Strong whisky with a very concise and versatile nose.

That's interesting, which latches it in the nose at the beginning: foul wood, mushrooms, grape must, brackish water, dead mouse in the rain barrel. The dead mouse gives itself after a while, as dates, figs and raisins in the foreground push. Old leather, cocoa. Spice mixture of rosemary, thyme, lovage and cloves.

Salty and fruity sweet at the same time ... Dried apricot slices, served with dates and figs. Raisin Cake. Caramel and toffee candy. Honey, removes bitter orange marmalade. Spicy, oaky, without being overly dry.

Medium to long, pleasantly salty on the tongue, with dried fruits, orange marmalade and lots of chocolate (Jaffa biscuits?).

This one really needs some time, then things really get better, especially in the nose. Luckily this one is not too balanced, as in: Taste is quite different and most of all much better than the nose.

Hm, this one starts pretty unattractive, mouldy, wet cardboard. Organic, earthy. Not quite engaging. Later on this mouldy nose gets a bit better, with some fruitiness, plums.
    • Taste
      87 87
Luckily the taste immediately gets better than the nose. No mouldy notes here anymore, it's smooth, but still pretty full and creamy. Spicy, cinnamon. Some honey sweetness comes in, and salty. Later on some caramel.
    • Finish
      86 86
Still some pepper, licorice, honey. Still pretty full, even some tobacco remains. Pretty long.

For Feis Ile 2018 Bunnahabhain released two different bottles: a 10 years old on oloroso and a 15 years old on Spanish oak. I was able to get my hands on a bottle of the former, the 10 Year Old Moine, and poured it during my Feis Ile Masterclass in Ghent. It ended up in the top three. Only 1881 bottles were released, a nod to the foundation year of the distillery.

In all honesty, the nose at first reminds me of broth. Maggymix. Mushrooms, spicy borth, leather and a new pair of sneakers. Origin chocolate. Wet moss. Wet clay. Ferns. Even some cow pat. But it works. Underneath is some dark fruit, but it’s the herbal notes that claim your attention.

I get a lot more sweetness and fruit on the palate. Think raisins, plums and roasted almonds. The spiciness is huge with cloves, cubeb pepper, cinnamon and coriander. Tobacco leaves. A touch of menthol gives it some freshness.

The medium long finish is very spicy and dry.

A rather dirty Bunna, but I quite like that.

Great dram, very salty as beautiful Bunnahabhains might be. Ocean dust, keepers (that I love) and salt flower
