    A lovely good Inchmoan.
    • Nose
      Ahhh, what a nose, sauternes influences present. Syrupy sweetness, brown sugar , grapefruit, leather notes found, candy sweet; marzipan, chocolate , cherries, rum. tea leaves and sweet tobacco notes found, in the end some smoke.
    • Taste
      Complex with sweet wood smoke, burnt oak wet forest soil, cherries, overripe grapes, leather, wax, dust. Spicy aswel.
    • Finish
      Medium long-long, Soft and warm.

    A wonderful nose! The Sauternes finish is completely pure! Slightly smoky on the palate with less fruit! A beautiful malt that probably benefits from the finish?

      Syrupy sweet, brown sugar (muscovado?), Caramelized grapes, greasy leather, marzipan, chocolate, cherries, rum, tea leaves, sweetish tobacco / smoke

      Burnt oak, sweet wood smoke, frankincense, soil, forest soil, amarena cherries, ripe white grapes, leather, bread spices, wax, dust, dry, astringent;
    • Finish
      Soft, dry, furry on the palate, not particularly long;

    Well, what to say about this inaugural SMWS Inchmoan?! Honestly, it’s hard to fathom. I was expecting some gentle smokiness – Inchmoan being a usually peated style produced at Loch Lomond – but, instead I was presented with one of the most unsual SMWS whiskies I’ve tasted in a long time. It’s inarguably a thinking dram with moments of intrigue, unusual flavour combinations and a really rather excellent finish.

    • Nose
      Quite unusual. Perfume, damp cardboard, old leather chairs and something decidedly synthetic. Walnut nuttiness is joined by steeped fruit tea, animal hides, must and something rather umami – egg noodles and cornbread perhaps? Fruitiness is present, favouring orange, but likewise, quite musty and a touch soured. Water brings out herbals (nettles) as well as suggestions of a spiced cigar box. Odd. Really very odd.
    • Taste
      Again, I’m slightly confounded by this. Leather sofas, honey, buttermilk pancakes and soured lemons. These are merged with stale must, earthy nuttiness, sweet and sour sauce and tangy pepper. A few drops of water adds milk chocolate and allows the underlying fruitiness sometime in the limelight – peaches, apricots and lemon peels.
    • Finish
      Medium to long, with a very pleasant gradually fading dryness. Strawberry pavlova lingers in the back palate along with lemons and slight nuttiness. Water lessens the quality of the finish, bringing out some grippy tannins.

    SMWS Tasting Notes: An amazing red henna colour immediately attracted our attention and the gentle scent of sweet orange pure essential oil, perfumed leather and ripe strawberries dipped in powdered sugar made this a real sensual sensory sensation. The palate followed on with a Moroccan tagine of sweet apricots, sticky honey and tangy lemon. Water released aromas of a strawberry smoothie, new soft leather and chocolate covered macadamia nuts and the taste rounded it off perfectly, dark marc de Champagne truffles with an old fashioned Boulevardier cocktail. After fifteen years in an ex-bourbon hogshead, we transferred this whisky directly into a 1st fill Sauternes cask for the remainder of its maturation.
