I'm a fan of Arran. So the rehearsal was a must!
With these key data, not too much should go wrong.
    • Nose
It starts out fruity on the nose. It smells like a bourbon sherry whisky should smell. Honey-soft raisins with a little exotic fruit and everything underlaid with fine vanilla.
    • Taste
Very full and strong in the mouth. Now he's showing his age. Peppery vanilla with a malty load of spices. Good barrel selection! Always sweet, then sour to umami and spicy, ... everything looks very pleasant and complex, wow.
    • Finish
Medium to long with a full body but only slightly spiciness, it always remains vanilla sweet and then slowly fades away warming. Good 20s, ... he deserves respect! I can only decide whether it is worth the price when I have more samples to test.

  10. Calmar scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

A wonderful and promising beginning in the aroma, unfortunately, was not fully supported by the taste / finish, and although overall the whisky leaves a pleasant impression, its potential is not fully revealed, which is disappointing.
    • Nose
Open, dry, sweet caramel notes, freshly planed boards, floral honey shades, propolis, wild herbs, candied citrus fruits, leather goods, light mineral tones, crushed grain, cigarettes, in general, an airy, crystal-clear aroma.
    • Taste
Soft, rich, buttery notes, tart woody tones, vanilla, creamy caramel sweetness, lemon zest, a little ginger, peppery wave, grain, generally pleasant, but after the aroma there is a feeling of strong simplification, lack of depth.
    • Finish
Light, refreshing, even simpler than the taste - lemon peel, oak, tobacco, ginger, pepper, sweet caramel shades.

1600) Arran, 20YO, Brodick Bay, The Explorers Series Volume 1
    • Nose
N- A vat of ex-Bourbon and Sherry hogshead, then finished in Olorosso butts. Highly active with alluring fragrance of sweet citrus and toasted nuts. Pleasantly spiky throughout with dress of coffee chocolate, nutty oil and heather peat. (88/22)
    • Taste
P- Dryness mingled well with ripe fruit and mature cask, caramel, toffee and coffee, some sweet spices with hints of waxy clove, before mellowed out by subtle leather and rubbery nuances. (90/22)
    • Finish
F- Medium long, chewy dried fruits of granulated ginger and sweet spiciness, wrapped up with soft heathery smoke. A well balanced and rounded Arran nonetheless, but expect more depth considering the aged. (87/21)

B/B- 89/22, Perhaps a small amount of peated stock in the vat which works wonderful in this release.

beautiful malt. Very complex due to the different barrel maturations, especially in the nose.
    • Nose
Oak, a bit spicy, very fruity, raisins, plums, a pair of citrus fruits and exotic fruits, then there is a lot of honey, sweet, vanilla and caramel, some chocolate, then it switches back to the citrus fruits
    • Taste
sweet fruity start, peaches, lots of honey, vanilla and caramel, then comes some oak, fading into citrus fruits, becoming a bit tart towards the end
    • Finish
spicy fresh, fruity, slightly sweet, spicy, beautiful oak notes. At the end the citrus fruits again and slightly tart notes

The absolute best Arran I've tried. Sunshine in a bottle. Beautifully tropical, stunning form on the palate, a long intense finish, and great complexity. The sherry is in a supporting role here.
    • Nose
Rich and spiky. Loads of caramel and honey, and fresh ginger. White cherries, grapefruit, raspberry, and orange oil, rounding off into vanilla and clove. A bit of fresh mint. Some dark chocolate in there as well. It gets richer as it sits: now there’s sandalwood and more Oloroso nuttiness. The citrus has dried out and concentrated, and is joined by jammy dates and yellow plums. Some old pencils as well as tropical flowers.
    • Taste
Medium-thick texture. Full and rich. Barley sugar and cereals up front, with a touch of cinnamon, milk chocolate, graham crackers, and salt. Concentrated yellow and tropical fruit in the midpalate, along with candied nuts, egg bread, and toffee. As it develops, the oak starts to come through, followed by strong passionfruit, mango, apple, and green tea. Just a hint of leather. A twinge of pine, graphite, limestone, and earth start to come through with time, as well as more ginger.
    • Finish
Intense and very long. Fresh orange for days. Fragrant cedar, flowers, strong beeswax dripping with honey, apple, caramel, and vanilla. Pineapple, mango, and yellow plums. White cherries and white chocolate. A clean sea salt note shines through, slowly getting more maritime.

    Nose:
Pleasantly fruity with peach, apple and raisins. The scent of lemon zest now stands out. Vanilla and a toffee note are added. Finally, I hear a fine wood aroma.

    Taste:
It starts fruity on the palate. I can taste raisins, dates and oranges with a slight acidity. A malty-sweet note then appears. It continues very creamy and spicy with cinnamon and pepper. I find vanilla and oak flavoring in the end.

    Outlet:
A medium-long, slightly fruity finish with subtle chocolate and spice notes.

Compared to the previously tasted 21yo (WID: 122174), the Brodick Bay is somehow less classy and delicate.

Brodick Bay is a little darker. Both the wood and the fruit. Overall, however, somehow less harmonious than the 21yo.

Brodick Bay is certainly not a bad whisky, but I wouldn't buy it. I like the 21yo better.

Brodick Bay & Lochranza Castle, the first two in a probably 3-part series.
I have to say that Lochranza Castle is much more mature and harmonious, I definitely like it better. The finish in Amontillado barrels brings a very harmonious note.
Brodick Bay has a more youthful character with a rather bitter, tannin-like barrel character.

definitely a good malt - personally, the style is not so, because he can not decide between his Vattinganteilen and I lack a certain clarity.
Without the extreme fleshy notes in my nose, I would have given 2 more points - I just do not like whisky smelling of Sunday roast
    • Nose

first waxy citrus zests, canned fruit cocktail with peach, tangerine, pink grapefruit stew with white peel, freshly cut light wooden strips, crystalline flowers, orange oil, apple juice, green tea, after an hour in the glass it becomes meatier, funds, crispy chicken skin, pork roast with crust - the Nose is very clean, mildly aromatic, very volatile

Nose: Creamy and fruity, the nose opens with notes of toffee and fresh citrus. In the mouth: At once sweet and intense, the mouth reveals successively notes of dark chocolate, grapes for a great depth and a beautiful complexity. A dash of water can open on woody and peppery notes. The finale: Long and memorable. A very greedy glass that transcribes all the fruity and delicate character of Single Malts Arran.
