Whisky Reviews for Old Grand-Dad 114

  1. MaltMartin scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

These 114 OGD are legendary bottles from the defunct Old-Grand Dad Distillery (DSP-KY-14) owned by National Distilleries when this bourbon was bottled. Really nice old-skool bourbon from an era nobody really cared about 'brown sprit' and bourbon was at its lowest level of popularity. In hindsight, a bloody shame when you taste these beauties now.
    • Nose
More on dark fruit and oak than its fabulous BIB sister. I got caramelized oranges, stewed dates and blackcurrants. Prunes and plums as well. Acacia honey. Later on sweet touches of marzipan and Turkish Delight. Cumin seed and some underlying hickory. Roasted chestnuts later on. It's all very delicate and complex.
    • Taste
Touch of freshly varnished wood intermingled with molasses, brown sugar and maple syrup. Butterscotch and vanilla underpinnings showing lovely interplay between vanilla and bitter chocolate. Spices of cinnamon and caraway. Gingerbread. Lemon balm and zestiness at the background.
    • Finish
Medium long. Black pepper and a little nutmeg. Pine and old leather at the end. Great balance between the nutty toffee and spicy rye. Multi-layered bourbon. I love it.

  2. Dram Dracula scored this whisky 93 points Connoisseur

First time trying a National Distillers OGD 114 and definitely not regrettable. Satisfying from start to finish. I had it at 92 points initially. 93 points now. I do wonder if this somehow got better in the bottle over the past 35-36 years or did folks really have it so much better back in the days?
    • Nose
Color is quite dark. The nose is fresh, full of wonderful caramel, old spices, cinnamon, a bit of toffee, dark preserved fruits. Then it gets a bit earthier, like wet forest and damp wood.
    • Taste
I LOVE IT! So yummy! 57% and so smooth and wonderfully oaky at the same time. I know I am not supposed to say "smooth" in a whiskey description but can I say this is chuggable in a very satisfying complex way.
    • Finish
At 57%, can it be anything less than wonderful? No. Perfect strength for a bourbon. There are many single barrel higher strength bourbons with lengthier, spicier, more intense finish, but that doesn't make them better.
