Whisky Reviews for Springbank 1998 ALOS

9 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 86.92 points

  1. Calmar scored this whisky 92 points Connoisseur

Magnificent malt, stunning aroma, complex, deep, impressive in its density and density taste, soft and delicate finish, excellent balance, perfect sherry aging, framing the smoothed mineral base of time.
    • Nose
Open, wet, luxurious first nose - fruit jam, leather and peat; old wood, slightly burnt jam, velvet prunes, furniture polish, insecticidal light shades, peat, pu er, perfume tones, leather goods, caramel, baklava, roasted nuts, mineral and metal motifs
    • Taste
Rich, dense, sweet-sour notes of dried fruit and peat, spicy oak, bitter chocolate, burnt caramel, ginger, a little smoked meat, prunes.
    • Finish
Spicy, warming, soft oak, burnt rusks, pu er, baklava, orange peel, berry jam - red currant, a little mountain ash.

  3. Mannix65 scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

    pretty complex and "dirty"
    • Nose
      89 89
Slight dirtiness from a dusty earthy sherry barrel, musty basement with clay soil, leather, grape pomace, sweetness of a red wine gum
    • Taste
      89 89
Clear dark sherry with light smoke, woody grape stems, ripe raspberries, sweet cranberry compote, metallic salt water - the addition of water makes it extremely dry
    • Finish
      88 88
      long, dry, sweet, distinct wood

Deep nose. Sherry, rancio, peat, rubber, juicy, bright fruits. There is a glimpse of excellence. Complex, but not all of it in a good way, though it is quite a journey. Nutty long finish but the rubbery/sulphur/matchstick is too much for me. A disappointment in the series for me along with the Glen Keith.

The bottle I tried was freshly opened. The nose had too much sulfur for my liking. Maybe it changes with some air and time.

Not my type of Springbank prefers. All the aromas seem a little muffled, it's a shame.
    • Nose
Peat, rubber, strawberry, light mushrooms, ash, mineral.
At the opening a little more fruit, yellow and citrus (lemon yellow).
      A little leather appears too.
    • Taste
In the mouth we are on red fruit, lemon wrapped in wood and dried fruit. It has potato for 48%. A little match burned.
    • Finish
The finish is long on prune, wood and spices (pepper, chilli)
