Very fruity on the nose, the smoke is initially very restrained to barely perceptible. Becomes more complex with patience, more fruit, a bit maritime, scorched cinnamon stick. Sweet at first on the palate, then the peat smoke is a little clearer than on the nose, fruits give way to more and more spices and an increasing dryness. In the finish salt, smoke, dried fruit. Becomes creamier at the end and loses a bit of the bite that was surprising for 46%.

Viking Pride, the pride of the Vikings in the Travel Edition. Must have had the Vikings on board when they made their way across the North Sea to the Orkney Islands and brought the whisky there. Sure, that's nonsense, the Vikings had nothing on the horned helmet with whisky. With Orkney, yes - and that's why they devoured the Vikings at Highland Park. The 18 Highland Park has been around for a long time, but it comes with a weak 43% vol. bottled. This has at least 3% more, that's something.

    • Nose
Highland Park just has a nice aroma. At first, the smoke does not seem to be there, there are orange peel and warm orange juice, a little cinnamon and a few spices and everything has a slight hint of an aroma that could be the smoke. Freshly baked nut cookies, suitable for the Christmas season, pleasant and tasty.
    • Taste
The taste shows that the 3% more is good for the whisky, it has more power and that is not a bad thing with the pride of the Vikings. The orange juice is back, but now the herbal smoke comes into its own and there are a few roasted nuts and almonds in the juice, roasted almonds with caramelized sugar and smoke - but this special Highland Park smoke. It's not spectacular - but nice.
    • Finish
The wood could be more exciting, it is there with a few spices and the heather peat smoke (the word has to be mentioned once in Highland Park) and then it dies away.

Highland Park makes stand-alone whiskys that go well with the stand-alone Orkney ion islands. Even without all that Viking nonsense. The 18er is a good whisky, the black Travel Edition gives it a little more power and a little heartiness. Unfortunately, Highland Park belongs to the Edrington Group, which relies on massive marketing for whisky and is massively turning the price screw. If you get this whisky for just over € 100, the end of 2021 is halfway ok - for € 140 and more, that's no longer acceptable. It's a shame about the good whisky ...

More intense, but less complex than the regular 18 imho.

More European oak, more spices, more smoke, more of a bite at the end.
Less fragrant, less balanced, less heathery and honeyed.

Still worth it if you can get it < 100 € I'd say.

Certainly not a bad whisky, just too round for me and also a little unimportant. Highland Park is not my distillery and it doesn't have enough of its own either.
    • Nose
      85 85
Intense and dense. Tender smoke, sherry barrel, dark chocolate, toffee, heather, leather. The alcohol is well integrated.
    • Taste
      85 85
Slightly smoky, sweet, vanilla, salt and herbs.
    • Finish

The finish is rather short, with smoke and herbs.

a really delicious 18 year old half board. I like it very much. Find it a little better than the 18 standard with Viking blood.
    • Nose
Lots of herbs, spicy, citrus fruits, earthy, dried fruits, grass and some honey, apple notes, in the background light maritime notes
    • Taste
spicy, fruity, some oak, dried fruits, honey, later slightly salty, some pepper, bitter towards the end
    • Finish
lots of dried fruits, spicy, sweet. Here, too, the honey notes, becoming slightly bitter and dry at the end

  22. DulischM scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Very sweet and creamy, I particularly like the smoke and the sherry flavors in the mouth, the two harmonize perfectly with each other. I can imagine this whisky very well in summer with a cup of vanilla ice cream ...
    • Nose
Very creamy with vanilla and above all with a lot of dark and runny honey, a little flowery like heather. Then some fruit come through, sweet red apple, green grapes and especially raisins. In addition, some sweet citrus aromas, orange and passion fruit.
    • Taste
Creamy sweet again in the mouth with honey and vanilla. The whisky is slightly smoky with aromas of sherry, raisins and chocolate. The heather reappears.
    • Finish
The finish has creamy honey and dry cocoa spice in the mouth, then again the full load of heather.

Strong taste of Sherry Rauch herbs and maritime. I like it and it is also fairly priced

This was a sample courtesy of peatbogger.
HP never disappoint and I am fairly sure that if I owned a bottle, this would have grown on me and I would have probably scored it higher.
    • Nose

Mmmmm a nice toffee nose and this is no ordinary toffee, this high end quality toffee. Also Old Jamaica chocolate bar, the one with the rum raisins. I also get some nice fudge notes, in fact very much like the whisky fudge I got for Christmas. Old antique dark wood furniture. Wonderful.
    • Taste
      88 88
The taste isn't as great as the nose but still very good. This tastes a lot stronger than 43%. More raisins than toffee this time.
There is a nice mix of heather and liquorice, a strange combination but it works. I am just taking tiny little sips and the more I sip the better it gets. It's more like the flavours get stronger.
    • Finish
      85 85
It's weakness is it's finish but I don't want that to sound bad. It's short to medium and that high class toffee on the nose has just dropped to your normal every day.

  27. Issie did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

The 3% more alcohol but you can see very clearly. The is not nearly as round as the normal 18s, but has just more whistle. My taste is better without question.
    • Nose
Oha that is very different than the normal 18s

Some earth, also herbs, grasses and pine needles, honey, dried fruits, apple

The relationship to the normal 18s is clearly recognizable. From the feeling, I would say that the dark viking pride sherry barrel proportion is greater
    • Taste
Honey, sweet muesli, apple, strawberries, redcurrants, grapefruit, pepper

A beautiful Highland Park, the slightly higher alcohol level is very good. Pleasant to drink but not really outstanding.
    • Nose
      85 85
Also this Highland Park starts quite restrained and takes time in the glass. I find sweet aromas that are beautifully embedded in mineral, slightly phenolic and spicy notes that have remained from the smoke which have been removed and rebuilt over the years of Fassreifung. Later, citrus notes are added.
    • Taste
      86 86
Sweet, voluminous and strong, a little ginger-spicy, spicy and a splash of fruit acid, then creamy, milk chocolate.
The 46% are very good at the Highland Park.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium long, creamy and still a bit tingling.
