I don't know if it's the almost two years this bottle has been open or if it's the mildness of my age. I had the dram at the beginning of 2020 with 84 pts. It has now been rated 87. And I would agree with Dionysus that this Caol Ila is the best of the Discovery series. Overall, very pleasant whisky, which beginners also liked.

Despite the low strength, there is a slight alcoholic stinging. But then floral aromas, clearly lemon peel, nice, pleasant, sweet (beech wood?) Smoke, light peat aroma and sweet grain, and also pear and a vinous vanilla.
    • Taste
      86 86
Pleasantly slightly smoky with a slight bruise on the tongue syringe that evaporates quickly. Still, he could use a little more alcohol. Creamy, nice, sweet barley, but also hints of yellow fruits, maybe ripe mirabelle plum, a little bit of lemon.

Not that long, with slight hints of nut flavors, clear barley. Again, lack of alcohol strength, overall sweet, but not lush and overall a bit flat.

A really nice introduction to independent bottlings of Caol Ila, especially for comparing to the 12 year old official bottling.

Big, crisp, mostly green, fresh fruit notes. Orange, banana, lime, cantaloupe, a little green apple, sage. The peat seems to present itself as a slightly spicy charcoal note. Very nice.
    • Taste
      83 83
Sweet and sour. The alcohol bites quite a bit. Vanilla, burned caramel, plastic-y, gooseberries, artificial banana, kiwi, mango, papaya, passionfruit. None of the flavors are very outspoken and the palate is quite restless, whereas the nose had great definition.
    • Finish
      83 83
Medium. Slightly dry, licorice wood, lemon juice, exotic fruits.

    • Nose
clear sherry behind smokiness, bread-like, clear sweetness, marzipan, fresh, slightly salty
    • Taste
smoky, a little campfire smoke, a little spicy, a little sherry, pleasant combination
    • Finish
      rather short, smoked ham

Green apple covered with peat (towards the charcoal). It does not develop very long, but there are some layers, there is something to look for after the first sip. Value for money quite ok.
    • Nose

Of course, peat, charred wood in the foreground, but fresh green apples, a little pear, are equally intense. Vanilla somewhere in the background, but sooner a vanilla pod, without creamy - pudding accents. A little nutmeg. Quite
    • Taste
      83 83
Unfortunately a bit watered down, yet slightly spicy. Consistent with the fragrance. Slight smokiness, towards the wood from the fire. Lots of green apple peel, apples too, pear. Some sweeter fruit appears in the background - maybe apricot or peach, maybe mandarin. Vanilla less than in the fragrance.
    • Finish
      84 84
Bitter accents dominate - green apple peel, maybe green walnut, maybe spices - nutmeg, cardamom. Medium long (but still surprisingly long considering the slightly watered down flavor).

Incredibly great Caol Ila, one of the best bottlings I've ever had on my palate. Not a crisp Islay whisky but still a round, complete and excellent drop!

  7. Dionysus scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

By far the best of the G&M discovery serie.
