My brother was lucky enough to find this in a store in Calgary even though these are exclusive "Travel Retail". This happens sometimes in Alberta when some Travel Retail bottlings find their way into some regular retail stores.

So I asked to try it before they all disappear to see if I want some for myself. At around $140cnd, I'll pass. It's good, but I can purchase Octomores for the same price, so I don't feel the value's there in comparison and there's nothing special about it other than the fact we are not suppose to have the opportunity to purchase such a bottle.

This might improve with oxidization, but it's not my bottle so I maybe missing something special on the development as the bottle empties.

This is the ugliest bottle I've ever seen. It looks like it came from a hospital or lab. Ugh!
    • Nose
      86 86
Sweet tobacco, slightly burt caramel, some other stuff I can't put my finger on.
    • Taste
      88 88
Sweet and very thick mouth feel; heavy tobacco, light caramel with very slight fruitiness.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium, slight bitterness on the backend. It's not that complex and the finish does not add much if anything to the experience. It's okay.

For me, not the high flyer that many see in him, but also no disappointment. Simply a solid bassy PC from an interesting barrel.
    • Nose
Stings something in the nose at the beginning, but that flies, if you give it some time, greasy smoke, not too strong smoke in the nose, some dark chocolate, but the smoked bacon is dominant, take your time is worth and a little warming does not hurt either , then it opens properly, then much more chocolaty, nut flavors, a bit of sulfur, some mint, the ashy smoke comes through with time more
    • Taste
oily, full-bodied, spicy smoke, sweet milk chocolate with a hint of cinnamon, very creamy, caramel, this typical Laddienote, then dry, red fears, then swinging again and again sweetness
    • Finish
very ashy smoke, nuts, a memory of chocolate

I had trouble deciding how much I liked it at first. The leathery, rubbery, peppery, and savoury notes are pretty challenging, and I’m not such a big marsala fan. That said, I think the water helped it out a fair bit, and I feel the whisky will only improve with time oxidizing in the bottle (update: a year after writing these notes, I can say that this prediction has definitely come true). There are some serious meaty notes in here, along with gorgeous tropical fruits, coastal Islay influence, and French oak.

Nose: Savoury and syrupy-sweet. Pretty obvious marsala influence, but pretty well-integrated into the malt. Old leather, soy sauce, and nori. Funky fruits: dried mango, papaya, and passionfruit. There’s also more of a familiar vanilla/maple/caramel sweetness, along with some dark chocolate. There’s definitely peat smoke, but it’s mellowed by the marsala and French oak. Lots of fresh rubber. There’s some herbal elements underneath, with some juniper and anise appearing to complement the rubber and leather.
A little water brought out the heavy French oak sweetness.

Palate: Sweet fruit, then herbal and woody. Lots of rubber and leather. Dark, slightly bitter herbs and seaweed. Vanilla and wood. Spicy black pepper, nutmeg, cardamom, and vanilla on the back end.
After adding a few mLs of water, the palate is much sweeter and tamer. The bitterness has mostly subsided. Now the whisky arrives with apple, citrus, and sea salt, before rich Marsala, vanilla, and peat smoke take hold. Honey-glazed smoked meat in the middle, or is it pepper steak? There’s still leather and rubber, but they sit in a bit of a sweeter space.

Finish: Fruity, malty, and spicy. Passionfruit, banana, and pear. Strawberry Pop Tarts! Or some other sweet cookie thing. More old rubber, black pepper and soy sauce. Some kind of sweet barbeque sauce. Sautéed mushrooms and punky wood. Tandoori smoke and cured meats.

At the start, the Marsala comes out a bit excessive, winey reflections, fermented fruits, candied cherries. Then the peat rises, a little granite, and it is very balanced, sweet, with plum pulp, a lemon zest, a smell of undergrowth, sandalwood, damp grass, smoke. tangy, green apple. At the end the smoke is very present. A fruity dash all the same. On the palate, it's excellent, wood and marsala blend together, wine lees, blackberry liqueur, the spices are there, then the red fruits, the finish, all of controlled power, on strawberry and raspberry , very long, almost redcurrant at the end, then the wood and the earth. A black earth, full of water. Cassis. Menthol cigarettes.

One would think that he could be a little further at nine years of age ... He seems undecided, torn between youthful impetus and moderation that is slowly emerging.
    • Nose
      87 87
Sweetness of blackberries, black currants and grapes. Cool smoke that penetrates the nose intensely, but is not intrusive. Almond milk, nougat chocolate, cold coffee grounds.
    • Taste
      86 86
Despite its noticeable strength, it delivers a creamy start. Licorice lozenges, pepper, nutmeg. Cold peat smoke. First and foremost, it is spicy and smoky, the fruit notes in the form of berries and smoked apricots come later. Menthol comes after your while.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium length, strong smoky. Sugar beet syrup, menthol, fermented grapes. Warm sheet metal makes it look youthful.

I'm not sure how to put it succinctly, but this bad boy of a whisky is Pele - Maradona - Messi - Ronaldo all rolled into one. Pele's flair, Maradona's bestiality, Messi's artistry, and Cristiano's power-play are all present in its every sip.

It's retail price of $150 US (tax and shipping included), and availability are the only reasons it misses out on a perfect score. Otherwise this whisky from Bruichladdich is hard to find faults with.
    • Nose
      Deeply fruity, subtle smokiness, briny
    • Taste
Desserty sweet, mouth coating oiliness, chewy, hint of aromatic spice

    Color: Dusk, apple juice concentrate.
Smell: Bowmore 18D&C? Peat Shirley? The first smell is almost the same just more pop, but after a few minutes the peat and sauce flavors start to fade, and the sweetness becomes stronger and more creamy, like a rich strawberry jam with a hint of Ovaltine.
Tasting: A little bit of peat and ash. Take a sip, peat, dates and mulberries, mixed with the tannins of wine, there is almost no saltiness and sourness that I don't like, and there is a little bit of smoky bacon and a little bit of mint coolness, and finally if there is any Ruowu's lychee drink lingers in the mouth for a long time. It's very smooth, and it doesn't pierce the mouth. It is almost suspected that the alcohol level is marked 10 degrees more.
Wine is a good wine, but it has two disadvantages: 1. After less than one-fifth of the wine remains, the body of the wine will deteriorate very quickly, and one taste a day. 2. The cork actually dropped sawdust! There are wood chips in the cup every time it is poured.

A little varnish. Notes that make you think of sherry. A slightly confusing bubblegum side (less with water) Ashes and peat in the background. A little confusing .. Slightly farmer.
    • Taste
      89 89
More interesting in the mouth, oily, a little sweet, on herbs, peat, ash, caramel, dried fruits. More peppery aftertaste. Good balance, fairly easy and tasty.

      85 85
A little harder finish, on earth, herbs. Maybe a bit too bitter. Made younger ..

Had this as a part of Port Charlotte tasting. Compared to PAC: 01 2011 and OLC: 01 2010 this one was surprisingly the weakest for me, even though I love Marsala finishes.

  21. Ostfriese scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

The malt certainly has potential, but a little more time would probably have done it very well. Its stormy, youthful side and the oppressive alcohol are a bit of a nuisance for the great aromas that can already be felt here and there.
    • Nose
Sweet berries and raspberry syrup are followed by currants and red grapes. Light smoke, blown by the wind, slowly rises from the glass and carries a hint of smoked bacon with it. Bensdorp cocoa, hazelnuts and mineral-earthy notes form the conclusion.
    • Taste
Hmmm ... my first thought about it: A lot of horsepower that you somehow don't get properly on the road. A lot of spices flood the mouth, especially white pepper and nutmeg followed by cinnamon. The smoke is present and dominant, nothing can get past it at first. Slowly apricots, oranges and quinces make their way. In the background you can see sweet caramel and milk chocolate.
    • Finish
Ashy, cold smoke mixes with sweet forest honey and red grapes.
