[June, 2018]  I had this dram during this year's "Feis Ile" tasting session.

The colour is pale straw  and the texture shows medium tears with medium fast legs.  The nose offers a maritime peaty and wood-driven profile that is quite impressive but not overly complex.  No flaws or off-notes that I can find.  The whisky arrives warming and a little peppery on the palate with no distracting moments but without a coating effect too.  The taste is about the same profile as is the nose with some additional chalky-mineral notes.  The finish is of medium length with a minor drying-astringent feeling (plastics).  Water turns the dram smoother but it flattens quickly so be cautious not to add too much of it.

A solid Kilchoman but not the best of the pack (so far).  The price point is way too high - I would not pay more than 60 Euro for a dram of this quality (maybe five Euro more because of the Feis Ile).

Very beautiful, as he gains more and more intensity in the nose and on the tongue. He does not waste his ammo at the beginning, but comes out the back with a full magazine around the corner.

At first restrained ... - but then comes the smoke, fine and mild, come mild herbs and spices such as chervil, marjoram and a touch of thyme. Peppermint. Vanilla. The smoke is becoming increasingly intense. Behind it freshly ground coffee and young oak.
    • Taste
      88 88
Mild smoky, sweet red apples, lemon, tangerines. Smoke and fruit beautifully connected. Nougat chocolate, marzipan. A lot of vanilla. Also on the tongue, the initially mild smoke increases significantly with time.
    • Finish
      88 88
Medium to long, fruity-sweet and neat smoky. Apple slices, lemon rind, salmiac pastilles, menthol cigarettes.

Nose, taste and finish are so much better when you add a drop of water.

    Sneaky Bastard
For Feis Ile 2018 Kilchoman vatted 4 bourbon barrels, which resulted in a limited release of 744 bottles which sold out in a flash. Thanks to the Whisky Amigos (Belgian friends) I was able to get one. It was the oldest Kilchoman on the market with its 11 years old age. Distilled in March 2007 and bottled in May 2018. Let’s get to it!

The nose starts somewhat restrained on barley sugar and vanilla, a fresh leaf of mint and some green banana. Just a little bit of peat smoke. Soft, but very pleasant.

Ha! What a sneaky bastard! On the palate, it’s an explosion of peat smoke and lots of spices (ginger, white pepper, vanilla) with the fruit in the background. Apples, lemons (peel included) and some almonds. A very clean textbook example of this young distillery.

The finish, medium to long, adds a salty note. At the death, mint returns for just a little while.

Very clean and lovely Kilchoman. Goes back to base of this distillery, I think, and that makes it very attractive.

N: Reasonably weighted clean barley juice with a light peaty=smoky minerality.
T: Potent sustained arrival with a decent body & mouthfeel, delivering a few decent key notes on the palate as well as on the nose.
F: Finally comes the dry smoke without losing mouthfeel & the fairly clean chewy barley body.
C: When you consider this is Kilchoman’s oldest release since they started out in 2005, £111 for a bottle didn’t seem to deter either tourists nor fans.

The Feis Ile is fast approaching and in two weeks today it will be our Open Day - 31st May! The full schedule of events for the day can be found here. The 31st of May also sees the release of our annual Feis Ile bottling.

Anthony Wills and Robin Bignal made their way down to the warehouse a few weeks ago and went in search of some casks suitable for some experienced Feis Ile visitors. There wasn't much produced back in 2007 when the distillery was newly opened but they have located some 2007 bourbon barrels that were filled in March of that year, making this an 11 year old release, something we have rarely done! These have now been tasted and vatted to produce approximately 740 bottles for release on the 31st.

These bottles will only be available from the distillery shop from 10am onwards. The price will be £111 and due to the limited amount there will be one bottle available per person.

Look forward to seeing you on the 31st May!
