For a 14-year-old malt it is not expressive, there was not enough strength, there was not enough pressure, Loyalty of the Wolf (this is the name of this release) was not felt.
    • Nose
      83 83
Not bright, calm; first vanilla and pear-apple compote; followed by oak notes; meadow grass, heather, young willow; a little sherry influence, even less smoke.
    • Taste
      83 83
Watery, the case when the lack of alcoholism is not beneficial; the sweetness of light fruits and citrus freshness are added to oak and herbaceous tones; the smoke is still barely visible.
    • Finish
      82 82
Medium duration, crisp; oak and sherry notes turn into heather and sweet honey tones; astringent spice at the end.

I would call it the better typical Highland Park. A lot more interesting than the 12y.
    • Nose
      82 82
First impression fruity exotic nose with flowers.
    • Taste
      84 84
Taste is more peaty, heather and spices. Not that an Islay-loving chap would call it peaty. Minor Vanilla and sweetness. Full-bodied and mouth-watering feel.
    • Finish
      83 83
Medium long lingering taste, that becomes again more sweet. But as main impression remains the typical heather.

Very pleasant dram that could really benefit from a higher ABV.

  6. Pyromann scored this whisky 72 points Expert Senior

Fine whisky for easy drinking. Nothing too complex, taste and smell rather simpler. The taste is certainly more interesting than the smell. Softly woody whisky. What I vaguely remember the old HP 12, so it was certainly more pronounced and something from everything, but certainly more in the smoke and some expressiveness and roughness. This one is more sweet and soft, such an immature HP.
    • Nose
Alcohol, not very intense in aroma, slightly honey and earthy grass tones. After a long smell there is some synthetics and a bit of consistency. Detergent on the floor.
    • Taste
The taste is surprisingly sweeter, lighter and simple, uncomplicated. Soft and sweet after milk-chocolate candies.
    • Finish
      Medium, woody, very slightly sweet.

Elegant and tasty whisky. Maybe it's little bit simple but aromatic and delicious.
    • Nose
      88 88
Elegant sherry, apples, tropical citruses, cinnamon, gentle peaty smoke and deep barley malt.
    • Taste
      85 85
Gentle peaty smoke, cake, citric zest, fresh fruits, old wood, sweet malt.
    • Finish
      82 82
      Peaty, smoky, zesty, sweetly spicy.

For comparison I started with a "regular" 12YO, a recent Viking Honour bottling.
This is in my opinion quite a bit better.
It's not a sophisticated dram to ponder too much upon, but a very nice, enjoyable and care free evening sipper.
Thanks to ronnholt for this sample.

A lot in common with the 12, light, fresh and fruity.
Actually a bit more fruity. And sweeter.
      More sweet sherry notes.
Green apple peel, orangy citrus, some pineapple juice.
Not what I would call peat, but a soft touch of smoke.
Just like the 12, it's all good but I kind of wish it was more of it.
    • Taste
      85 85
Quite a bit more potent than the 12YO.
More sherry makes for a much more substancial arrival and bigger body.
More spice to kick of the party, I get a nice hint of ginger.
May be the extra 2,3% ABV that adds to the feeling of more substance. So what would it have been like on 46%?
Lightly citric with a handfull of nutty flavours from midway.
    • Finish
      84 84
About medium lenght, fading without any dram.
      Stays sweet.

I miss a higher ABV, so pleasant but weak flavors. 83/84.
    • Nose
      83 83
Malt, citruses, vanilla, pear compote, pepper and ginger. Touch of peat.
    • Taste
      84 84
Thin, slightly watery. Apple compote with lot of cloves. Orange peel, sherry and salted minerals.
    • Finish
      83 83
      Medium length, salty, bittersweet.
