This bottle was opend and tasted by the 17. German Whisky Grand Slam in Berlin (5.8.2018)
More than 25 Whiskyheads tasted this awesome Ardbeg Islay Single Cask Whisky.

It is the winner of the ISLAY blind tasting contest 2018.
Congratulation to all members and many thanks to Herbert Emser (rscmb17943) who opend his own bottle for the Grand Slam.

    Slàinte!

Nose: sour cherry, tamarind, figs, grape-skin, tobacco, bitter caramel, coffee candy.

Palate: ketch-up, sour cherry, bold smoke and tobacco, plastic, Chinese herbs, cloves and burnt walnut. A chaos of different bitterness.

Body: Light and hot, weird this way. Thank god the alcohol is there, otherwise it'll be a glass of lame light bodied peat water.

Finish: expected long, plastic, melted glass, smoke.

Overall: I'm not going to pretend that Imma hardcore whisky-lover and tell you I love this. It happens that this Ardbeg made me throw up. Thank god it's complex enough that I can bear myself mouth-fxxked by this for 15ml, I did pour the leftover into the toilet after all. Sorry I just cannot go with another 5ml.

What's the meaning of whisky if it loses all creamy/fruity/malty flavors and leaves only peat & herbal sherry? This is just not right, just not right.

    • Nose
Strong and elegant peat with peat, slag, mosquito coils, truffles and vines as the base, but more noticeable is the violets, peanut milk, rouge, capsules, soap bubbles, plastics, ladies cigarettes, Tobacco leaves, etc. The influence of Shirley is considered to be the opening of the Sanqi. It is expressed as brown sugar, black, leather, meat, and spiced slag.
From the smell of smell, it is the island king's aggravated peat, adding to the Shirley version.
    • Taste
The entrance is extremely fresh with shrubs, cranberries, cherries, kyoho grapes and a touch of lemon. Then quickly turned into coffee grounds, pepper, soot, theophylline, tobacco, sea salt. The tannins are medium-sized and are very stimulating with strong tea, peat, pepper and herbs.
    • Finish
Long-lasting, peat, ash, milky, nutty, theophylline, spice leaves, bitter cocoa.

The ripening in the sherry barrel is obvious at first, but it does not kill the distillery character, which can work its way forward after a while. Class single cask.
    • Nose
      92 92
Sherry full, with spicy smoke and a hint of Black Forest ham. Directly a spice mixture of thyme, rosemary and oregano is present. Rumrosines, some furniture polish, old wood, tobacco and leather notes. The smoke weakens over time and is only noticeable in the background. In front are still the spices, sherry, some licorice, pepper.
    • Taste
      92 92
Rolls hard on the tongue. Warm peat smoke, sherry, red grapes, raisins, dark chocolate, freshly brewed coffee. Fine-herb mixture, wood, fresh tobacco leaves.
Now that the first sip has passed over the tongue, the nose changes, becoming even denser, spicier.
Lemon cords pass the sherry flavors and mix with the herbs and spices, showing cold ashtray smoke with crushed lemon slice.
    • Finish
      91 91
Long and dry with lemon, cold ashtray smoke, pepper and coffee beans. Thyme and rosemary. The smoke clothes the whole mouth and dominates everything in the end.

I have a bottle of this. Not sure how much more it will go up in value for such a recent release?
