  1. Sleinn nam Ffoh scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Balanced, wonderfully pleasing - a strong bottling, which is absolutely expected both the vinous components and the distillate.
    • Nose
      90 90
Immediately sweet-fruity smoke is present, in addition to the ashiness, cherries and raspberries reach the nose. The alcohol is noticeable, but does not bother.
Slightly sourish draft and salty bacon are added. Maritime and complex.
    • Taste
      90 90
Very pleasant mouthfeel, with a tendency to creaminess. Cherries and raspberries are still the leading fruit flavors, the smoky notes and well-integrated alcohol accompany balanced. Slight pepper and spicy notes are present. Here rather tasty than complex.
With water, the fruits become clearer, the pepper and oak notes but also, if necessary, even slightly sulfuric subliminal palpable.
    • Finish
      89 89
At first, the smoky component predominates, but the red fruits are constantly mixed with it. Medium to long accompanied by subtle oak bitterness and a few dryness. Later blackberry.

Very good, the nose is way better than the palate. The palate is somewhat one dimensional more focused on peat but this balances with some time.
    • Nose
      90 90
Red fruits, plums, smoke, earthy, wood, fresh baked bread, sea, a damp warehouse, berries, jam, sausage. After some time in the glass it gets more mineral on stones and rocks and a bit nutty.
    • Taste
      88 88
Very fat, starts with ashes attack, an ashtray, smoked berries jam. After some time the fruitiness grows bigger and stands upfront.
    • Finish
      90 90
Long, spices, nutmeg, wet wood, sweetness, marmalade.

    • Taste

Immediately after pouring, smoke with a comparatively unique character pours out of the glass: Ashy wood smoke with both a pleasant intensity and a certain elegance. There are also heavy salty caramel, cocoa powder, lemon-pepper cake, apricot and maritime notes. Fantastic, only the alcohol could be used more cautiously.
    • Taste
      89 89
Spice cakes, light wood, juicy citrus fruits, charcoal, smoke, plums, creme brulee, candle wax, seaweed, iodine, freshly ground spices, oak.
    • Finish
      88 88
Always smoky, mostly spicy, often fruity and sometimes woody. The oak bitterness turns into delicate espresso notes and then subsides.

  30. PeatSnatch scored this whisky 92 points Expert Senior

What a wonderful Bunna Moine! The wine cask and heavily peated malt are in harmony and offer a unique experience.
Reminds me a bit of octomore wine cask at the opening of bottle but less at the end. Its smooth and soft yet heavy and dark... sweetness, big rich smoke, char, spices, saltiness and fruits all balanced while letting the peat smoke drive the show.

Edit 2022 after tasting a few recent editions
In retrospect, this has to be in my top 5 heavily peated malts. Never encoutered anything like that since (cracked and finished one in 2019) and I had many other Moine OB and from IB... some pretty good Ledaigs might do the trick but never in the same way as this one obviously.

Beautiful, strong bunnahabhain with a lot of smoke, a tad too dry for my personal taste, but nothing to complain about in itself.
    • Nose
Sweet red berries and campfire smoke come to mind first, raspberry, vanilla, almonds, tobacco, a little pepper, warmed it becomes even more spicy, a little cinnamon is added, waxy, cream cake, after a long smell, there is not much of the red berries left there and the creamy flavor dominated by smoke, creme brulée
    • Taste
Oily, creamy, dry ashy smoke, vanilla, cherry, sour, caramel, cinnamon, pepper, very creamy, spicy oak, slightly sweet at the beginning, then rather dry, a bit of dark chocolate, really dark, the smoke is actually rather heavily peated
    • Finish
the smoke dominates now, ashy, salt on the tip of the tongue, drier, apple, oak, warming and long-lasting

  37. gallfux did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

The barrel is not hiding and shows quite a bit of red fruit. The smoke goes in the direction of campfire smoke and barbecue. That actually seems quite consistent. The alcohol is also nicely integrated and the malt doesn't look too young. Strong but not bubbly. However, with the red fruits I always have a slightly artificial undertone that resonates and I don't like. But I did enjoy drinking the sample.

    • Nose
Cherry, cinnamon, somehow reminds me of chewing gum, honey, cold smoke, ash, from the nose I would never estimate it at 58%
The cherry is absolutely dominant here. So far I've only had something like this at a Mackmyra with cherry wine finish https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/98458/mackmyra-whiskyde
    • Taste
Honey, cherry, lime, lemon, clearly ash, wood, pepper

    • Taste
      88 88
Flattering peat smoke, campfire, tobacco notes, leathery, slightly dark red fruits, BBQ
    • Finish
      88 88
Long finish, full of warming peat smoke, tobacco notes, very chocolatey, slightly spicy

  40. LordBellamy scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

with water: it tolerates water properly, without which the nose does not change much, but then it breaks down in the mouth at some point, the smoke is tamed, but the wine is then overwhelmingly dominant. So gladly with water, but not too much

Conclusion: Bunnahabhain has once again whacked out a real board, a malt that works wonderfully, it is dirty and yet sweet, the berries together with the smoke and the iodine impacts just go well together, harmoniously and also a great deal of complexity
    • Nose
      90 90
sweet and fruity smoke, the typical "Bunna dirt" (mineral, some earth) is also there, but the smoke is not as succinct as expected, red berries (wild strawberry, blueberries), vanilla, creme brulee, caramel, nougat, creamy , the alcohol is very well integrated, also slight maritime notes like seaweed, iodine and salt can be found, the oak is also quite clear with strong spice
    • Taste
      89 89
strong, smoky approach, the smoke is much stronger here, the wine is there, but has to fight through the smoke first, the dram becomes sweeter and more berry in the mouth, nougat, salt, wood complete the whole thing
    • Finish
      88 88
long, pleasant, nice combination of smoke, minerality, red fruit and saucy notes, which together with the oak become stronger towards the end

    Copper. Medium legs.
Great nose. All meat. Salty bacon. Smoked salmon. Some cough syrup. Raspberries Cherries Black Forest cask. Some bunna nuttiness is there.
    Attractive spiciness. Pepper. Maritime.
Creamy mouthfeel. Getting most of the smells on the palate. Sweet ashy tar. Liquorice still spicy pepper on the palate. Salty bacon. Getting better after every dram.
    91/100.

While this isn’t bad by any means I was really hoping to like it more. Tart red cherries, smoke, pepper, brine, all the things sound good to me, but it just isn’t as appealing as it could be.
    • Nose
      88 88
Sour cherries, smoke, peat, must, cream,
    • Taste
      88 88

I tasted this whisky as part of the tasting of red wine finishes. It's a bomb. Whisky is really full, dense in both aroma and taste. Much obvious effect of red wine, in addition to spicy and smoky. Concert.
    • Nose
Some roses, very dense and heavy, charge! There are also some synthetics and earthy tones. It's all tinged with smoke and spicy spiciness.
    • Taste
The taste is again very dense, strong spicy spice, sharpness. Strong influence of red wine, wood soaked with red wine.

Organic peat smoke, quite vegetal. The smoke turns to rather earthy, with a nice nuttiness in the background. Japanese premium soy sauce, turkish delights, burnt sugar. Somehow I do not like heavily peated Bunna, it always seems to be incoherent.
    • Taste

The wine influence is very obvious, with rich sweetness. Some smokiess on the back of the throat, also very nutty.

Full on the nose with more Chinese soy sauce nuance, complexity shows with burning leaf and wood chip smokes, warm berries, sharp citrus for nose melting effect. Curry leaf. (93/23)

While the nose offers more fruits, this is generally a proper, powerful and straightforward heavily peated whisky.
    • Nose
The fruits immediately jump out, with blueberries and cherries leading the charge, all the while backed by hints of barbeque smoke and cured meat, as well as nougat. Rather delicious, although a tad shy.
    • Taste
Big and intense notes of rubber. Iodine even. With more tar, charcoal and peat to come, all of them completely overpowering the wine cask fruitiness, which is barely detectable.

Lots of peat and licorice, with a whisper of sal ammoniac.

This is an exeptional Bunna Moine ( peated) experiment with wine casks that is rare for Bunnahabhain . The result is a whisky that is hard to allocate when tasting blind. The influence of the bordeaux casks make this whisky taste much more mature and exclusive in comparison to comparable aged whiskys. The wine is not dominant although present in the high quality Bunna spirit. Toffee, espresso and tobacco mixed with hints of raisins , pepper and ripe fruits create a very , very good product that has a nice afterburner and made this limited expression to my favorit of the over 200 single malt whiskys tasted. If you are not fainthearted and love the Islay high quality spirit this is one of the unique rare opportunities to experience an absolute top quality whisky at a reasonable price if you can still grab one . 93 points !

Palate: The smoke is getting stronger. Sweet red fruits. Again pine nuts. A little bit of wood. Meat sauce. Very pleasant mouthfeel. Attention: It hardly tolerates water, but is pure drinkable, or even with just a few drops of water.

Finish: Long with smoke and sour cherry jam. Very clean.

Conclusion: Strange that he can not handle water, otherwise top. From the age ago, the 9 years also correspond to the overall impression. The 58.1% is not noticeable, the impression is rather 52%.
