss. The malt smells like a fresh and fruity-sweet summer cocktail with an umbrella, sipped on the beach (on a tropical island, of course). On the tongue it was initially a bit too alcoholic-spicy for my taste. A few drops of water take away this sharpness and make it even more interesting.

    • Nose
Extremely fruity and sweet on the nose. A true cloud of fruit with an exotic fruit salad aroma rises. I find bananas, pineapples and canned peaches. Slightly sour citrus fruits and tangerines are also mixed in. A slightly cooling feeling that does not come directly from the alcohol is difficult to identify at first. After a few minutes it can then be clearly identified as mint, which together with the sweetness and citrus fruits creates a great mojito feeling. There is also a light caramel note and a hint of vanilla. The oak lingers faintly in the background.
    • Taste
On the tongue, it surprises me with a slightly sharp attack. Then the mint is immediately present, as well as the sweet fruits with tangerines, pineapple, peaches and citrus fruits. Matching the mojito feeling, I also think I can taste limes. This is joined by some caramel and buttery shortbread. With a few drops of water it is less spicy and even sweeter - you have to try it!
    • Finish
In the finish, the impressions initially remain largely unchanged. The mojito flavor with lime and mint just won't let me go. But the other fruits are only slowly declining. The oak becomes stronger and completes the long finish with its bittersweet influence. A light mint veil lies over it until the end.

The balance between the tropical fruit flavors and the well aged oak notes combined with this vanilla touch perfectly merge together in this Bunna. Really well done.

Very chic bunna with a noticeably long wood influence. Super balanced on the nose and clearly fruity, the taste then turns into a bitter taste. Could have used a bit more fruit, but it's a complaint at a high level. Old and elegant malt, which probably shouldn't have been lying down for much longer, otherwise the wood might have taken over. He lacks a bit of independence, but is still very successful.

A fruit sorbet and vanilla ice cream immediately come to mind. Juicy tropical fruits like pineapple and some mango, combined with tangy, fresh citrus fruits à la lemon, orange and a little grapefruit. The whole thing is balanced by an elegant tart, woody touch with dry herbs, very dry chocolate, nutmeg and a hint of cinnamon. You can even feel a really extremely delicate smoky note to some extent. After a while, it reminds me of a men's cream garnished with dry vanilla pods, chocolate pieces and fresh, sweet fruits. After the first sip, some old oak cabinets and wood polish come through. Delicious and very balanced!
    • Taste
      88 88
Now the bitter pages are taking shape. The island from the "Tropical Island Dram" comes through. It is a bit salty, with dried herbs, delicately tart wood and orange peel. The maritime character becomes clear, there is some coastal feeling. The wood looks minimally dusty, the sweet tropical fruits have moved into the background and give way to a bitter lemon note. Maybe some dry cocoa will show up here and there. Significantly more wood-based and more "island" than "tropics".
    • Finish
      89 89
This bunna runs down wonderfully elegant and soft, the herbal notes make a final statement and then finish off very gently with beautiful tart, woody notes, a little dry vanilla and a touch of dry chocolate. Here and there maybe one or the other fruit flashes through. Lasts a very long time.

Very tasty, tropical nose. The name really says it all.
    • Taste
      87 87
On the palate then the complete opposite of the nose. A good pinch of oak bitterness, herbs, fir forest and tree sap. Yes already going a bit bitter; not necessarily bad, but fundamentally different in contrast to the nose - but interesting ...
    • Finish
      88 88
The finish lasts for a medium length. The oak spice and tannins remain in the mouth. The tropical fruits in the nose are practically no longer present. An interesting malt, different, not for beginners.

Don't blow me now. I would have liked more fruit. So for me it is a bit dull and not very spectacular.
    • Nose
For me, more Iceland than tropical. A certain freshness. Mineral notes. Also fruits. For me, these are more citrus fruits. With time and a little hand warmth it becomes a little less mineral and a little mango and lychee complete the nose. Possibly some wax.
    • Taste
In the mouth a mixture of sweetness and spice. Sugar beet. Immature kiwi. Pear skin. Tree sap. Then the spice clearly has the upper hand. A certain sharpness arises and it tingles. Salivation, then becoming drier.
    • Finish
      Grapefruit. Hedge trimming. Herbal tea.

Wonderful start - as the name suggest: fresh tropical fruits, loads of them, namely passion fruit, banana, coconut. After a while, saw dust, pencil shavings, with some fragrant wood scent. Lemon appears too, after a sip. The mineral side appears after a few minutes. Very complex nose!
    • Taste
      87 87
Nice mouthfeel, thick and chewy. Slightly salty, olive oil, slightly bitter. The fruits are a little bit closed on the palate, not as loud as it suggests on the nose, but the texture is perfect.
    • Finish
      87 87
Dry, with almond nuttiness, bit of saltiness.

A very horny Bunna. Thanks to Winni for the sample. Actually that was a blindsample, but when I smelled it, I had to look directly, which is that =)
    • Nose
      93 93
The nose is immediately tropical and sweet going on, thick mango, then mandarin syrup, a lot of vanilla and an extremely balanced oak note
    • Taste
      89 89
Strongly sweet onset, without biting too much, the drinking strength fits here, lots of vanilla sweetness, pudding, creamy, maritime, some orange peel, slightly dry, with the time also neat oak
    • Finish
      90 90
Sweet and orange finish, very spicy, quite a lot of heat that lasts for a very long time

Aroma: first tart herbs, a bit mineral, then it becomes fruity, banana, apricot, apple, sweet, spices, marzipan, caramel, pastry, fruit tea

Taste: softly glides over the tongue, sweet, malty, oily, caramel / toffee, some mineral / maritime, pineapple, apricot, peach, honey

Finish: rather light spice for old age, salivation, herbs, slightly nutty, maritime, dry, a trace of beeswax stays long on the tongue

Impression: The Bourbon barrel delivers really beautiful exotic fruits, in combination with the somewhat mineral / maritime character of Bunnahabhain that fits really well, in addition, ripe and round. 89 points.

  24. dRambo scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

yes very nice - the nose is pleasantly fruity, but bothers me a tender Teignote / flour

On the palate, I feel it too sprittig with plenty of water. The aromas are well balanced - unfortunately it is too mineral for me.

  25. detachedblue scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Not as tropical as I imagined, however, a great old style whisky with huge ripe fruits, very sweet and balanced, a great performance/price ratio. Dangerously drinkable, very.
    • Nose
Very sweet, dried sour apples, fresh green apples, very waxy, a whiff of smoke, a hint of juicy pineapples, underneath some fresh grapefruits, old style! With water: more fruits!
    • Taste
Sweet and fruits, baked apple, sweet oranges, oily and smooth, milk chocolates, some fresh melon skins, the reduced ABV gave good mouthfeel.
    • Finish
Long, some soybean sauce, waxes, still some fruits

    • Nose
Filigree, relatively light. Garden herbs, water mint, dry branches. Grated lemon peel, salt, coconut flakes. Increasingly fruity with yellow apples and overripe banana. Chopped almonds and hazelnuts.
    • Taste
Slightly oily. Light honey, ripe pears, apricots, tangerines. White chocolate, coconut milk. Lemon cream with walnuts. A trace of smoky ashes.

    Conclusion and pictures on: https://tomtrinkt.de
    • Nose
"Tropical Island Dram" hits it perfectly. Wonderful, how harmonious and multifaceted the exotic fruit flavors rise after more than 26 years of maturity in a former Bourbon Hogshead from the glass. Lots of sugar sweet pineapple, juicy mangoes, freshly peeled mandarins, passion fruits, oranges and lemons are present. The intense fruit notes are accompanied by beautiful vanilla aromas, caramel sweets, honey, pastries, a hint of delicate herbal notes and elegant oak flavors. With a few (!) Drops of water, the fruity-sweet flavors intensify a little, the alcohol is thereby better integrated (46%). The nose is becoming increasingly harmonious and even more pleasing. Nice!
    • Taste
Strong and full-bodied onset, with a slight tingle on the tip of the tongue. The delicate Pfeffrigkeit gives way very fast to the extremely sweet, tropical fruits. The texture is very oily, especially with a few drops of water silky soft. Caution: Too much water (eg a teaspoon to 2cl) could easily dilute the Bunnahabhain. I only added 4-5 drops of water from my little pipette. The salivation is strongly stimulated. Pineapple, mango, coconut, passion fruit, limes and tangerines quickly take over the flavor of the upper hand. Sweet cake, honey, vanilla and caramel underline the sweet foundation. After the sweet and fruity freshness kick, light herb and mature oak notes attract attention. Black tea and a hint of dark chocolate follow. Again very diverse and harmonious. The alcohol content of 46% is perfectly integrated and ensures an intense aroma transport. Dangerously tasty, especially in the summer!
    • Finish
Medium to long, exotic-fruity and sweet-spicy. The exotic fruits can set a final exclamation point accompanied by floral hints. Herbs, mineral notes, a hint of dark chocolate and pleasant oak notes let the Bunnahabhain fade away slowly and harmoniously. On the palate remains a delicate bitterness.
