[October, 2018] Just 3 GBP for a dram at the distillery shop what is very fair (25 ml, at the "tourist" distilleries Dalwhinnie, Oban and Glen Ord they charge 7 GBP for the same amount and their "exclusive bottlings" are rather sub-standard) - but is this Clynelish Distillery Exclusive a good one too?

...yes, it is! This is an excellent cask selection without any flaw and with a great balance and "quaff-ability". No, there is nothing special about this whisky - it is simply a perfect composition that just aims to please (and not to stress) your taste buds. My compliments to all that were involved into this bottling (and could you tell Dalwhinnie, Oban and Glen Ord how you did this, please!)...

The colour is pale straw and the nose offers a delicate mix of floral, honey, spicy and some fruity aromas. It is neither bold nor impressive but it is interesting to explore and very enjoyable, provided you are not in a hurry. Give it some time to fully develop its profile and you will see (rather sniff) what I mean. This is a subtle nose of perfectly matured spirit without any off-note - not for thrill-seekers but for true connoisseurs…

The taste is nicely layered on sweet flavours first (fruits, honeys, sugars) before the spices kick in to form a great combo. There are peppers, ginger, nutmeg... and even a touch of salt, really adorable! Chew it for a while and more flavours are released: milk chocolate, a hint of peat, tobacco and ... All in a perfect balance and without any flaw.
    • Finish

The dram arrives warming and charming on the palate with a pleasant coating feeling and no distracting moment whatsoever. The finish is medium to long and adds even more fine spices (and more salt - ooh, I love a salty touch in whiskies)! Not the slightest trace of any unpleasant bitter or astringent moment, the wood is just about right. Water is not needed, this dram is perfect as it is!

Lovely nose with lemons, wax, green apples. Then more green notes with green spices, lemongrass, moss. Eventually a bit more chemical with pear sorbet and raspberry lemonade. At the very end heather, snuff and blue berries
    • Taste

Semi-oily. Green apples continue. Slightly chemical with pear sorbet again. More spicy than on the nose. Peppery. Citrus. Red berries. Still some wax there. A bit floral, heather and herbs towards the end
    • Finish

Quite long finish. At first, the finish is sulphury / sour, actually. Some bitter spices. That fades iover the next couple of sips. Turns dry after a while. More citrus and pepper now. Gooseberries.

It is very Clynelish which is to say very good, but also very simple. ThIs straightforwardness is initially great, but boring after a while. Tasting it next to the 14 y/o, the 14 is actually more complex and hence better in my opinion. Still, if you make it to Brora you won’t regret picking this up!

Not bad at all. More complete and complex compared to the base 14-year-old

Very interesting. Moss, peat and iodine in good proportion with fruit, vanilla and bread.

A nice Diageo scam that will have to be avoided.

Very vanilla bourbon nose, a little coconut. Together quite alcoholic and vegetal.
    • Taste
      80 80
Bitter mouth, quite difficult, little greedy. Traces of vanilla and spices. Alcohol moderately integrated. It's very young.
    • Finish
      80 80
Medium finish, on spices and wood.

Very subtle and discreet even though I'd like some more *bang* to it. Good one
    • Nose
Vanilla and pear, walnut, butter, splash of citrus
    • Taste
Vanilla & caramel, pear again with a tinge of coconut. Waxy
    • Finish
Smooth waxy mouthfeel, finish on nutmeg & coconut
