Very nice and balanced composition, the bitternoten one must however like. Personally, I find it quite pleasant here, as there is a clear counterpoint with the honey sweetness. However, one should not drink too much, otherwise the bitterness dominates too much.
    • Nose
      84 84
Immediately after pouring very strong on the nose, fruity (yellow and overripe) with caramel and a hint of yeast. Acts quite dirty at first the whole thing. After some life no more yeast and the fruit notes are pleasantly interwoven with the caramel.
    • Taste
      85 85
Not as sweet as you expected. Very strong and still fruity, becomes noticeably tart towards the back. The consistency is pleasantly oily. In the second sip, the bittern notes are right at the front, paired with honey and distinct spiciness. The fruitiness is no longer noticeable.
    • Finish
      82 82
Go slowly with honey and walnuts. Distinct bitterness.

A solid fruit-driven Auchentoshan that has a good balance between spirit and cask. Natural earthiness mingles and combines with berry and orchard fruitiness to make for a refreshing whisky that has just enough spicing to lift the experience up a notch or two. Better with a few drops of water to my palate, but regardless, very suitable for sipping as we head into the warmer summer months.

    • Nose
Earthiness is immediate and delivers both mushrooms and wet leaves. It is livened by citrus (both lemons and limes), marshmallow, sour juicy berries (balsamic laced cherries) and barley water. Herbalness is also present and, when mixed with the berry elements comes across as a steeped fruity tea. The addition of water heightens the fruit element, lifting away from both sourness and earthy notes – strawberries and raspberries are now quite pronounced.
    • Taste
A spicy arrival delivers ginger, cinnamon and something akin to mustard seeds. Earthiness is present, but reduced from the nose, and is joined by some meat flavours - a joint of honey-roasted ham perhaps? Sweetness derives from red berries, with some light touches of orchard fruits – apples and pears. A few drops of water again heightens the fruit elements, adding a dusting of sugar as well as some delicate stone fruits.
    • Finish
Medium to long with nicely fading fruitiness, and a good sprinkle of ginger and cinnamon still lingering.

SMWS Tasting Notes: On the nose neat plenty of citric aromas like lemon, lime and grapefruit at first before a sweeter fruity aroma of quince strawberry jam with a hint of balsamic, rosemary and mint appeared. On the palate like a spicy green tea blended with ginger, lemon grass, cinnamon and cardamom with a little wasabi powder lingering in the background. With water plenty of fruits appeared - apples, pears, peaches and apricot next to honeysuckle and marigold, whilst to taste Parma ham and Cantaloupe melon with honey and a balsamic dressing accompanied by a classic Mojito cocktail consisting of white rum, sugar, lime, soda water and mint.
