The highlight was the nose for me. It brought me back on Islay. I preferred the palate with a few drops of water.
    Finally enjoying a recent Ardbeg.
    • Nose
      91 91
Gentle. Peat smoke, tar, coastal and medicinal (iodine, camphor) notes, aromatic herbs, zesty lemons, almonds and vanilla. Excellent.
    • Taste
      90 90
The attack is sharp, ashy, smoky, citrusy and briny. Second sipping is more juicy, zesty and herbal.
With water, more smoky and ashy (bonfire), more salt and pepper.
    • Finish
      90 90
Long, smoke, lemon and lime juice, ashes and a tiny bit of oak.

Great cask selection by Elixir. For me, this is the „modern sibling“ of the 15yo 57% Bulloch Lade CI. Very straight-forward Ardbeg, mainly on lemon & vanilla cream, well integrated smoke and some herbal notes (camphor) on the finish.

  5. Saftkenner scored this whisky 92 points Expert Senior

I'm actually not a particularly big Ardbeg lover, but I really have to take my hat off to this bottling. No wishes remain unfulfilled for me here. Smoke and bourbon cask at its best.
Lush vanilla, elegant smoke, accompanied by complex spiciness, both powerful and smooth on the palate. Harmony in every nook and cranny. Great part!
    • Nose
      92 92
Elegant and rich on the nose. The smoke has a very smooth and slightly mineral touch. It brings a maritime freshness and is interwoven with wonderfully spicy notes of vanilla. There are also fine citrus notes, caramel, passion fruit, tangerine cream cake, coconut, a hint of menthol, dried oranges and very clearly he even brings this grandiose spicy vanilla with a touch of tobacco, which you can also find in many full-bodied bourbon bottlings found when you leave the empty glass overnight and then smell it again the next morning. Great!
    • Taste
      92 92
Very voluminous and creamy on entry. The alcohol is well integrated. On the one hand, it pushes really hard at first, blasting the load of aromas right into the mouth, but on the other hand, it also reveals another side, the suppleness, elegance and harmony of which, once the flow of saliva is properly stimulated, is difficult to top.
Antique wood, cigar smoke, caramel, tobacco, leather, candied lemons, luscious vanilla, salt flowers, cloves, heather honey, hints of ash, pineapple flambé, black pepper, dark chocolate, spicy oak.
    • Finish
      91 91
Medium to long finish. Rich oak, cold smoke caught in antique furniture, a touch of espresso, flamed pineapple, caramel, sea salt, burnt caramel, ash, candied lemon.

  6. DannyDram scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

Fine peat smoke, campfire, medicinal, association, iodine, menthol, citrusy in the background, somewhat fleshy, oak, vanilla, mineral. Good start, strong body, good texture, slightly astringent, some acidity sticks. A blender, starts very well, but then can't quite keep up on the palate and finish.

I was thrilled until the finish. From then on it is all about bitter notes. But overall it is really good. Full review (german): https://keinehalbendrinks.de/2020/12/14/maximum-ardbeg/

Good one but not great. Does not smell or „feel“ like a typical Ardbeg but a still a nice one. Had both supernovas in the same Tasting earlier this evening and they both slightly outperformed this one.

  24. Dram Dracula scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

    91 points across the board...
    • Nose
Nose is not very expressive at first, but it is precise and cohesive, and not all over the place. A good denseness, with peat, some coconuts, buttercream frosting, and candied fruits at the core.
    • Taste
Okay, this is Ardbeg showing off and flexing its power. There's a little dance of simple but brilliant taste components in your mouth --peat, citrus, sea salt... Ardbeg that is just pure, and one can say even straightforward, and it really does tingle your senses. "Nervous" is probably an apt term for this whisky -- I will have to go back to Serge's review to see if he said this!
    • Finish
Extremely long. Feels more powerful than just 52.4%.

Very powerful, very pure, very clear.

Addendum: the longer I have this opened, the less complex it gets it seems. 90 points after a couple months.

  26. MaltyMillionaire scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Very nice dram. Palate and finish taper off slightly for me.
    • Nose
Sweet peat, cooked apples, light honey, light citrus, almonds.
    • Taste
Sweet arrival. Peat, honey, citrus, mild spice, vanilla. Starts great, but falls off just a bit.
    • Finish
Long, billowing smoky, sweet, and spicy.

  27. lachaineduwhisky did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

    • Nose
Fine peat, chiselled. Cooked apples, which disappear quickly. Petroleum derivatives, brine. Very fragrant, with aromatic herbs, complex notes, sometimes metallic, sometimes acidulous.
    • Taste
Very lively, fresh, maritime. Some fruit. More citric than really lemony? (It does not mean anything ^^)
    • Finish
Smoke, with an explosion of spices. Creamy touch. Hyper long on the lemon, beautiful!

      Enthusiasm
      Nose & Mouth 4/5
      Final 5/5

    Notes by producer:

Sweet and smoky, rich yet delicate, the classic contradictions of the distillery that make it so revered are ever-present in the latest Ar bottling.

    Cask details:
A vatting of two bourbon barrels, distilled in 2001.

    Tasting Notes;

    Nose
Sweet vanilla and white chocolate mix perfectly with wisps of woody smoke and iodine.

    Palate
More white-chocolate cookies, sweet caramel and orchard fruit (baked pears and apples) sit alongside an intense nuttiness with classic bonfire smoke and charcoal reminding us of this whisky’s origin.

    Finish
    Pecan pie and smoked almonds.

Very balanced and round, very drinkable and enjoyable - Fantastic!
    • Nose
Intense, peat'n smoke, bonfire, little bit lemony, little fruitiness, honeydew - very good
    • Taste
Oily, creamy, very mouth coating, nice peat and smoke, bonfire, Ardbeg-style, subtle sweetness, fine woody notes - great
    • Finish
Medium long, warm, more peat and smoke

  32. detachedblue scored this whisky 87 points Connoisseur

Well, sorry to both Ruben and Serge. This Ardbeg is excellent but definitely not anything close to devine or being in the 91/92 points caliber. A very good price/performance ratio if you can get one. Rumour said only 60 bottles for UK. Wow a war is coming.
    • Nose
Very sweet, refreshing and soft peat, a can of pineapple which is phenomenal. I would score 92 for the nose only because of the tropical fruits.
    • Taste
Still very refreshing, fresh leather and mints. Earthy peat but a bit flattish here, a kind of boring.
    • Finish
Medium to long, exotic fruits. Waxes and dark chocolates.
