  1. Kaleva scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

Nice whisky, mild on the nose but with minerally and punchy palate. Finish is rather short but pleasant. This expression from Jura shows good balance with obvious coastal character. A bit too oaky on my taste.
    • Nose
Buttery, light sour notes (berries), sweet apple mash, hint of cinnamon, vanilla fudge, caramelized orange peel
    • Taste
Spicy (ginger, pepper), minerally, hint of salt, coastal notes, oak
    • Finish
Spicy, somewhat industrial (motor oil), slightly sweet, woody and leathery

Somewhat closed, with a good will I find slightly dry-sweet and sour notes, grapes.

Significantly more open at the second tasting. Beautiful wine aromas, dirty Jura notes and acidity.

Here, too, rather little there. Inconspicuous and interchangeable. The Jura character is weakened there, but comes out better for me, for example, in the 10er and some other bottlings. The (still comparatively) good score is based on the fact that I mostly like the Jura character overall.

No improvement here compared to the first tasting - a bit sharp overall.
    • Finish
      80 80
      Rather short, chocolate "dart cream".

Such a cigar malt. Suitable to drink in an armchair facing the fire piece in winter. No roller-coasters, just a steady stream of flavours flowing through the palate. Lack the strength tho.

[78-82] I'll gladly welcome another dram.

    N 25
Dark fruits (plum, blueberry, blackcurrant) and wood. Blackberry jam. Soggy hay. A whiff of honey at the back.

    P 24
Toasted oak. Ashy. Now the fruits returned (plum skin). Malty. Mild baking spices. Plenty of oak & tannin bitterness at the back.

    F 25
Short-mid finish. Dark chocolate with dried fruit chunks.

Very liquid, copper color. Light oily.

Varnishes, wood, maybe some grain. However, in a quite elegant and structured version for Jura. Heather honey. Buckwheat honey. Some flowers. Vanilla. Red and dark berries start to come out. Blueberries and blueberries. Maple syrup, but not that sweet. Maybe some red currants.
    • Taste
      81 81
Blueberries, blueberries. Some wax. Exotic wood. Heather honey. Varnishes. A pinch of spices. Light spice. Spices. Nutmeg. Cocoa. Salt. Light oily. Traces of ashes and smoke.
    • Finish
      78 78
Honey. Caramel. The bitterness of the oak. Traces of varnishes. Cocoa. A pinch of spices. Spices. Nutmeg. Black pepper. Salt. Medium-long finish.

Oddly enough, the 12-year-old release turned out to be more interesting than the 18-year-old

  11. Robinzon25 scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Classy whisky, warm, enveloping, with excellent balance and depth. One of the best representatives of modern 18-year-old whisky.
    • Nose
Dried fruits, cherry compote, pumpkin seeds and marzipan, a hint of smoke.
    • Taste
Tones of cake, hot spices, chocolate with salt, berry jam and a light note of smoking predominate.
    • Finish
Measured, long enough, with hints of crumbly biscuits, chocolates with salt, coffee and fruit marmalade. At the end of smoke, spicy spices and delicate influence of oak.

    Dark amber color.
Nose is even, in which berry wine notes stand out, there is a slight stench of a trash can (these notes were especially inherent in old releases), behind this, wood, vanilla, fruit, jam appear, and all this goes to ripe fruits, which are already starting to rot slightly, baking spices and cocoa beans are also noticeable.
Taste is smooth, with a noticeable sourness, with hints of spices, berries, wood, vanilla and apples.
Finish is long, opens with spices and hints of wood, moderately dry, with hints of berries and fruits.
The whisky is very well balanced, interesting, powerful enough and characteristic. Just what you need when you want to sit and rummage in whisky. This whisky is definitely not for drinking in bottles, not outgoing, but just for the egoist. You can savor it, reveal the shades and midtones that reveal over time.

It's certainly not one dimensional or boring and offers enough of a challenge.
    • Nose
A touch of chalk and menthol, with a hint of violets, but it's the sour or copper coin note that stands out to me. I sometimes find similar notes in Ben Nevis and Tobermory. Now mind you, there's also room for fresh berries, hazelnuts and warm spices.
    • Taste
Dry, spicy and sweet with a gentle smokiness. Somewhat tannic as well. The wine influence is more noticeable, with plenty of sweet berries. There's a touch of chocolate too, as well as some cigar tobacco. Slightly metallic.
    • Finish
Sultanas, bitter breakfast tea. Short to medium.

    fair puddle

The finish is mau compared to nose and palate
In general, the combination of law and wine barrel does not fit here
    • Nose
fruity, red wine, dark, tart, a slightly weird touch of wine ?, slightly buttery
    • Taste
round and full on the palate
first sweet then the tartness of red wine, red grapes, brown bread, spicy, light lemon
    • Finish
      short to medium long
first thin, then harsh, red grapes, spicy and increases

  23. Alex Fridays scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

The colour is dark amber. The nose is sweet and smooth with dried fruits, caramel, spices, plum, sweet fruits, berries jam, perfume and light smoke notes. The palate is also smooth and sweet with dried fruits, vegetables, chocolate and spices notes. The finish is long and dry with spices, vanilla, chocolate and grass notes. Jura 18YO is a well balanced, smooth and tasty whisky.

This is shocking on many counts. WTF has Jura done here. This was a sample off a neighbour. I am pleased I didn't buy it. This has to be a contender for worst sample and biggest Disapointment already.

There is not much of a nose on this at all. Nothing wrong with my nose as I've just been nosing another before this. In fact i swapped glasses to see if that helped and I must say no not really. I also went out into the fresh air and that didn't help either. Really struggling to find red fruit notes as you would expect. There is something there but Phfffff! I'm not Sherlock Holmes.
    • Taste
      48 48
I was hoping for something totally different with the taste because it has happened in the past with others. Nothing going on with the nose but the taste saves it. This unfortunately doesn't have that. The taste is quite bland and uninspiring. A bit hot and spicey but that's it. I certainly expected a lot more.

The finish is just as bad. I was going to say it dive bombs, but from where?

A 2nd go at this, after a brief taste at the Whisky Live last year, which have caught my taste bud with the expressive characters.

N- Sweet smokes of cigar, zing of savoury spices and mineral with berries liquorice at tail. Thick sphere of leather with walnut underlay. (87/21)

P- Spicy, bold, inky, charred oak, burnt caramel, spent matches with more tobacco coming thru. Sure a colourful one on palate, amicably chatty with plenty to unveil overtimes. (91/22)

F- Medium-long, smooth and velvet, sunk in perfectly with fine weighty and calmed relaxing leather hues and berries. (90/22)

    Body/Balance- 88/22
