The new Deanston 18 v. Chr. Chieftains with 49.8%
On the nose very dry, spicy with dark fruits and some honey (Deanstontypisch). Oily mild onset in the mouth. Again dark grapes and honey. The finish is awesome. Really spicy and full, espresso and cinnamon with dark chocolate and europ. Oak. Extremely long ... cool! Again a Deanston with the special something. Over 90 points in any case

I had a bottle cracked open about 6 months ago. It is still here. I feel shy treating my friends with it. Not impressed at all. I expected more of an 18 year old whisky finished in wine cask. There are out there much better quality wine cask finished whiskies. For example Glen Garrioch1999 19 year old wine cask finish - very nice!
This is just not pleasant at all. As a good friend and a great whisky reviewer Mr HS305 describes this kind of drinks as wineskey in the worst meaning.

    I expected more ...
    • Nose
      81 81
Very subtle nose, some acidity, bread drink, raspberry
    • Taste
      84 84
A bit bitter, not particularly oppressive, a little bit of sulfur - comes across as rather thin
    • Finish
      84 84
      Short and unimpressive.

A nice example what a good finish or second maturation can do for a whisky.
    • Nose
Very fresh and fruity, grapes, apricot, peach. A bit of a musky note too. Heather. I’m getting some slight sherry notes too. Was this in a sherry cask before finishing?
    • Taste
Velvety arrival makes it feel luxurious. Wine and sherry are married well. Some mild pepper, spices.
    • Finish
Soft mouthfeel continues, white and blue grapes, cardemom. Medium long.

Very good casks this Pomerol Wine Finish I´ts seems to work fine with this Deanston, many different aromas and good nose.

Once again, a beautifully matured whisky, which stands out from the sea of increasingly interchangeable sherry monster pleasant. The finish in the Pomerol barrels has given this Deanston a whole range of beautiful and unusual fruit flavors. It's not going to be my favorite Deanston, but it lacks a bit of the spicy depth, but he's undoubtedly at the top of the list and a very nice and equal addition to the destillerie's own barrel experiments, which are currently being rolled out one by one become. One or the other he surpasses it loosely!
    • Nose
At the beginning - as with freshly opened Deanston not so rare - a little overcast behind a veil of dull beeswax. However, after a short time it has disappeared in the glass and instead of the usual honey I have here wonderfully spicy dark malt and pretty much everything that the fruit counter from the field of citrus fruits sells. Ripe juicy oranges and mouth-watering lemons, tart limes and grapefruit. In addition, sweetened redcurrants, freshly cut strawberries, walnuts and candied green apples. Dark cane sugar and caramel give this rather sour fruit cocktail a creamy sweet frame. The oak barrels are still discreetly held back in the nose, show through a few tart spices such as cardamom and cinnamon sticks. The quite noticeable alcohol comes cooling with a menthol note.
    • Taste
In the mouth a very tingling interplay between the sour citrus fruits and the old oak staves. All taste areas of the tongue are involved here, from sweet to sour to tart and spicy, just about everything is represented, and it tingles and hisses neatly on the tongue. On fruits again a sour-sweet compote with citrus fruits and berries, in addition a creamy honey sweetness and dark malt.
Here comes the long maturation time to bear, the oak underlays the fruity spectacle from the beginning with a nice warm carpet of spicy and harsh wood flavors with a little dry tobacco, without bringing too much bitterness into play. The alcohol is less spicy than the nose suggested.
    • Finish
As you would expect from an 18-year-old whisky, the finish is long and characterized here by a sweet and sour dialogue. The barrels still add nice chocolaty and tart roasted aromas. A tart-sweet grapefruit and a malt candy ebben only very slowly, a pleasant red wine flavor remains the longest.

Warning: this review may come from a Deanston lover.

    So... Pomerol Finish...
Well [beep cencored word starting with S] there a so many Deanston xyz finishes recently, that I get somewhat tired.

For those who tried all of them, this one is better than 15 Madeira, 15 Sauternes, 19 Muscat. Only the 12 Palo Cortado one was a tiny bit better.

Palo Cortado has the better palate and this one has the best finish I had in a long time (not only in Deanston whisky).

If you still can get your hands on a bottle, get one.
