    The rum influence is very clearly present, whereas the initial version with the same label from 2014 (ID 55725) had a prominent sherry mark. I have a slight preference for the 2014 version, but they're not far apart score-wise. They are in taste though, very different whiskies even though the label is the same.

      Apples drained in rum, about to go into pancake batter. Orange candy and peat.
    • Taste
      Orange, peat, peach, gingerbread, dark chocolate, leather and apple.
    • Finish
      Ashy peat, apple and dark chocolate.

    Longrow 18yo comparison between 2013 (WID: 43388), 2015 (WID: 69018), 2018 (WID: 111830)

    They are clearly different from each other.

    The 2013 is clearly the most idiosyncratic. It has notes that remind me of lemon balm sweets, maybe some lemon detergent and herbal tea with sugar candy. The sherry is more yellow-fruity and sour. Mineral notes. The smoke is reminiscent of a glowing candle wick. The mouthfeel is somewhat similar to wine.

    The 2015 is much more balanced. The citrus fruits are now candied. Here too, the fruits of the sherry are more yellow, but they appear fuller and fuller than in the 2013 season. In addition beautiful caramel notes and herbal sweets. The smoke is rather subtle and sweet. Finally, beautiful oak and spices

    The 2018 is overall much darker in character. The color also suggests. The fruits are no longer yellow here, but rather dark and tart. Then tobacco and leather. The wood notes present themselves more in the form of tree bark. The smoke is also a bit stronger and spicy here. In the end, musty notes, cold smoke and chocolate.

    The 2013 is somehow not so me. Certainly has funny notes in it, but I don't seem to like the way they interact.
    I think the 2015 is really delicious, everything looks nice and homogeneous without being boring. Enough character and still elegant.
    The 2018 has the clearest sherry influence. But it is certainly not overloaded. That leaves enough room for the longrow. It also tastes good to me.

    In a direct comparison, I like the 2015 best. Just before the 2018. I don't really like 2013.

      Some rubber up front, along with a dirty diesel / exhaust fume note. Tar, grease, old leather... Then sweet notes: caramel, cola and "Big Red" cinnamon chewing gum. Indistinct, sweet fruitiness (perhaps red berries). Does not nose as musty as some other 18-year old smokers (Laphroaig comes to mind), and it's also less smoky than, say, the 18-and-up Caol Ilas. The emphasis is less on pure phenolics than on sherry tones and sweetness - akin perhaps to recent Uigedails in that respect. A rather modern nose, but with good depth.
    • Taste
      Chewy, juicy, sweet, with some nice residual citrus zing from the Bourbon casks. Earthy and leathery but also somewhat confectionary, with a sense of artificial sweets (red liquorice, gummy bears). It's good, but not 100 € good, and somehow I find this less impressive than the 2016 version, which had been partly matured in rum casks. That one was more buttery and balanced; here I find that some less-than-stellar sherry casks have been involved.
    • Finish
      Long, obviously, and still very fresh and juicy. The oak really plays a subordinate role, with the peat and first-fill aspects taking center stage.

    With his 18 years, no smoke monster more, looks solid and noble. The departure should have been a bit longer.

      Fine smoke, salt and seaweed. Smoked ham. Honey, vanilla, red berry fruits. The sea flavors and the ham notes stay in the nose for a long time. Mineral. Something moist clay soil. Leather. Dark chocolate, cinnamon.
    • Taste
      89 89
      Oily, almost creamy. Almond cream, dark chocolate, toffee, light smoky note. Seaweed. Blackberries, red grapes. Bread dough, malt beer, honey and vanilla. All flavors very closely interwoven.
    • Finish
      87 87
      Medium length with toffee, vanilla, honey, oak chips and still slightly smoky notes.

    Nose: Unveiled a pot of pickled fresh, sour bamboo shoots, bacon, green apple pie, white rum, lemon juice ... it seems to be close to a glass of daiquiri again, the peat is like the band Bass-A thick background is added to all sounds, which is reassuring.

    Palate: peat, almond paste, dough, seaweed, maltose, vanilla, marble cheese, cigar ash.

    Balance, Body: Moderately heavy wine, with a high degree of fat, excellent balance, and a greatly improved ease of drinking.

    Finish: Medium length. Pepper water, cinder, melon, maltose, oak barrels.

    Longrow 18 2018,

    My story with Longrow started with you. Naive as I am, I trusted the labels announcing that you were the heavily peated version of Springbank.
    Does this mean that Springbank has no peat at all and that Hazelburn contains negative rates?
    You are also smoked as one of these ashtrays present on school buses when I was young, but today. You only carry a vague trace of these cigarette butts at most.
    Once this "disappointment" has passed, you have more than one asset in your bag, or rather in your cheap box. You are probably the most expensive whisky to dare to display ragged clothes. If you weren't so good in the end, I would almost be ashamed to ask you in my collection.
    But yes, with a drop of water and 20 minutes of waiting, you are good as a successful dessert. An egg cream, a clafoutis ... you are a delicacy to reserve for lovers of good things that make fun of appearances.

      Wow, what a start! Fantastically complex after heavy oil, tender peat smoke, old dirty wax jacket, brown sugar, inlaid black walnuts, strong minerality, pebbles, old barn with clay soil, cinnamon rum pot, sweet herb liqueur, vials of coke and delicate sea tones. Really impressive complexity

      Oily and heavy. Dark sugar, tender peat smoke, citrus zest, salt, earth, again coke bottles, cinnamon gum, malt candies, tang crackers, cranberries, dark oak honey and porter beer. All flavors are closely interwoven.

      Long, tender peat smoke, oily aromas but at the same time also very sweet after dark toffee, bitter forest honey, needle litter and over-sweet herbal liqueur.
