Really good standard. At least the miniature I had really impressed me. Great combination of bourbon and sherry casks. Fruity fresh. Sweet. Herbs. Decent drinking strength. A great whisky!

Ben Nevis 10 years, 46%, original bottling (circa 2018). Ageing: Bourbon and Sherry casks

Nose: Dark pastries, spelled bran and nut cake, slightly burnt pizza crust, you can still smell the wood-fired oven in the background. In addition, dried apples, mustard seeds and aniseed, a hint of salmiak and salted liquorice, as well as additional oranges, apricot jam and grapefruit. I also recognize some sweetish pipe tobacco.

Palate: citrus fruits, gooseberries, apricot jam, but also plums and cinnamon. Then I taste aspirin tablets, feels the same way, plus oysters, sea salt and the mustard seeds again. In addition, some nut chocolate and a mixture of pepper, ginger and mint.

Finish: Medium to long. Dark chocolate with raisins and nuts, salted nuts, salted, popcorn, orange peel, slightly bitter orange marmalade.

Conclusion: More rustic than previous 10-year-old Ben Nevis, the 2013 bottling was much more harmonious and fruity intense. This Ben Nevis has exciting rough edges, I like it better. 86/100 points (2022)

The nose in particular can be described as a curiosity here, as it comes up with many aromas that are not exactly pleasant and anything but sweet, actually quite the opposite.
And although the palate and finish also have a somewhat dirty character, I am extremely positively surprised and also taken with it. This bottling really has a very high degree of independence. I won't soon forget this dram.
    • Nose

An unusual to curious potpourri of very special notes is offered here. Rotten fallen fruit (apples and pears), sweaty cheese feet, modeling clay, aniseed, vanilla, citrus notes, matchstick paste, also mineral notes with a slightly metallic touch.
The alcohol stings something in the nose.
    • Taste
      88 88
Sparkling start, slightly oily body. A nice surprise in taste after the first impression of the nose.
Brown cane sugar, caramel, pineapple, vanilla, maple syrup, very lightly fermented apples, cola wine gum, rotten wood. Dirty, but somehow tasty.
    • Finish
      87 87
Short to medium length finish. Fine citrus notes, brown sugar and more cola wine gum.

very good dram for money. classic whisky profile (not too much fresh bourdon wood influence) with some more mineral, cereal, herbal dry sherry ,notes--slightly heavyish viscous body, hints of smoke. desperate to try more Ben Nevis whiskies.

The real fun to be had here is the difference in what you smell vs what you get on the palate. When first opened and smelled, I thought this is going to be a shy one, all on sherry, cocoa and cereals. But the actual taste sets an unapologetic coastal tone. Plus it behaves like a significantly older malt. Don't know if it's true about some older stuff in the vat, or it's just 10 very busy years in those casks (busy in a good way, no redundant tampering). You can easily sip it at its 46% but it also performs well with water, although caution is advised.
    • Nose
      85 85
Starts shy, but on medium to heavier notes of cocoa, lightly roasted coffee beans (of a more fruity variety), raisins, prunes. In development, you get chicory, oats, butter and other poridge-y things.
    • Taste
      88 88
Now there's the surprise: starts way bolder than the nose suggests. medium arrival with sea spray, resin and something like salty fudge. Full bodied development, dried fruit starts to feature, also some kind of pralines and red vermouth. All in all, the salty coastal notes prevail and underline the experience.
    • Finish
      88 88
Medium to long. Soot, well swept fireplace and slightly burned cookies. A little bit of wet grass or seaweed.

In my early days, the malt and grain note was too intense for me. Today I like the character of Ben Nevis 10 years even more. He is varied, direct and unconventional - 06.07.2019
    • Nose
Slightly musty, herbaceous notes, fruity, multivitamin or mango juice, wine gum, lacquer finish, Haribo bats, malty-aromatic, cereals, oatmeal, grassy with a hint of mint, maggot herb, gravy, oak wood
    • Taste
Sweet and mild, peppery spicy, milder, honey, wine gum, sweet and spicy, dried plum, dried apricot, liquorice, waxy-soapy transition
    • Finish
      medium

    Ben Nevis 10 yo 46%

Aroma: open, bright, creamy caramel, toffee, vanilla, fresh pastries, sponge cake, slightly mineral-metallic notes, whetstone, metal chips, burnt match heads. Over time, more sherry notes are revealed - raisins, dried apricots, light spices, milk chocolate, a bit of oak.

Taste: sweet-spicy, ginger-pepper attack, cinnamon, cloves, boiled condensed milk, sweet pastries, dark raisins, pleasant oak tannins, very bright, rich.

Finish: raisin-confectionery, dark raisins, chocolate, sweet coffee, "station" cake, some spices, in the end apple sour, medium length.

    Grade 87

Bottom line: the reference dozen that you must have in the bar. An excellent balance of sherry and bourbon, a bright base, it all gave a very good result, it seems that he is older than his years.

Today I do not have that strong, for me, typical Ben Nevis notes. I usually had Kaba powder, nougat, tree resin and spices / herbs. Here are mainly the tree resin and the spices / herbs there. From Kabapulver and nougat is not much to feel. Is a fresh sample from another batch. Still a really good malt. Although less Ben Nevis notes and thus a little less or different character.
