Port Charlotte 15 yo 2002/2018 (60.2%, Whisky Broker for Spirit of Islay, refill sherry hogshead, cask #1161, 254 bottles) Five stars
I think the good people behind this bottle know a thing or two about Islay and its whiskies, as I could observe for myself in the past.… Colour: gold. I mean, serious gold. Nose: I don’t know if the word ‘immaculate’ means much in the case of a sherry hogshead, but I would still use it. Lemon curd, custard, seawater, and this thing you should absolutely taste one day, Corsican citron liqueur. And then, a wide range of tinier aromas, cigarettes, quinces, wulong, Grisons meat, cigars, the obligatory old walnuts, dried apricots… Between us, I find this rather stunning. With water: it’s not that it changes much, it just gets a tad easier. Well done. Mouth (neat): exceptionally well balanced, which doesn’t happen very often with peat plus sherry. Of course we all know legendary hyper-sherried peaters, old Laphroaigs and such, but I wouldn’t say those are or were the norm. Anyway, this works a treat, with more walnuts, oranges, tobacco, and this luminous almost lemony smokiness that everyone loves. Light toffee too. With water: hurray! Splendid saltiness – you would almost believe someone added real salt – plus tobacco, dried fruits such as quinces and apricots, figs, a wee drop of Worcester sauce… Well all is well (oh, S.!) Finish: long, salty, with just a little more bitterness. Or even more tobacco and walnuts if you like. Comments: bang, serious stuff here! You could have called the anti-maltoporn brigade, they’re getting a bit rusty these days.

Nose: leathery sweetness, hints of cedar, cinnamon buns

Palate: there's a hint of sulfur (not sulfate, rubber, or other but really sulfur), cedar (very fresh), cinnamon, leather

Finish: not overly hot, it lingers a long time a drifts towards cedar

This is great. The sulfur is just a touch and is really an interesting note. It also doesn't linger. It disappears as you let the glass sit. Little strong to say elegant but it is well balanced. 92.

Very nice. Intense but with great balance. That is what I wish for with more mature bottlings. I might not have needed the finish in the sherry (if it was full aging then the cask was worn out). But that's just a nuance at a very high level.

First I find a lot of nuts. In addition, light fruits with a focus on lemon. Then come the intense aromas: ashtray, cowshed and eucalyptus. That's well balanced.
    • Taste
      90 90
Limoncello and green tea over smoked mussels then simmered in a Des Fischers Freund brew.
At some point I'll try out all my fantasy dishes from my reviews and write a cookbook. ;-)

Smokey-fruity, with lots of lemon, some seaweed and mussels. A few red fruits pressed in between. Pipe tobacco is on the table.

Smoke, earthy cellar, old leather, sweet jam, a bit of salt, very pleasant. Good stuff

it’s interesting that so many reviews here are wordless, but this is just
a damn good dram, one that doesn’t necessarily leaves one speechless,
but it just doesn’t need words to describe it. It exists in its own
    simple splendor.

old leather, of course.. the peat is simply fragrant with earthy tones, bitter herbs and musty wood cabinets where a tiny crumb of yellow sulphur can be found
    • Taste
      91 91
perfect balance.. sweet, elegant.. water brings salt and a certain fiery tartness.
    • Finish
      91 91
not too bitter.. some white pepper.. the lingering taste of some slightly sweetened tea.. maybe lavender.

This whisky is a lot darker in reality than the picture. Great, great balanced peated/sherried whisky!
