virtual tasting with PST/LWC. this is just lovely, what do you expect? no, not the best 96 BN out there, but as usual it pushes so many of my buttons. notes in progress 8/10
    • Nose
typical fresh style of 96 BN from quiet wood, just the way we like it. pretty waxy, creamy, loads of peach yoghurt (slightly artificial), wine gums, barley sugar, custard, gorse and honeysuckle. there's not a lot of layers but I love this.
    • Taste
yes. I wish this could be a daily sipper. very creamy, fresh peaches and cream, dunnage warehouse, little bergamot, slight boiled sweets, slates, and quite coastal in the finish, touch of salt. it falls down slightly on the minorly "artificial" nature of its sweetness (though there is clearly nothing truly artificial here, but I blame sherry). BN often makes me think of young SB expressions and this is no exception.

    Enthusiasm 4/5 Whisky n ° 1767
    • Nose
Peach, lemon and lime! Subtle honey. Finesse! It takes a little breadth and thickness, without excess and acquires notes of toffee for a little greed.
    • Taste
The fruits of the nose are there. We have a duel sweet / salty (brine) - with the toffee in the middle to arbitrate - which tends to be won by salty: as often, this distillate resists greed!
    • Finish
      Persistent, but restrained. Unripe fruits.

A Bengalese [,… probably] cat helps introduce the first Ben Nevis the Thompson brothers bottled.

N: I pick up on apple/calvados/brandy vibes first off. It’s super-floral too and beautifully barley-led with a slightly chalky fungal fruity distillate which has been tickled by the cask for 21 years. Between the Thompson brothers, there’s talk of the practice in the 1990s when the [Nevis] distillery used distillers yeast with [spent] brewers yeast. ‘Smells like it”, says Simon. On opening, salty lactose developments. Then comes the milky toffee and slight almond tones that turn towards marzipan. Bunnahabhain-esque?

T: Bunnahabhain-esque indeed, yet Ben Nevis’s mineral/lactose-y funky gentle grapefruit citric > lactose, salty Port Ellen-esque character soon comes through. Then comes an oily peanut-y almost fizzy development into the kind of unusual complexity one has become accustom too in recent years, hence why the price for casks of Ben Nevis – as the two brothers testify – has risen so dramtically.

F: All sorts of rolling overlapping events, flavours and textures. Being less lactose-y than many Nevis’s, means wide appeal for many whisky fans.

C: The opposite of a cliche dram, this is a cracker.

It reminded me of the Ben Nevis 1996 21 yo from The Nectar. Same freshness on fruits and minerality, similar palate with fruits coated in honey. Great nose, great palate. Excellent selection.
    • Nose
Fresh. Barley, yellow fruits (peaches) and citrus (grapefruits, lemons). Whiffs of custard. Honey. And mineral notes with a few pencil shavings.
    • Taste
Fruity and mineral again. Peaches, tropical fruits, grapefruits and lemon. Sweet and slightly sour. A touch of honey. A pinch of salt. Wet stones. Pepper.
    • Finish
      Long. Lingering fruits and pepper.
