[July, 2022] Last night we did another of these 3M-tastings (Mega-Monster-Marathon) in memoriam of good old Roland (R.I.P.) who introduced me into the wonderful world of single malt whisky: Six people, six hours and sixty drams (small measures only, because otherwise we would have ended up at the hospital).

In such a setting it is neither possible nor does it make any sense to write detailed notes hence take my scores with a grain of salt. This was the menu after a "warm-up" with four private cask samples (not rated):

    01) Aberlour Glenlivet 1965, 8 years old, dumpy square bottle, pale colour, 50% WB5993 ~ 90 points

No more drams this evening! And please remember: Whisky was rather made for drinking than for herding...

Old style Macallan - not too sweet - much less sweet than the Macallans from the 50s but more fruity and spicy - fantastic!

h2h with the Macallan 1965/1984 bottled by Rinaldi this one has more old books but less vanilla - otherwise both are very close.
    • Nose
      94 94
Cooked fruits, cooked oranges, little acacia honey, spices, cinnamon, cloves, melon, pipe tobacco, old books, hints of pepper, toffee, sherry wood - superb!
    • Taste
      94 94
Little punchy, spicy, fruity, subtle sweetness, more cooked oranges, cloves, cinnamon, tobacco, toffee, pepper, old books, sherry wood, orange zest, little camphor, hints of herbs - excellent!
    • Finish
      93 93

aromatic, spicy, concentrated, sweet, dark spicy honey, dried fruit, overripe fruit (touch tropical), cantaloupe melon, heavy and syrupy, slightly dark. Thyme, fine, dry and warm notes of old oak. Slightly tickles the nose, a hint of menthol. Looks noble, intense and very appealing.
    • Taste
      93 93
warm, aromatic, spicy, spices, sherry. A bit heavy at first and a touch dark, syrupy, then more open with sherry, thyme, sweet-tart-spicy, fine warm dry oak, a touch of barrel and a hint of coffee, dark chocolate. Very consistent, very good.
    • Finish
      92 92
first with fine, tart oak notes, then a little sherry, spices and fine oak. Very balanced, nothing corners or disturbs. Sweet-tart-spicy. Finally with a hint of dark honey and again with fine oak notes. Lingering very long.

Class, venerable, old Mac, he probably lacks a touch of whimsy. to carry him even higher than he already is.
    • Nose
Noble, but still fairly young cognac in the nose, fresh flowers, fresh, thin leather, grapes, gooseberries, apricots, quite intense for 43%, white chocolate, macadamia nuts, fresh papaya, cardamom, hints of eucalyptus
    • Taste
Fresh cherry, plum, mint, grapes, kiwi, papaya, fine leather, milk chocolate, hazelnut, wine gums, sweet licorice, quince, bitter orange, almonds, pecans, toffee, herbal honey
    • Finish
Dark chocolate, praline, fennel, thyme, quince, long

I have always had a sneaking suspicion that the best casks 17/18 years were kept for the Special Selection bottles, certainly the 18 year ones (Special Selection) are better than the 18 year vintages.

Its a pity I could not do a H2H with the 1963 Special selection I had but that went far too quickly.

This at the price is far too moreish, as I said it lacks a little power, a little grunt, the peat in this is lovely.Nothing like the rubbish Macallan put out today.

If this was at 46-50% it would be over 95 points.Just below that  which in my book means not outstanding but on the horizon.
    • Nose
This has a really nice nose, elegant, floral and sweet.Fruit gums, kiwi fruit, gooseberry, dark jams and rhubarb crumble.
    • Taste
Like many older Macallan it feels underpowered at 43% but that's because of how smooth it is, there is absolutely no burn and hardly any hint of alcohol but its not watery or anything, that is well classy I suppose?Nice sherry infusion here, all sort of dark fruits and now I get quite a big wave of peat that I did not detect on the first mouthful, some dark toffee and a hint of syrup in the mix
    • Finish
Medium length, remaining sweet with a peaty side that's growing.
