Judge this one as a young spirit and you'll certainly appreciate it. This is a real promising spirit. After one year the oloroso has already done a nice job ... imagine what it could be in ten years or more.
    • Nose
      81 81
The nose is (what did you expect) quite spirity. The oloroso influence is already clearly present. The nose has a spicy touch, a bit like tabasco. There are notes if gumball present as well. Even a slightly smokey touch as well ... not peat, but more like BBQ smoke.
    • Taste
      84 84
The taste is very hot because of the high abv. Gumball all over the place right now, the influence of the oloroso is already noticable trough the spirit but still has a long time to mature. There is a sour touch in this as well, like sour candy.
This is actually really nice if you take its age in account.
    • Finish
      82 82
The finish is rather short and but pleasant. The gumball stays in the mouth for a few seconds and then fades away slowly into a more sour flavour.

Ardnamurchan releases spirit like clockwork, in anticipation of their final whisky. This Warehouse Release Batch 5 matured for a year on smaller oloroso octaves. That explains the lovely, coppery color.

While the nose is still quite spirity, it does not small like new make. The small sherry cask has clearly put its foot down. I get tobacco leaves, plums, but also a hint of rotting plants and a recently doused barbecue. Not completely pleasant, but not off-putting either. This spirit is clearly still underway – doh! – but it is going down the right path.

On the palate, it’s all very alcoholic and rough. The sherry has not yet shaved of the edges. And while I already detect some dark and sweet notes, the taste is dominated by wood shavings, sour candy, overripe kiwi and some bubblegum. It is quaffable without water.

Lots of spices kick in – cubeb pepper and even some mustard seeds – in the finish. And grainy wood. But it’s nicely warm!

Promising, but still has a long way to go. I believe the distillery releases this only to keep the fans happy and to allow the brand to remain on the radar. That’s fine by me.

  6. Rowald Sweet Empire scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Obviously young and feisty. But promising spirit nonetheless. For one year old stuff it is already nicely layered. I expect great stuff when this will reach an age of 10 years or older.

  7. GJR scored this whisky 67 points Connoisseur

Too young. Oloroso overpowerd by spirity notes. Oloroso notes are present but not accentuated enough. Although spirity it feels promising.
