Very good, but not as good as the 4.2, 6.3, 7.3 or 8.3. My least favourite of these releases. I think Octomore is slipping as of late and I wonder if this is a sign of a new trend in what to expect going forward.

May 27 2019: Had another dram near the end of this bottle after more than two months of oxidation, and it has improved quite a bit from the first few drams I had.

These Octomore's improve immensely (two-four months) after opening. Best to rate Octomore's at half the fill level or lower and at least two-four months after opening to allow a true representation of what an Octomore can be, and is. Fantastic stuff!

[March, 2019] A quick review of a sample...

...that proves why I do not like Octomore at all. To me this is a dull modern whisky with a stupid design (as much peat as possible regardless how it tastes) that owns the sexiness of a religious extremist. From time to time I taste an Octomore sample simply to remind me what I do not like.

But again, there is no accounting for taste and I acknowledge that many others enjoy such extremes - or is it just the clever marketing of Jim that is based on our relentless search of unique impressions? I am too old for this, I am in search of enjoyable moments instead...

The colour is pale gold and the nose offers this aggressive bitter-peaty profile that some adore - but sorry folks, to me this is just dull. When I sit at a bonfire and the thick smoke blows towards my position I stand up and move to a less annoying place. So why should I sniff this thick smoke out of my glass? Just because it is ... extreme?
    • Taste
      84 84
The taste is just two-dimensional on heavy peaty notes and sweet barley sugars - all other flavours are buried under these bold impressions. So why should I drink this - just because it is ... extreme? Sorry, I am not an extremist!
    • Finish
      81 81
The dram arrives warming and a little hot on the palate with a nice creamy mouthfeel but bitter-astringent moments from the heavy peating level, too. The finish is long and turns more bitter towards the end which is unpleasant to my taste buds. Water strengthens the bitter-peaty notes - so add it only if you are an extreme peat-head...

    Blind tasting, two dram note.

Probably the best balanced heavily peated whisky I ever had. All flavours are so well intermingled and balanced, it's simply just a pure joy to drink this. Even this is not very complex, I never got bored nosing and tasting this because the fruitiness is right up my alley, and it's just so well made. I would've never guessed this were a 60+% cask strength, as the alcohol is so well integrated, which makes this dangerously quaffable. The dry carbolicness this provides is as clean as a whistle. In combination with this bright and yellow fruitiness and this very warm and earthy peatiness, and this staggering balance, this makes for an exceptional heavily peated dram.
If this would show a little more complexity, this would be 90+ points for sure.
And I thought, exceptional heavily peated drams of this quality were extinct nowadays...
    • Nose
carbolic, dry, warm, earthy peat, baked potatoe skins, a yellow and bright fruitiness reveals itself after a moment, cooked fruits, greengage plums, mirabelles, quince jelly, a little hay and hints of farmhouse, rich and measured nose with an exceptional balance, not very complex but also pretty much flawless.
    • Taste
very measured arrival even if undiluted, carbolic earthy notes alongside fruity sweetness, the aromas of the nose translate into flavours, quince jelly, baked potatoe skins, a little hay and farmhouse, some dryness, warm and earthy peat notes develop into a big fruity carbolicness that peaks at the second part of the developement into the finish, greengage plums again, mirabelles, big body with a nice depth and again an outstanding balance, dangerously moreish.
    • Finish
carbolic, dry, earthy peat, quince jelly, hints of hay and farmhouse, warming, medium to long.

First encounter with Octomore and I expect something approaching the high-ester jamaican rums.

N : mix of charcoal smoke and turpentine, a touch iodine and vanilla. Maybe a little herbs too (seaweed ?). It's a nice multifaceted peat and not that aggressive, but it's all about peat. After half and hour it opens differently, sweetness gets more prominent : cereals and sugary biscuits but also a cold chlorophyllic presence I never experienced in any other whisky. I might be losing it, after ten more minutes I start smelling something close to pesto.
M : back on some more regular tracks with black pepper, coastal smoke and expected vanilla sweetness. I'm not sure how to explain this; but it's at the same time mouthcoating and drying. I'll add touch of oak bitterness to the list.
F : neverending (seriously) iodine smoke with the chlorophyll come-back.

That was some nosing. And I didn't specify but at 62.9% the alcohol is incredibly smoothed out. 8/10

Came back to it five months later and my notes are still very relevant. I'm adding : juniperus and black radish on the nose, still schizophrenic texture-wise in mouth with a touch of barbecued pork ribs. That chlorophyll in the finish again ! Definitely buying a bottle.

Peat, nice smoke, bacon, salty, sea breeze. after the first peat wave the sweetness kicks in. sweet barley, some spicey ginger, some yellow fruits. mingles nicely with the peat. finish is long and full of peat. Fine Ocotmore!

    • Nose
Pretty coastal with a good bit of salty sea spray, light notes of rubber gloves, and a fair amount of sugary barley water. The smoke might be the most intense of the three. Subtle oak shavings, as well as charred lemon peel.
    • Taste
Honey and nectarines, with dense wood smoke, and a sprinkle of salt, with a whisper of ginger. Slightly medicinal, with a hint of iodine and a whiff of licorice.
    • Finish
      Iodine, peat and pickled lemon.

Acre peat, rather balais, but which is gently tempered by syrah and rivesaltes. Malt is - as often - clearly in the spotlight. Young, fresh and lively in the mouth, but without the defects of youth. Roots enough, plugged into the cereal. The wine barrels are only there to slightly round the corners, without allowing to express their primary aromas.

    Enthusiasm 3/5
