[October, 2018] I had a dram during the Cadenhead warehouse tasting at Campbeltown. This is out of a 25.000 litres batch acquired in bulk containers (so nothing is known about the casks it was matured in) and filled in Campeltown into an exhausted butt (that contributes nothing in terms of maturation) just for a nicer warehouse tasting experience - what is absolutely okay if you state it that way as they did during the tasting...

The profile is that of a typical young Lagavulin and it is very bold and clean - just as usual with Lagavulin that offers a surprisingly consistent quality even throughout the whisky boom times (hopefully it stays that way!). A clear recommendation to all "An Islay Distillery" lovers - and it is sold for 65 GBP at Campbeltown...

The colour is pale straw and the nose offers the typical young Lagavulin profile with delicious bacon and barley aromas (which reminds me always of the hearty Scottish breakfast). I really like this...
    • Taste
      88 88
The taste is nicely layered (despite its young age) on barley sugars first followed by peaty aromas and some bitter tobacco / hopsy notes. Finally herbal and spicy flavours join in to create a quite complex and balanced tasting experience for such a young malt. Nonetheless, this one is not better than other Lagavulin releases of a comparable age...
    • Finish
      88 88
The dram arrives warming and instantly coating on the palate with a minor drying moment (cold metals, e.g. copper). The finish is long and spicier than the taste. At the end the cold metals feeling pops up again but this is not distracting. Water turns the dram smoother and more approachable - I like it best when reduced to about 50% abv.

    Undisclosed Lagavulin.

Young wild Islay Whisky (Ian calls him Baby Lagavulin) that needs to be tamed with enough water! Without water -2 points.

Here the young age makes itself felt, but still a great drop!

A great Lagavulin release. Bacon, salt, grassy, raspberries. Tropical at times with banana, melon. Balancing between some dirty Islay notes and fruity / tropical sweetness. Works very well indeed. A bargain imho. Finish. Well. Lasts forever. I would 've guessed 54-55%. Well balanced

  7. Jack McClane scored this whisky 94 points Connoisseur

So far, my favorite whisky under the age of 10 has been Jack Wieber's Laphy.
Now he is displaced from the first place. What a great paints!
    • Nose
Restrained smoke, vanilla a little freshly mown hay, very interesting. The nose does not reveal what a sensational malt you have here.
    • Taste
Unbelievably great start. Hard to believe that this malt has almost 60%.
Smoke, vanilla, bacon, classic Lagavulin notes. Everything is just right here.
Madness what this boy delivers whisky here.
    • Finish
The finish lasts forever. Smoke, vanilla, sweetness and this awesome Lagavulin distillery character are fantastic!
