Whisky Reviews for Benromach 1998
9 users have left a review for this whisky and scored it an average of 89.10 points
- fruity, dark berries, hints of moldy wine cellar, some vanilla, some honey, some very fine spices, a bit oaky but just perfect. Is there a trace of peat? very gentle peat? finish is nice and fruty, long lasting. fine compex single malt! (WSZ18)
- First reaction: "jeez, how is this so expensive?"
This feels like a rather generic modern sherry single cask that could be from Glendronach or wherever. It's not bad at all, in fact quite good, but it doesn't justify its price to me in any way.
Tasted with Benromach 10yo 100° proof (85 pts.), Benromach 2006-2018 for Van Wees 59,2% (86), Benromach 2005-2014 Hermitage finish 45% (81), Benromach 30yo bot. 2011 (89) and Benromach 35yo bot. 2015 (89).
Lots of chocolate and some jams (apricot? apple?). The sweetest whisky in the tasting lineup (see above). Sandalwood, vanilla, and dessert cakes by the dozen. Some rum chocolates and lipstick as well. With water, it gets spicier and more drying, as if the tannins are taking over. Tobacco and peaches, wet coffee grounds, dry barley, and a bit of grass.
Spicy, with chocolate and lipstick, salt, leather, and butter. Water kicks up both the peat and the tannins, making it rougher and drier and not so much to my taste anymore.
A little too sharp for me, even with water. The sherry carries it.
- Beautiful fullness of the nose, shade of peat and camphor, evanescent smoke. We slept in the hay, surrounded by fruits, grapes, peaches, apricots, and of course a very sweet, almost honeyed vanilla. Land a little dry, grainy. Slight acidity, not quite ripe apple. Very nice balance. Very velvety on the palate, a touch of redcurrant, then the spices rise, and it goes on the pomegranate. Cloves. It's sweet. Woody reflections, including in the finish, quite long, caramel, cranberries. Cinnamon.
- Plum-cinnamon mixture, heavenly.
In addition, orange chocolate with oak.
What was I drinking right now? This is an incredibly good, almost perfect whisky.
- Can you be disappointed and still give 90 points?
In this case it is the case with me. It is a very good malt that brings everything with it. Power, spice and sweetness. But for me that certain something is missing, the tension that makes it an anniversary whisky and in particular justifies this price.
- 20 years, is it worth it?
glue to the nostrils, then sensation of finer almonds, then smoke "light", very sweet, very ethereal!
return vanilla, and fine sherry on cooked apples and a little caramelized
sweetness meringue, vanilla, creamy,
the smoke, just like a line, which gives more character, more expression, we also have fruit cooked on the apple, the grapes are cooked
quite long, on these same aromas, with cooking spices and this fine smoke.
