    • Nose
      85 85
Earthy peat smoke, vegetal, vanilla, apple, some banana (rare for me to pick this up), faint mint and some dusty wood notes.
    • Taste
      85 85
Quite a dry peak smoke, a honied sweetness, orchard fruits, a little bit of pepper and bitter ashy notes.
    • Finish
      84 84
Long: first sweet and vanilla, then drying with a stale green note, mild liquorice and charcoal .

Not bad, not great, but simply good peated whisky, that won't blow you away, but'll definitively satisfy your peat needs.
    • Nose
Relatively subtle notes of smoke, accompanied by dried seaweed and cow dung. There's some tinned pineapple juice, as well as licorice, banana and a whiff of ozone.
    • Taste
Ash-y, somewhat drying, and quite salty too. There's plenty of smoke, a whiff of rubber, and licorice too, with a hint of milk chocolate and some caramel sweetness.
    • Finish
Lingering rubber and almost medicinal peat. Long.

I really have to say this whisky really blows me over. Must try, definitely. You do not have to say something tasty and tasty.
    • Nose
In the nose, the Port Askaig opens very fine, slightly smoke, mild and with gentle maritime notes. If you give the whisky some time, an intense sweetness comes to the fore. Notes of vanilla, banana pretty yellow everything, then again and again citrus. The more time passes, the more intense he becomes. Herbs and more salty notes are now added. The nose is really a lot of fun and gives you absolute hope for more.
    • Taste
Of course I m the mouth it is now clear that he is not to be underestimated. Nice, full of smoke comes to light, not as strong as its southern representatives but already more than suspected.
The whisky remains nicely structured and clear, feels pretty oily and straight.
Then comes a very pleasant spiciness, sweetness and then tar, with which I had not expected.
Tar, peat and earthy taste suddenly dominate the palate with a sip of the Sound of Jura.
Followed by fruitiness and delicious sweetness. The drinking strength of 45.8 is really ideal, the 14er knows no annoying alcohol notes or is even rudimentary.
I am very stunned. Now, after a while, some dryness settles on the palate.
    • Finish
The finish is really lingering, the smoke and tar remaining intact before being replaced by the typical Islaysweet. It's fun to taste it for quite a while.

Port Askaig 14 Bourbon Cask (45.8%). Consumed at a guided tasting at Milroy's Soho in Feb 2019. The host advised this is a Bunnahabhain. Quite pale. Aroma is airy and closed, dried leaves and pale wood, vanilla icecream. Taste is really smooth and drinkable, fumey, salt and biscuits, easy-going with subtle lemonbalm and oak. Such a contrast to the Caol Ilas that tend to be sold under this brand! (3.35/80)

The finish is rather off, and tarnishes the overall impression. Before it was nice, if special and unusual. Full review (in german): https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2020/06/11/unbekanntes-islay/

  10. Kaleva did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

Quite pleasant smoky single malt, which obviously comes from Caol Ila distillery. With good overall balance but rather simple and straightforward. Despite quite high smokiness it’s very light and easy going.
    • Nose
Smoky, buttery, fresh, vanilla, green pear, grassy notes, lemon peel, honey notes with water
    • Taste
Sweet, smoked ham, ginger and white pepper, vanilla pie, lemon zest, salty notes
    • Finish
Long, smoky, a bit oaky and sweet, maritime feeling
